  • Work is progressing on the Grand cinema in The 1950s Town 📽️! We were joined by Bill Mather this week, who was a trainee projectionist at the Grand cinema in Sunderland, to lay a brick as part of the project!
Between 1950 and 1955, Bill worked as a trainee projectionist at the Grand cinema in Ryhope, Sunderland, which ignited his passion for the world of cinema. His love for the silver screen led him to manage numerous cinemas across the region.
Throughout the Remaking Beamish project, Bill has generously shared his expertise, design insights, and captivating stories, ensuring that the cinema at Beamish captures the authentic essence of its glorious past.
Mark your calendars… the cinema will open in early 2024! 🗓️
Thanks to the money raised by National Lottery players, the Remaking Beamish project was awarded a £10.9million grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2016 - a major milestone in Beamish’s history and the largest single investment ever seen at the museum.
