This Failed Flying Car Was Supposed To Be Our Future... SO I BUILT ONE!

- Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am recreating the Moller Skycar M400. It was a person VTOL aircraft that was intended to essentially serve the function of the flying cars we have long imagined as being part of the future of the human race. Unfortunately, too many limitations held it back from becoming a mainstream reality. But it's not too late for it to become a Trailmakers reality

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

I actually do have some minor aerospace engineering experience, and to be honest... this seems like an actually fairly sensible design. There definitely could be something I'm missing, but it seems like it would be something that, with some computer automation, would actually be relatively easy to control. It's effectively a quadcopter during take-off, and then transitions to have some vertical lift which allows more efficient use of the thrust than staying in a quadcopter configuration. It seems pretty feasible to me. Still impractical though just on the fact that actually flying a plane is sort of the easy part of the things involved in flying a plane, so a somewhat easier to fly plane would not really make things a lot more regular consumer-accessible. They would still need a lot of training.
Yep, the problem of flying cars is not that we don't have the technology, is that we don't have the Ai to drive them, because if we let humans do it, "car" crashes will skyrocket
your verry smart
To be honest I was more interested in this comment than the video
@@alessiobenvenuto5159 "SKYrocket"
Thank you very much, as I've heard what he said I was quite irritated and frustrated. In the Original you btw also see that the front propellers are angled more upwards than the back propellers.
I noticed in the animation that the SkyCar seemed to use VTOL mode until it's at proper altitude, after which it transitions to horizontal flight for cruising at THAT altitude, I don't think it was really meant to gain too much altitude in that mode.
I don't know how or why I arrived here working from home and getting excited like a small boy to see SMs daily upload, but here we are. The thumbnail for this one looks so good!
lol yea
I think this whole series would be great to revisit after the airborne update, like seeing jets on this instead of props
i was about to comment that i was watching him as usual and i realized that i missed a bunch of his vids from this series wtich was my fav so i watched the "1920 sky car" one and saw this one and i was like wow he should really redo
I just remembered your channel and i am absolutely obsessed with it! i hope you make more multiplayer videos with your awesome friends, man, you're lucky for having them! I will support you from now on mate!
I remember reading that the ducts themselves provided most of the lift during forward flight. The wing was mostly for control and did not provide much of the lift during forward flight. It used elevons for control like a flying wing. You should have added small wing pieces to the ducts.
I was gonna say, in the irl video it shows that the intake are not 90 degrees when taking off, and at a part of the animation it shows that the rear of the duct is not horizontal, but slightly angled showing it still used the thrust to have lift.
this is the problem with the old "Future" stuff, they expected it to look cool, but since they didnt know how it would work, they left no space for actual functuanality. i bet this thing would not have enough fuel to fly for an hour.
4 combustion turbojet engines take metric tons of fuel, you really only need 1 or 2 and direct thrust downwards, even STOL is much more efficient.
I actually suspect that, if it were completed, it could go a lot longer than that. It would certainly be less efficient than a regular light airplane, but it's pretty typical for a 4-seat general aviation plane to be able to fly for 3-5 hours with full cargo weight limit, and get a range of 300+ miles. Nicer ones can exceed 500 miles on a tank with about 500-600 pound total carrying capacity while fully fueled. Of course, these planes run a cool $250,000+ price tag.
Back of the envelope type calculations, but I think it would be reasonable for this concept to get at least half that range with the same carrying capacity.
Edit: Removed incorrect musings about engine type and all.
@@daanoffline5716 the original design isn't for turbojets. They're just ducted propellers. This is actually a perfect choice for this type of system, as they're more efficient at lower speeds and lower altitude than turbojets or turbofans are. It's why still to this day brand new planes with only a few passenger capacity are propeller planes.
skycar m400 was apparently supposed to be able to fly for 6 hours tho
@@discoadri633 that is still shorter than a school day for kids in the US, which is 8-9 hours

Inventions back in the day were hilarious
Except the medical one's
the expectations were just never met
Only just because we back in the day were more creative
The enventions In the 80s and 90s
Is a good idea but bad at the same time.
Overall are hilarious to
You should check out the VZ-9 Avrocar.
The worlds first (and only) "official" flying saucer.
First, probably yes. But the predecessor of this one, the original Moller M200 (now named Neuera 200, according to their homepage), looked just like the cliché of a flying saucer, too: pilot (+ passenger, if any) in the center, under a 'fish bowl' canopy, eight props in a circle blowing their air flow downwards through the 'saucer'... Only concession to reality: a fin sticking up behind the pilot, to keep it flying somewhat straight ahead in forward mode...
Flying sauce
@@CoPoint I forgot all about that one. Thanks for pointing it out.
@@BLKBRDSR71 No problem - was just wondering a bit why the 'little brother' didn't get at least a short mention in the video, as it looked so much like the proverbial saucer... seemed like a missed opportunity 😁...
@@CoPoint I believe he built this to test his idea of using compound fans driven by Wankel type rotary engines
Do Stridsvagn 103. This is a tank without a turret, and the gun is fixed in the body and does not move. Hydraulic suspension is used for vertical aiming.
a tank that is truly wedge gang approved
Ohhh yasssss , I'm a world of tank player
@@jasonmyboi8792, Strv 103 It's not a tank destroyer, it's a main battle tank, just without turret.
and he also played with it in teardown
Stridsvagn 103* Also im swedish and its a really intressting tank
I am loving this series. "Scrapman finds and fixes obscure designs". It is proving to be a genius decision
I remember when this thing was hot news and everyone was hyped thinking it was gonna be available in a couple years, replacing ALL cars...even as a child I took one look at it and said, "that thing's gonna fail..." and like you my first thought was, "this is a private aircraft but WORSE..."
I watched one of your videos a couple years back after watching Neebs Gaming play scrap mechanic, you came back into my feed and I am so glad you did. Your videos are top tier. I love the videos where you recreate old machines the most, but all your content is consistent and good. Also, your problem solving skills are insane.
“we should be in the future by now”
and i should be done with 200 more things
You my friend made an incredible machine. I am awestruck at both the looks and the fact it functions perfectly.
Hi Scrapman! Love your vids!!
The control of the aircraft is coming from the engines tilting, I've actually planned to make something alike this plane/car in stormworks
Scrap man I have amazing idea for videos that go along with recreating historic vehicles. My idea is picking successful or failed vehicles and recreate them and make them modern or futuristic.
I'd love to see you play some Space Engineers and Nimbatus Scrapman! Your videos always make my day!
I've seen people recommend he play Space Engineers before. I also think it would be a great fit for him
Another real life recreation you should make is the Me P1109. This was a success design but had a very interesting design... you'll see why. It was a jet powered bi-plane that angle its wings oppositely to reduce drag at high speeds.
Looks cool, kudos to ScrapMan for making it work!
The concept art reminds me of the Raptor Electric Private Aircraft by Peter Muller in the Raptor Aircraft concept project.(it's a chonk blue plane with 3 ducted propellers) and I think that would be a fun one to build in Scrap Mechanic or Trailmakers.
The airborne update would be really good for this creation
yes
it has a lifting body effect to help with the lift in the back
The front engines had a ducting apparatus that split the thrust for elevon/aileron roll control. I can only explain it as a sort of bendy Venetian blind slats that were to be fly by wire type controlled. But during vertical and hover the nacelles tilted then transitioned to horizontal flight
When building propellor thongs like these, use pistons to pull the propellor down into the tube thing. It doesn't have collision on the blades, just the 2 by 1 block at the bottom. Using this you can also kinda merge more than one propellor , when before you couldn't because of the hitbox
If you watch the takeoff/landing videos again, I’m fairly certain the front fans were ducted with redirection of thrust to counteract the lack of forward lifting surfaces. You could probably get this to work without the added wing segments between the engine pods and the ‘car’.
lol what is this timing, this is the earliest I've ever been to watch a video
just under 5 minutes after being uploaded LOL
Haven’t watched but I bet this will be a good video as always! Cheers
Cheer him for his career
Hi Scrapman, have you ever tried Kerbal Space Program? I think it could become a staple of the channel!
Bump
im not that sure if all the viewers would like it, but amazing idea and im not sure if he can do it that easily
so close to 700K!
a housewarming gift maybe?
Hey scrap man I love your Vids! please carry on with this series cause I love when you recreate Irl stuff ~ Me
same
I used to live the dry creek bed behind the facility. When i was homeless. I meet Doc.Moller once. If want more information I'd be happy to share.
The wings on the vehicle looks like its trying to form a heart shape lol
There is something that is being worked on. It's like a VTOL car for getting people to places faster, like an Uber. If things go smoothly, we might have some flying cars in about 6 years!
If you like weird VTOL vehicles you should look at the Garrow Verticopter. I think it is a really cool concept and a good looking one at that. I'd be curious how you'd recreate it in trailmakers.
I imagine if you did more quad steering (slowing CCW motors to spin CW and vice versa) in VTL mode, and using differential in forward flight would fix the issues with yaw. Though I have no idea if that's possible in this game, so *shrug*, but awesome video nonetheless!
Cool vehicle. Would definitely need a barf bag dispenser!
cool video, keep up the good work.
You should do some drawn up tank designs that were never made like the P. 1000 Ratte or some tanks that never saw combat like the Maus, or maybe something that actually worked but would be hard to make, the Mark IV
Lmao scrapman saying " I'm not going to put the wings at the back" then saying he needs more lift at the back 😂
You're assuming the wing is used for lift, instead of for controlling the pitch. It's easier to fine-tune the pitch using wings, than it is using the engines' thrust.
my theory is that the jets had thrust vectoring, because when it shows the aircraft taking off the jets are at an angle instead of being completely perpendicular to the ground. that also explains the lack of control surfaces on the wings.
Your videos make my day.
i never knew what yah was until this thx!
This made me laugh :D "I'm no aerodynamics expert, but based on my experience in Trailmakers...."
ima remake this with the airbourne update thanks for the idea
Keep Up the good work Billy (scrapman)
You know there's a WORKING flying car out right now!!!
Once he started doing this I’ve been thinking “HURRY MAKE AS MUCH FAILED STUPID INVENTIONS QUICKLY SO SCRAP MAN CAN FIX THEM!!!!”
Aircraft with wings rear of the center of gravity are actually pretty viable efficiency and stability wise provided that your control surfaces can provide enough torque to rotate the aircraft, given that this plane uses engines as canard control surfaces it seems pretty viable to me
This look very interesting
Might be fun to build something inspired by the VF-1 from Macross. Obviously the actual Valkyrie wouldn''t be possible, but some sort of vehicle that can transform between Jet and Humanoid form, with the optional in-between "jet with legs" mode, could be a cool challenge.
Ah yes the vehicle I used to pilot in Flight Simulator X back in 2012. As soon as I saw the image of the 400 version I immediately had flashbacks of FSX. Glad to see it back. Also, that demonstration video was FSX, pretty sure.
ye you right
just move the wings forward, in the middle, but you also have body lift, for what that amounts to, as percentage, a drone does not have wings
t-tail for vertical control
keep it simple engineers
are you in some hurry
all possible, use electric motors with metal-air fuel cells, for real
if you cant, you are a failure, not the goal
There are several planes without elevators
One example is the “euro fighter” and “avro Vulcan” they combine the functions of elevators and ailerons into one control surface
They are very common on fighter jets and the f22 is very reliant on them
I think you should play Main Assembly for some of this builds.
You should program a condition that enforces the wings to be unfolded when not in VTOL mode. Probably a simple logical OR gate would suffice.
At the age of 59, I am giving up on flying individual transport, at least for me, lol. You do wake a person up though! Danger is better than Caffeine!
Scrapman, I got an idea. Make a beyblade and surround it with magnets facing outwards and use thrusters to rotate it. Use a swivel to cancel out the beys rotation and place another swivel on top of it and place some thrusters to use for changing directions (in instruments of destruction)
With our current technology, a personal flying vehicle is very easy to achieve, the biggest setback to it becoming a public mainstay, is the logistics behind developing an entire new traffic system.
Edit: This thing did become a success, this project most likely was some form of inspiration for the V-22 Osprey.
Make a survival series in mulitplayer in scrapmechanic.
Love Your videos.
how they came up with these inventions is soo hilarious 😂
Trial and error, man! Trial and error.
1:49 I thought it looked familiar. They featured this on discovery Channel on a show called 2057 when I wad younger.
You should build the 200. It is much more flawed and as a result would be much more interesting to build.
I think it would be cool if you tried to create a synchronization gear mechanism, the invention that allowed WWI planes to shoot through their own propellers!
there was some kind of flaps in engines to crontrol engine flow a bit down. Thats why engines was more like 45-50 degrees.. Maybe. Regardless they wasnt 90 degrees when landing. And flying forward engines gives some lift force as forward too. And engines was for direction of movement for get air in to engines.
Hello scrapman love your vids and would you say it flys like a paper plate because there is no vertical stabilizer
You should revisit this concept with the new spacebound parts
I would like too see another video of this but with the new blocks
I see people doing the worst trouble every day by driving in 2D, I have a sense of dread (and horror) at the thought of what would happen by moving vehicular traffic to the third dimension
Overengineering idea for SM - to build a spud gun radar action vehicle that breaks burned trees into ember with spuds so you could vacuum it
I watch a vid everyday to help me fall asleep thanks
Imagine how many idiots there are on the roads currently.... Then imagine those same idiots in the sky!!
I sincerely hope they never release 'Sky cars' on the public!
Great video's man,, keep the content coming.
Plz can you make a The Welte-Mignon: "The master himself...his own fingers at your keyboard"

The Welte-Mignon was a twist on the player pianos that existed in the early 1900s - pianos that played pre-recorded music using automated cylinders. While most player pianos emphasized the music, Welte-Mignons emphasized the actual performance. Famous pianists could sit down at a Welte-Mignon and play songs, and then the piano would "record" their performance on rolls. People could then take the rolls, put them in their home Welte-Mignon, and listen to the exact same performance.
im so happy you have no idea 0:31
Damn
Real flying cars
You should buld the Klein Vision Flying Car
it trasforms from a plane to a car
It would be hilarious if the next actual prototype was this
Scrapman, you made a mistake, the wings on the Skycar are supposed to be below the back propellers, there was enough room for them under there.
Hello Scrapman and Community, found your channel and love your vids! Since i started playing scrap mechanic recently myself i wanted to ask if someone knows which mods Scrapman used in his survival series? Even if you only know of one mod id be thankful for that information. Or what mods would you guys recommend for survival? Thanks!!
I noticed the jets were angled forward in VTOL mode so I'm guessing the lift in horizontal mode comes from the thrust being redirected.
You should try and make a Cyclocopter
So cool
It looked like the front props stayed slightly up as if to give the lacked lift
You should revisit this with the new tail propellers
You should totally make an octopus vehicle.
me: oh,that ting is slower than the go kart i drive
next when he add more props: aw man, fine you beat me.
Make it with the new blocks maybe is different
4:00 ScrepMan I think that the curved wings gives the stability. I mean the wings at the top of the curve
There’s no car on that thing! It’s just sky!
being and aerospace engineer yeah they would have had problems with thrust to weight and center of pressure and lift because of the wings being in the back with engines and no tail but they can be solved with auto stabilization and movie the engines in flight for thrust vector control to stabilize the craft in flight along with have at least 2 control surfaces on each wing 1 for stabilization and one for control.
If you want an even better flying car, I would recommend the AVE Mizar, which killed its own inventor
The car probably didn't like existing if it killed its inventor
TBH, I think the really weak way it was flying before he doubled the engines is probably fairly accurate to what you could have expected IRL lol.
You should really check out balsa model flight sim, if you really want real world flight physics. Still in early access but great for testing plane designs. Doesn't have helicopter physics yet but people are getting good at manipulating the current flight physics. I had made a vtol pod racer. Took hours upon hours to get to work 😂
when the wings are folded they look like a bird flexsing its musels
Why not use Main Assembly for this kind of projects? I mean projects will come out more aesthetically pleasing, and also with lot more complex functionality.
Can you do the Robert Bartini's ground effect aircraft carrier.
3:57 you just freaking ignore the tail wing that built in with the Delta wing
lol try to recreate the famous porsche flip at road atlanta, where the porsche GT1 car flew 20+ feet into the air and backflipped a few times
