  • I'm growing sorghum for biomass mostly, but as it turns out honey bees are able to harvest honeydew from the aphids that are on the sorghum. There is also potential for honey bees to forage nectar and/or pollen from the sorghum flowers.
Shout out to Nathan at ‪@DuckRiverHoney‬ for talking about the old book American Honey Plants by Frank Chapman Pellett which I was able to download for free online. This is the book that talks about honeydew on wasp galls.

A German beekeeper sent us some of his honeydew from the Black Forest. Dark, tastes like molasses to a point. I have got to plant a plot. Thanks!

Lots of honeybees! A tart / dark honey thats definitely interesting! Makes for a nice full bodied mead tho! I like the darker and richer honeys for my mead making, yeast are happier. Really cool to see so many, Ill have to see if next year I can spare a small test plot to see if I can notice anything.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I harvested honey from the two bee tree cut outside I did recently (in the videos), and they had a dark but sweet honey that I'm sure had lots of wasp gall honeydew. Sounds like the different honeydews can be very different in flavor. Hope it works out for you.
