The smart thing to do, as an artist get signed save your money do your job for how long your contract is for and when it’s over use your money that you saved to make your own label and become a boss learn the business before you step into it

Questo Young great if you want to be independent and you’re content with your fan base, if you want to be a household name then eventually you’ll need a machine

What happens if you get a poor advance, get locked into a 1+6 deal and an exclusive license? Sure, $20k advance looks shiny, but if it takes me 10 years to complete my record deal, I don’t recoup $20k, and I can’t work for other labels for the duration of my contract, I’ll never see a dime from the label.

They not gone tell you the truth.
    ARTIST are being screwed royally
    Labels need artists
    Artist don’t NEED labels
Labels NEED artists to BELIEVE they need labels
Labels NEED artists to be dependent upon them in order to continue to drain money out of a culture that they don’t invest in nor want the best for
Most wont tell you this because they risk losing money/opportunity 🤷🏾‍♂️

I disagree with artist not needing labels. Yes you can have a career being independent, but there is a reason why pretty much every big artist is associated with a label. The marketing machine is just unmatched. Kanye, Jay, Beyonce, Drake, Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, Cole, Kendrick, Adele, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande etc are all signed to major record labels. If you want to be the household name who sells out stadiums around the world, then yes you need the marketing machine to push you as well. Independent artists just don't have those connects to get radioplay and what not

As the author said, most of this money is coming from the live side of entertainment. The thing about live shows is there are a lot of people who need to get paid for a gig to succeed. The agent has to schedule each show and negotiate the deal with the venue for how much the artist will be paid. The promoter pays for/works out the details of each show and makes sure people show up. The manager works on developing the artist's live show, brand and business. The record company develops recorded music and makes sure the right people are familiar with it. The venue handles the logistics and actually houses the show. There are a lot of moving parts that all need to be paid.
It might seem weird that the artist is only getting a fraction of the revenue, but there are so many jobs to do and if one of them doesn't get done well, everyone's bottom line suffers. And within those roles the promoter is often the one who is taking the real risk. If it costs $50,000 to rent an arena, $10,000 to handle the concert's production, and $30,000 to market a show, the promoter is paying out $90,000 for that show, not the artist. And if not enough tickets are sold to cover expenses, the artist still gets their fee, the promoter eats the loss. So when there is gain, a big chunk of it goes to the promoter, hence why Live Nation is seeing massive growth right now.

Important conversation. Bottom line is that money needs to be distributed more evenly than it currently is. Signing the MMA into law will push the needle in the right direction but artists need a way to directly monetize their audiences rather than being platform-dependent.

    because 12% of 1.000.000 $ is still more than 100% of 2000$
Also you have to pay a LOT of people from this money, song recording, videos, managers, producers, ....

Just keep it real and straight to the point man. Records labels and everyone else steal and rob artists of their hard earned money. The business model of the industry has always been that way. The artist does most if not all the work while receiving the least and getting it last. It's never been in the industry's interest to be fair to or make the artist rich. It's the complete opposite as a matter of fact. No different than an employee at a 9 to 5. It's either you work for someone else or work completely for yourself. That's the system.

  • @EhlieLuna
    @EhlieLuna 6 років тому +7

It’s so crazy! I’m 💯 indie and invest out of my own pocket for everything I do. Knowing I have the option to be an owner instead of going the traditional route which is full of ppl that don’t actually care about the artist is literally everything. If a major gets involved it has to be a partnership and not a traditional deal. Better to build leverage it seems.

9 times out of 10 it's the melody that the musician or producer composed that give the singer or rapper what's needed to harmonize on a song they just have to fill in the words. Now some the best like Michael Jackson & Eminem will have the melody in their head and just need a musician to play what their mind came up with.

It costs a fortune to break a new artist/record. Most artist don't have that front money to push their records thru all the available marketing and distribution channels in a short period of time. The label is just a MARKETING firm for artists providing services/support. An artists would take on the role of the label and have to hire staff and pay operational overhead.
Back in the day wasn't the artist signing to an artist manager who worked for the label they were signed to the throwback 360 deal ??? All those artists support people like artist mgrs, business mgrs, entertainment attorneys, accountants, agents etc...all take their % from Gross not Net...that's the other financial rookie move artists make... how you going to pay them from what you didn't get.

Don't have the exact figures but Parks from the Joe Budden Podcast mentioned on their most recent episode that this "12%" figure is coomprable to other industries. Lawyers make around that much of the revenue generated from Court cases, doctors make around that much of the money generated in hospitals.
I know we look at musicians as deserving of a wolf's share of the money generated off the backs of their art, but there is a lot that goes into tracks being put before you outside of just stepping into the booth and putting it online.

seethrufaded That's a illogical comparison though. The healthcare industry generates trillions of dollars a year. The Music industry only generates billions. So 12% of trillions is incomparably more than 12% of billions. Don't just listen to what people say, you should think for yourself. Those industries generate more than the music business, and the people that are apart of those are probably share holders of music labels. Making 12cents on the dollar isn't what doctors or lawyers make. They earn up to $80-$100hr and they don't have to payout to 5 or more different people. Don't listen to Joe buddens podcast and take it serious.lol

Everybody saying start your own label acts like it is the for sure route to making money lol. what y'all need to be saying is "Start your own label if you're prepared to spend 10-20 years of hard work, and spending ALOTT of money for promotion with influencers, radio, hosting your own events, etc. etc." There's a harsh reality to get over when starting your own label. It isn't that simple dudes. Unless you know people in the industry, have hella money already saved to throw away, or someone puts you on, prepare for the tough Tech n9ne grind. Majors have a lock and gatekeepers that have been there since their creation that keep things the way they are for the most part. Making your own label is just the beginning of the solution..it is not THE solution. I'm not saying to sign at all, just that it isn't as simple as yall's simple comments make it out to be. Trust me, I know. #BlackBusiness5OutNow

I wish they wouldve discussed having a sound business model prior to looking to get into bed with a major. For example, what are the fundamental parts of a business that would get a musicians portfolio, or "demonstration" as Tiffany called it, off the ground to prove to an A&R that the talent is worth the investment.
What do these demonstrations look like on paper, what does the artist need to present in these meetings with industry officials. Is it just a social media page, or is it actual numbers with analytics? get into detail..

It seems - incomprehensive - that there isn't for instance, any government, website, for artists to sell their art, with less than a 50% take by whoever has the connections - ? - stress-time, to invest in one of those sites, taxes being what they are. There are thousands of ways we could as capitalist, too, become an equally high producing mature equal world of nations.
Can you imagine if a nation did not just parcel out necessarily at the closest skimming of all principles for hell! of securing that high a percentage of such a large industry/responsibility that completely! failed in this country under capitalist suppression - the damn' point.

    So...
I have no respect for anyone who signs. 80% that do also have writers who write shit for them.

On the surface this looks bad. Real bad. But...when I put up all the money and assume all the risk, I deserve a large piece of the money. At least on the first contract. Tons of stories of artist that just didn’t pop. No one counts the money that’s the label (small or large) lost. Looking at profits is one thing, but let’s also discuss the losses.
