Greatest speech since Keenedys speech against underground orginazation
An honest president before i was even born. Even from the UK, I wish our prime Ministers were this honest.
He got roasted for this.
People don't want honesty. They want easy solutions to complex problems.
They want the trains (cars and gas pumps in this case) to run on time (and not waste theirs).
It's sad, but one thing politicians learned from this speech, was people want the lies from their leaders that make them happy and ignorant.
Sometimes I wonder if we're truly worthy of Democracy and if the species (if certainly not the individual) wouldn't be better as an enslaved but happy cog in a giant machine they do not understand but that keeps them supplied with the necessities of life and a maybe once in a while a few of the luxuries.
We would make some benevolent alien species really great pets.
Prescient and underrated speech. If only we'd have better headed this advice then, than desperately trying now to salvage what we still can of this great country. I share his faith in the confidence of American ingenuity, might, and sacrifice. Maybe the people will sometimes be tricked to elect the actors and reality tv stars that inspire only the false confidence of ignorance. But I still have faith that in the run, it is truth that will always return triumphantly.
Posting this on the 40th anniv of this address, I was too young in those days but have an interest for that era, there’s no question he spoke from the heart as evidenced by the ‘05 book he authored ‘our endangered values’, still the non-energy themes were the idea of pollster pat caddell (died this yr interestingly) who in more recent yrs had been seen on fnc (thrilling viewers with negativity at his party), there r places you can deliver such mssgs but from the Oval Office is not one of them so no surprise hasn’t been duplicated since, interesting him saying ‘man on the moon 10 years ago’ bc this address was made the day before the 10 yr anniv of Apollo 11’s launch (what a difference in mood), the current pres (u know who) has taken shots at opec in the past so surprised hasn’t done that in a big way since being in office

Speaking of 10 yr anniv’s also chappaquiddick comes to mind, Ted spoke of a ‘curse’ after the incident so it was disingenuous of him to criticize carter for this address which was similar to Ted’s in how revealing both were (interestingly)
