“Gracias A La Vida” (Spanish for “Thanks for Life”) is one of the most famous folk songs in Latin America. It was written in 1966 by Chilean composer Violeta Parra. The lyrics are deeply spiritual and hopeful, and they resonate in ways that often defy words. This was my mother’s favorite song. She played it on her vinyl records, and often asked her musician friends to perform it. This was one of the songs of my childhood. Many months ago, during a period of musical experimentation (and writer's block), I reinterpreted this beautiful song, gave it a contemporary instrumental arrangement, and some new vocal melodies, but kept the quiet haunting quality of the original. In the end, I made it new and unique, similar to how many artists have expanded and transformed the acoustic guitar songs of Bob Dylan. My reinterpretation is a loving tribute to Violeta Parra, the songwriter who gave the world this much amazing song and took her own life in early February of 1967.
This is a licensed cover song, and as such I went through the trouble of getting a mechanical license from the publisher for the audio recording.
