  • In this video I show my CNC-lathe (HAAS TL-3) and highlight the parts of the design which I believe had potential for improvements and show how I went about fixing/improving the issues that I had with the design in order to make it perform at its best, to have as smooth as possible “workflow” when in operation…

We have a TL-3 at work. Our tailstock rides on air bearings. When viewing the tailstock from the handwheel end just above the right side linear rail there should be a port to plumb in shop air. Simply plumb in the air with a ball valve to shut it off when not in use. Our tailstock glides back and forth with little to no effort when the air is turned on. They may have changed this over the years ours is a 2010 model machine. Worth checking out anyway.

      Yes, 👍
I’ve seen those (air bearings) “floating/hovering” tail-stocks with next to no sliding resistance on other videos here on UA-cam, and I`ve strongly consider building this feature into my tailstock as it sometimes requires some “elbow grease” dragging this tail-stock back and forth in between exchanging drills.

      Hi Curtis,
The swing is is supposedly 20" (508mm),.. but I've never turned parts greater than 3" in this machine.

Chips should be chips. Not enough feed rate and DOC if they're stringing. Using a cover takes away from production times if you're making money on your parts. Make chips, not dips! Sick lathe non the less!

to buy a real cnc lathe should be avoid all these problems.
