After I red your comment it almost sounded like you think of yourself as the greatest blues player since Robert Johnson himself..... Classical players and Jazz musicians have their own style and way of expressions...... Ways that you and I will properly not reach but I just want to let you know that by degrading other musical styles it puts a blemish on our genre, your good but please remember that there is ALWAYS someone better than you... When I was getting into blues I went through a period where I thought I masterd the instrument and the person who Gave me the advice said that I thought that I was like Robert Johnson... It reminds me of BB king and Mister Albert Collins.. You are also very good at piano. The main thing that I wanted to add in the previous comment was if you go and listen to Wes Montgomery or Joe Pass or Even T-bone walker that what theory can do for the guitar. I absolutely do not agree. They may be two separate skills, playing an instrument and teaching music, but you know what they say... Those who can, do, and those who can't, teach. I think I'd be a great teacher of theory, although I consider myself a failed musician/composer.
@@mydogskips2 Hmmm...SO Mozart, Bach, and even Beethoven were all teachers in their time, but as you should know, they were absolute masters at the keyboard. That "old saying" is a myth.

I have been playing guitar for two years when I was 13-15 and I just lost interest because of my laziness to learn theory. I wanted to make my own music so quick and lacked the proper patience. Now, I'm 23 and my love for music (both rock and classical) never ceased so I grabbed my old guitar and started again from the scratch. Music has been always a huge part of my life. I wanna know how to play and read, even though there would be no ther use for it then with friends by the campfire

You’re only 23?!? Try 62. I’ve been playing since my early teens (stopped professionally altogether in the early 80’s) and have always loved jazz and wanted to learn jazz piano theory. It seems so daunting as I’ve always relied on my ear which has been a curse. I can’t seem to get around it and it disheartens me. I WISH I were 23 again - I’d just start going for it! Now I feel like an old dog who can’t learn new “tricks.”

Sir, you are a legend, I thought reading music was very difficult and was for professionals but thanks to you, I can now play any song of my choice because I had to search for tutorials of my preferred songs but when I was not able to find them I would simply give up on it since I have not taken any "classes" for learning to play the piano. I really like piano, when I was 5 years old I remembered I dreamed of playing piano which I never had, yesterday my aunt sent me a new keyboard for a gift and I want to learn how to read the sheets, its a dream come true, I know its a long journey but, I have to do my best if I really want to, I want to be a pianist, wish me luck! Yeah I sail in the same vessel... My self learning KB experience is 6 months. Thanks to YT gurus. I found patience is the only virtue to play some basic melody. I have achieved 50% of it. Going thru the rigors of Chords or later should not regret that music is not complete🎉🎉

Singers use the 'C' clef as well - Soprano clef, mezzo soprano clef, baritone clef, tenor clef, alto clef etc all are C clefs but have different positions on the staff! When I was having piano lessons my teacher told me this sentence to remember the order of Sharps and Flats Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle (Sharps) Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father (Flats) for example: if a piece has 5 flats - look at the first 5 letters of the sentence and you will know that the flats you have to remember are: B,E,A,D,G if a piece has 5 sharps - look at the first 5 letters of the sentence for sharps and you will know the sharps you have to remember are: F,C,G,D,A and so on... PLEASE anybody reading this - don't fall into the trap that a couple of my friends have fallen into - they say that if a piece has flats it's a minor key and if it has sharps it is a Major key - Major and minor keys contain sharps and flats!!
So might want to start with the clef which then tells were the letter names are. Example, G-clef identifies the 2nd line (count from the bottom) is G, the A is the 2nd space and count line space, ah, you do it later in the video🎉

I'm just starting to learn sheet music after playing piano for 40 years. Lol. The one thing I am starting to get from nearly everyone teaching it is, "If you want to know what the notes are on the staff.... you pretty much have to just remember what the notes are on the staff." "Oh... and once you memorize that, the bass clef is there to confuse the hell out of you as it's completely different. Good luck!"
I can relate to this comment on so many levels. I am still struggling with memorizing the Treble and Bass clef notes. I started learning 3 weeks ago and still trying to memorize. I don’t have a piano at home, but at my college there is one that I can practice, but it’s embarrassing to play.
@@nekopop8159when you have started 3 weeks ago then this is normal not to have memorized everything! After like 9 months of playing I don't have to think about it anymore if that is an a or a d, if the notes aren't really low or high. I start to see more patterns which will help when it comes to sightreading something. But how I got there was just playing lots of (different) music. So anyway, you will have memorized it early enough

i studied classical guitar for short time back in the 70,a friend took me over a recording studio, to do some recording with a big band, what happened at that time is ,i couldn't go through with the guitar part ,i gave up..cause the arranger gave me a piano part with chords symbols on top of the notes.and i left the studio ,then weeks later i decided to study sight reading guitar with a piano instructor. and i started from the beginning like this video ,and practicing sight reading for 4 hours everyday ,violin,flute,sax sheet music also chords..later on i got a job in the studio as a session recording musician.....practice everyday ,give you the reward later

@@BlueSky-yj7ll when i was 14 yr old my father took me to an classical guitar instructor ,i learned to read notes that composers use for classical music, but i didnt learn how to read complex notes,like syncopa notes..which are used in jazz big band ,i got i job in cabaret night club in the late 70 i was 19yr old .my reading was not perfect , the director told me if i want to keep the job ,i need to be sight reader 100%..so i got some sight reading books from Berklee college , i practiced 6 hours a day. 7days.took me 6 months in the beginning and later 6 months to practice with violin ,sax,flute sight reading books and others 6 months for chords ..i did put a lots hours ,days ,years..i sight reader had to be on shape ,so i had to practice every day with different books...anybody can learn to read music ..you need motivation, time,peace of mind,and #1 learn where the notes are in the frets of the guitar without looking at.

You explained so very well the theory of the notes, etc. Thank you! When I studied the violin in Europe, I learned to read the notes only by “do re mi fa sol la si.” Why doesn’t the rest of the world read the notes similarly, and instead, they are reading the notes as “A B C D E F G.” For me it is very difficult now to switch to letters instead of the real names of the notes. it's a language thing. Germanic languages (german, english) use the CDEF notation and latin based languages use Do Re Mi Fa. It's the same in principle and you will get used to it in no time. There also may be some religious explanation for the change since Do Re Mi comes from a religilous text from the Hymn to St. John the Baptist
@@measurebymeasure3605When a note is above the middle line its stem should go down, not up. So what you did wrong was put the stem of the notes above the middle line up. You should have put it down if the note is above the middle line and the stem up if the note is below the middle line.

Thanks for the video! I have been playing violin since 9 years old, but back then, my teacher didn't teach me how to read musical sheet. He re-wrote the musical sheet into some rows of numbers. The numbers showed which finger should I use and which string should I bow. After a year, my teacher moved and I continue self-taught. 12 years later (now), I decide that I need to learn how to read musical sheet, and I found your videos. I love how you teach us. Thanks.
thank you for sharing that, yes I think even when you start reading notes is a must. Just a little at a time, nothing too overwhelming. I get that it's boring but it's the most useful tool in music. You can be a poet without knowing how to write but you won't be able to enjoy other people's work or leave your behind for eternity.

Can you do Chords please i really don't get the numbers under a note in chords when playing piano please, thank you also great video!!! Keep up the good work I'll be turning on the notification bell.
That is a good Idea, I will. Probably more violin oriented but I might as well mention some piano. Now, numbers can mean different things. Usually if they're Arabic numbers, meaning our regular numbers, then it is telling you which finger to use, and if it is a roman numeral it could either mean a chord inversion (which would be redundant) or a relative chord to the tonic. Meaning that if the song is played in C and you see a IV then it's telling you the chord shifted to the 4th of the tonic, an F, also called the sub-dominant. But I am still unsure which numbers you are talking about, can you give me an example?

I’m a bit late to discover your video buddy , I picked up the violin about 8 months ago teaching myself online UA-cam , just about every song I been playing in first position lol , the game is about to change after finding your awesome videos , I actually have had to retrain myself as I was playing viola at first then went to violin and was playing tab music to get away from the notes I was playing , it was messing with my head playing violin , anyway I’m on track my music is going to change thanks to your awesome videos . yes but I only cover the G clef on my videos, the piano uses the F Clef as well, that is read a bit differently. I am glad I could help with something though

Ture, but he's obviously assuming it's a treble clef, it is probably the way most people learn music, I mean by first learning the treble clef, then they move on to the bass clef, etc.
you are absolutely right, but there is ALWAYS a clef sign. If there isn't you don't know. On my short examples, I may have left them out since it's a violin video and the only clef is G.
@Ezugo Obuekwe Everyone needs to start somewhere. And it's only basic if you've been taught before, for those who haven't had the privilege and experience of such education, it's not basic at all. A lot of people well versed in music may not know what a breve is, or even a double sharp, or how to read a baritone clef. Heck, I would bet most don't know what a harmonic anticipation is, or what it means to prepare a dissonance. I don't know why I didn't think of it first, but despite its elementary nature, I'm not sure how many know what "Mixolydian" and "Locrian" are, not to mention the different types of minor scales, what relative and parallel, or similar and oblique mean in musical terms. These could all be said to be basic things in music, but my point is that it's all relative, it depends on how much you've been taught.
mydogskips2 do you actually really remember all these 😂 I make music on a DAW and I know basic theory but I play things Indian and Middle Eastern music but idk how the scale bc technically you can’t apply the scale to every note, certain notes only get the same scale

I have been playing guitar for two years when I was 13-15 and I just lost interest because of my laziness to learn theory. I wanted to make my own music so quick and lacked the proper patience. Now, I'm 23 and my love for music (both rock and classical) never ceased so I grabbed my old guitar and started again from the scratch. Music has been always a huge part of my life. I wanna know how to play and read, even though there would be no ther use for it then with friends by the campfire
It seems overwhelming at first but it gets easier and suddenly everything makes sense, keep at it!

I’ve been playing since my early teens (stopped professionally altogether in the early 80’s) and have always loved jazz and wanted to learn jazz piano theory. It seems so daunting as I’ve always relied on my ear which has been a curse.
I can’t seem to get around it and it disheartens me. I WISH I were 23 again - I’d just start going for it! Now I feel like an old dog who can’t learn new “tricks.”

Singers use the 'C' clef as well - Soprano clef, mezzo soprano clef, baritone clef, tenor clef, alto clef etc all are C clefs but have different positions on the staff!
When I was having piano lessons my teacher told me this sentence to remember the order of Sharps and Flats
Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle (Sharps)
Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father (Flats)
for example:
if a piece has 5 flats - look at the first 5 letters of the sentence and you will know that the flats you have to remember are: B,E,A,D,G
if a piece has 5 sharps - look at the first 5 letters of the sentence for sharps and you will know the sharps you have to remember are: F,C,G,D,A
and so on...
PLEASE anybody reading this - don't fall into the trap that a couple of my friends have fallen into - they say that if a piece has flats it's a minor key and if it has sharps it is a Major key - Major and minor keys contain sharps and flats!!
So might want to start with the clef which then tells were the letter names are. Example, G-clef identifies the 2nd line (count from the bottom) is G, the A is the 2nd space and count line space, ah, you do it later in the video🎉

I'm just starting to learn sheet music after playing piano for 40 years. Lol. The one thing I am starting to get from nearly everyone teaching it is, "If you want to know what the notes are on the staff.... you pretty much have to just remember what the notes are on the staff." "Oh... and once you memorize that, the bass clef is there to confuse the hell out of you as it's completely different. Good luck!"
I can relate to this comment on so many levels. I am still struggling with memorizing the Treble and Bass clef notes.
I started learning 3 weeks ago and still trying to memorize. I don’t have a piano at home, but at my college there is one that I can practice, but it’s embarrassing to play.

After like 9 months of playing I don't have to think about it anymore if that is an a or a d, if the notes aren't really low or high. I start to see more patterns which will help when it comes to sightreading something. But how I got there was just playing lots of (different) music. i studied classical guitar for short time back in the 70,a friend took me over a recording studio, to do some recording with a big band, what happened at that time is ,i couldn't go through with the guitar part ,i gave up..cause the arranger gave me a piano part with chords symbols on top of the notes.and i left the studio ,then weeks later i decided to study sight reading guitar with a piano instructor. and i started from the beginning like this video ,and practicing sight reading for 4 hours everyday ,violin,flute,sax sheet music also chords..later on i got a job in the studio as a session recording musician.....practice everyday ,give you the reward later

@@BlueSky-yj7ll when i was 14 yr old my father took me to an classical guitar instructor ,i learned to read notes that composers use for classical music, but i didnt learn how to read complex notes,like syncopa notes..which are used in jazz big band ,i got i job in cabaret night club in the late 70 i was 19yr old .my reading was not perfect , the director told me if i want to keep the job ,i need to be sight reader 100%..so i got some sight reading books from Berklee college , i practiced 6 hours a day. 7days.took me 6 months in the beginning and later 6 months to practice with violin ,sax,flute sight reading books and others 6 months for chords ..i did put a lots hours ,days ,years..i sight reader had to be on shape ,so i had to practice every day with different books...anybody can learn to read music ..you need motivation, time,peace of mind,and #1 learn where the notes are in the frets of the guitar without looking at.

You explained so very well the theory of the notes, etc. Thank you! When I studied the violin in Europe, I learned to read the notes only by “do re mi fa sol la si.” Why doesn’t the rest of the world read the notes similarly, and instead, they are reading the notes as “A B C D E F G.” For me it is very difficult now to switch to letters instead of the real names of the notes. it's a language thing. Germanic languages (german, english) use the CDEF notation and latin based languages use Do Re Mi Fa. It's the same in principle and you will get used to it in no time.
There also may be some religious explanation for the change since Do Re Mi comes from a religilous text from the Hymn to St. John the Baptist
Bebe It's easier to use ABCDEFG because sometimes it spell out words like ACE and FACE on the stave and BEA and BEAD in the key signature.

@@measurebymeasure3605When a note is above the middle line its stem should go down, not up. So what you did wrong was put the stem of the notes above the middle line up. You should have put it down if the note is above the middle line and the stem up if the note is below the middle line.

I have been playing violin since 9 years old, but back then, my teacher didn't teach me how to read musical sheet. He re-wrote the musical sheet into some rows of numbers. The numbers showed which finger should I use and which string should I bow. After a year, my teacher moved and I continue self-taught. 12 years later (now), I decide that I need to learn how to read musical sheet, and I found your videos.

It's like being taught by Mozart.. Probably much easier though, and hr probably only taught the gifted or monied.. Often, I am without a instrument. Today was one of the days..I tapped out the rhythm with one finger. I stopped the video before listening to the explanation.

That is a good Idea, I will. Probably more violin oriented but I might as well mention some piano.
Now, numbers can mean different things. Usually if they're Arabic numbers, meaning our regular numbers, then it is telling you which finger to use, and if it is a roman numeral it could either mean a chord inversion (which would be redundant) or a relative chord to the tonic. Meaning that if the song is played in C and you see a IV then it's telling you the chord shifted to the 4th of the tonic, an F, also called the sub-dominant.
But I am still unsure which numbers you are talking about, can you give me an example?

Ture, but he's obviously assuming it's a treble clef, it is probably the way most people learn music, I mean by first learning the treble clef, then they move on to the bass clef, etc.
you are absolutely right, but there is ALWAYS a clef sign. If there isn't you don't know.
On my short examples, I may have left them out since it's a violin video and the only clef is G.
@Ezugo Obuekwe Everyone needs to start somewhere. And it's only basic if you've been taught before, for those who haven't had the privilege and experience of such education, it's not basic at all.
A lot of people well versed in music may not know what a breve is, or even a double sharp, or how to read a baritone clef. Heck, I would bet most don't know what a harmonic anticipation is, or what it means to prepare a dissonance.
I don't know why I didn't think of it first, but despite its elementary nature, I'm not sure how many know what "Mixolydian" and "Locrian" are, not to mention the different types of minor scales, what relative and parallel, or similar and oblique mean in musical terms.
These could all be said to be basic things in music, but my point is that it's all relative, it depends on how much you've been taught.

He meant 3/4 ths. Maybe it was tree fourths. I've done a thousand you tube videos and I look back at some bloopers..they get taken off.. but it does give us funny mental pictures.
