Just installed this carrier on my 2020 Jeep JL Rubicon. Im running black rhino 20" wheels with 37" tires. My tire and wheel combo has to be over 100lbs. The tire carrier is rock solid and holds the tire perfectly. The instructions say to shim the upper hinge, I shimmed the lower hinge to offset the weight. Tailgate sets level and does not rattle.
@@robertramsey3713 I thought the same thing about the shims as I’m looking at all of these videos why shim the top when the tailgate will want to sag with weight. Better to shim the bottom. Looks like this comment was a year ago how are you like still liking the tire carrier
It does come with a little install tool and it works but isn't the same large tool we used. We just used some paint on a brush for the holes we drilled.
Hi Ken, I didn't hear you mention it in the video but I'm curious if you could give an estimated install time for this tire carrier. Do you mind sharing how long it took you and how long you would expect it to take the average Joe?
@@AllProAutoOffroad I appreciate the reply. Do you drill the 2 additional holes through the tailgate by the handle (as advised)? I never like to make new holes if I don't have to
Had the evo rear tire carrier, and it was horrible. When torqued to spec the rear hatch would barely open, rust was prevelant after only 4 weeks (powedercoating was horrible on it) and the higes that mounted to the body flexed regardless of what was done to correct it. Also, the third brake light and camera mount is themost rediculous joke I have seen. Let alone, if you are running 3.5 -44 beadlocks such as the Method 106 like myself it simply wont work at all. Replaced it with the Rustys and it is hands down superior to the evo kit in every way. The third brake light and optional plate mount work like a charm, the camera housing is also fully steel (not open like the evo) The finish was flawless, both ecoated and powdercoated and came delievered with no imperfections. It also has a much better hinge support where ths tire mount brackets bolt to the body as it provides an inner vracket that goes on the oppsite side in the brake light housing area. The tailgate mounts also bolt down from the inner side of the tailgate ensureing it stays good and tight unlike the evo. Bottom line, buy the Rustys if your in the market for a carrier. My 37x13.50 cooper sst and method 106 has absolutely zero movement, and the hatch door is rock solid when opening and closing.
That’s good to hear. I have the EVO and have had the same issues as you. Started rusting in a couple of weeks and it rattles when I hit bumps. I’ve tried adding shims on the bottom but they don’t do much. Also, that area where the hinge goes in is very opened so water definitely goes in there. Looking forward to upgrading to this Rustys tire carrier as I have plans to run the 39” KM3s in the near future.

Thanks!

@@busatodd12 Its great. Still no rattle and doesn't sag at all.
Your shim set up worked for mine too, 105 lbs.
Thats one cute dog
Star of the show!
Man I love those rims Ken .first time I got a good look ! Oh and a helluva spare mount 2nice
Thanks buddy
Great video. Quick question, does the kit come with a rivnut tool or a method to install them? Also. Did you paint or clearcoat the drilled holes?

Looks great !!! I have one question on it. Is it possible to locate the third brake lamp on top of the tire mount instead of the bottom ?
You can do anything you want but the bracket is designed for being on the bottom. I'm sure if you are crafty you can find a solution

The average person should be able to complete in less then 4 hours. A competent off road mechanic could easily shave an hour or more off that.
Has this tire carrier stood the test of time? Any rattles?
50 miles, 37-38onch tire and it's perfect. I've sold and installed hundreds, zero issues with any of them

You don't have to but we do if the customer allows it. Just adds more support for the handle

That's the exact same thing we have encountered. I'm glad the Rusty's carrier has served you well
@@mctigmctiggy1475 use the provided shims as needed and have someone pre load the hatch as you tighten the hinge bolts/hatch bolts.
