Great video! I love every one you put out, you’re a joy to watch, so, thank you! Regarding garlic, bulb peak maturity corresponds with the number of remaining green leaves during die-back. Softnecks: aim for 6-7 remaining green leaves, Hardneck: aim for 4-6 remaining green leaves. Garlic puts on 12 leaves, with several cultivars starting their bulbing at the 10th leaf & then the lower leaves start dying off. Depending on where you are, each leaf will take 1-1.5 weeks to die off. Sometimes I am not perfect at harvesting according to hardneck or soft neck, (elephant garlic is technically a leek and not a true garlic), so as a general rule, I aim to harvest ALL my garlic at 6 (or at worst, 5) REMAINING green leaves. This gives the adequate amount of layers of skins required for optimal storage properties. I was very interested in this video as I am an avid garlic grower, it is my passion. I knew the grow bag ones would be small even before you showed them. Garlic like space between them (10-15cm) and free range for their roots to roam, lol. Grow bags are almost suffocating for them, and the only way they’ll do well in a grow bag is to plant one clove per bag. Not a good utilisation of space. But your other experiment - the ground ones, were fantastic! They had more distance and space between each other. I’m with you though, raised beds give me my best results. Well done 👏👏
Suggest you plant Gian sunflower and cut at soil in fall and plant tomatoes in its root ball in spring it will be almost no work and make most tomatoes

Not for overwintering, no. I am doing a fall potato test (I just planted those this week). And our winters are too cold to grow onions through the winter in zone 7b.
I have brought some garlic to plant this fall. Granted now that I already committed to it I'm wondering how well garlic does with some below freezing temps and some mountain snow in the winter as I live in east TN. Can they handle the snow cover?
Did you cut back on watering in the last weeks before harvest? I’ve read you were supposed. I saw that you interplanted with peppers and wondered if you adjusted your watering.
I love your videos very much but this really wasn't a fair comparison. The ones grown in the grow bags were planted way to close especially when you consider they were elephant garlic. That is one reason they were so small. The ones in the ground seemed quite crowded with the beans/tomatoes. Garlic needs space to fully develop.
Those particular beds were an experiment in different raised bed soil mixes I did several years ago. Since then, I've topped them with straight compost and shredded leaves. When curing your garlic, have you compared results between hanging them bulb-up vs bulb-down? I've seen it done both ways (always bulb-up for me) but wondering if there is a difference. Thank you.

No, we get plenty of rain in the spring usually so often I don’t turn on my irrigation til it’s almost ready to harvest anyway.

The bulbs harvested in this video were planted in the fall. The spring-planted garlic isn't ready yet.
All of the ones I harvested were planted in the fall, around November 1st give or take, which is my average first frost date.
