I always get the chills from the last lines: "The question is: Do you oil your war machines? Or... Do you feed them?"
I stand with the people saying this would be a great movie. It would be epic. I also think Studio Ghibli would do wonders for it.
It is one of those rare war-depicting gems that show both sides as equals, not making either one out to be the bad guys.

I still want a movie on the same scale as the LotR movies. But I don't trust Hollywood to get this series right as a Live Action film, after what's been done to Percy, Eragon, Ender, and Artemis Fowl. I want this as a three-hour animated epic, kark it all!

I first read Leiathan when I was 13 years old. Now, 10 years later, I reread it, and finally ordered the two last books in the series (Behemoth and Goliath), fullfilling a promise to myself to know what happens next in Alek's and Deryn's story. This book is just wonderful, and I highly recommend it. Greetings from Mexico!

I'm going to shamefully admit I'm not typically one who read often, due to my really short attention span while reading. But this was the first book in years that hit it off with me, I adore Deryn's character, and wish I could've been her! I appreciate the art added to the book, not only wonderfully drawn with detail, it also helped me visualise the characters and situations better! As someone who likes history, this was a really fun twist and full of adventure. I absolutely loved it and now have a favourite book that I can gush to people about! Like many others are saying, I think if this were turned into a movie it would be amazing! Done right, though. Even better, maybe a three-season Netflix-exclusive type thing. Regardless, I loved this book and can't wait to finish the trilogy ♡

The first thing u notice is Russia describe as a bear trying to take Austria but Germany has a Big Gun aiming at it( They will invade Russia later, 1940 i think) While France is describe as a wounded anteater fleeing away looking for help. While Italy is describe as a snake, Italy join the Axis but had other motive such as betraying Germany and leeching off Germany (asking for help). Simply amazing, though I can't make out Britain.

@Sakuragal212 another point to consider: animals can become ill, you have to feed them even when they are not in use, you have to cure them. A machine can be turned on or off.
A severed machine limb can be replaced. An animals' one doesn't.
Once you build a machine, it works. After an animal is born, you have to make him grow and train him.

"Way to confuse kids even more"
In the book itself, Westerfeld does say that it's an alternate history. At the end, he gives a list of what he's changed, and a short lesson on what the real story was.
Of course, it's not his job to instruct people on basic facts. It's his job to tell a damn good story, and he hit the ball out of the park with this one.

I bought this book and another at the same time, deciding the other one was better. I read about 25 pages to a great dissapoinment. But after reading this book, its probally placed in my top 3 favorite books. Nothing compares to how interesting this story is.

If this series or the Ugly series could just make a movie that would be great, thank you. I love Scott Westerfeld!

"Do you oil your war machines? Or do you feed them?" MAN that's a hell of a phrase. This'd make a great movie, instead of the cheap sequels and love films. I really have to read this, it's a lot like Mortal Engines but so different.

I just finished Goliath. A fantastic trilogy, and I may have never read it if I have not seen this trailer from a "War of the Worlds Goliath" link. Just to proove that video trailers for books is a fantastic marketing idea.

I hope one day Scott Westerfeld will write a Sequel Trilogy set during World War 2, I want to see what Clanker contraptions and Darwinist monsters will come out of that War.

how did this get an anime, I see my comments from 12 and 2 years ago on this video being absolutely bummed about this never getting a movie adaption.

Western material getting anime adaptations isn't exactly a new thing.
Like how Anne of Green Gables, Wizard of Oz and Little Women got a 50 episode long adaptations back in the 80s.
Or how Mass Effect, Halo and Supernatural got animes in the early 2010s.
Or Count of Monte Cristo and Deltora Quest back in the 2000s.

Well, its a typical cyberpunk novel with the crazy machines, and weird beasties, and all the usual 1920's adventure stuff, and the obligatory girl masquerading as a boy. BUT it does sound fun.
