    Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

I started at 31 and im 32 now. Tom Clancy started writing at 38. Many screenwriters start late. Its actually better to start late due to life experience

    • @MarkSandersonakaScriptcat
      @MarkSandersonakaScriptcat 6 років тому +6

Indeed. Now, older, you certainly have something to say and life experience to make your work authentic. Ageism does exist in Hollywood for writers, but the screenplay should do the talking for you regarding your ability. If you have something "amazing" producers will notice and they can't help but produce it. That's the elusive part!

NO better time. Better to start at 40 than 80, right? Plus, I'm sure you have a great deal of life experience and something to add to your writer's "voice." Passion, tenacity, authenticity, and drive will get you through - oh, and having a solid game plan for your pursuit. Always be planning on the next one and the one after that. Best wishes on your journey.

    "Make it" where?
I read the other day an 86 year old man became a lawyer.
"Make It" is a made up limit.
If you are alive and surviving, You "made it."
You are the onlyone who will make it and make it happen. It does help to have friends and help them too cuz it will all come back to you, but most importantly they will remember you and your goodness.

Yes, every day is a blessing and even more if you're doing what you love. Many people have a perception of what "making it" in Hollywood means - red carpets, , parties, huge paydays, a house in the hills, blah, blah. Everyone has their own story of what "making it" means. Being able to get paid to do what you love is making it in my humble opinion. Thanks for watching.

Mark Sanderson - CoSign. This is it. In the eyes of my family and friends "I made it" when I got a good 9 to 5, brought my house and my wife gave birth to our first child. Meanwhile, I was like meh... The dream still lingered and rested upon my troubled brow. Lol. To tell people this would seem insane but its "making it" has always seemed to me like doing your dream as a 9 to 5 and supporting your family at the same time.

I started writing at age 37 and it has taken me ten years and many, many screenplays to finally write at the professional level. I haven't sold anything yet, but I'm hoping this year I'll sell a few :) I could not have written the mini-series I just completed ten years ago, or even just a few years ago. After writing and writing, and writing, something finally clicks and you "get" it.

This is an excellent advice, my dad once told me: "you young people act as if life will be over at the age of 40" he is 71 years old and he still has a lot of goals, he is learning how to play the guitar, he is getting ripped and he wants to learn how to use the computer (I'm helping him with the last one)
This interview has opened my eyes because sometimes I feel very stressed about writing: what if i never finished a decent script?? what if i never sell it? what if I do this and I never see any results before being 30 ?? sometimes I used to compare myself to other people of my age, classmates, friends etc. and I felt like a loser but now I believe that If you feel passion for something you will enjoy the road more than the destination and success could be a consequence of that process. The thing is don't giving up that easy.
For example Taylor Sheridan or Samuel L. Jackson didn't become famous at a young age, dreams have no deadline and that's the importance of this message.
Thank you so much for this Film Courage, the job you do is really helpfull and this collaborations makes this one of my favorite youtube channels. I'm 25 and I'll start to write.

I think this is a part of the old people conception our grandparents had that 'you're useless from a certain age'. Nowadays people live at least to the 80 years old. It's just an idea in our mind not a reflection of something else. I'm 27 years old, I always loved movies but it is until now that finally I began to wright. As anybody else I am insecure, but that's the thing, to beat the fear and go on

This is a foolish statement and perspective; I started with screenwriting at age 40, sold my first script to a big producer, got the third largest ever budget for a movie (in my country), and it will start shooting with a famous Hollywood director, spring 2022. This process took three years, but I sold my script 6 months after learning how to write a script, the formatting of it I mean. Because at age 40, or older, you have a lot of life experience. And perspectives, making you a great storyteller, you just need to know the formatting and structure of a script...

Definitely some aspirations have a timeclock for making it BIG - thankfully, writing isn't one of them. The pov of " I've made it bcause I'm in it "is great. It doesn't mean you don't aspire to more or compete - even with yourself. My thought for writers -anyone- would be to celebrate our victories small and large. Small wins lead to bigger wins but the joy needs to be found throughout the journey. Else you mighta made a left turn at Albuquerque

You're always (as you probably know) striving to do better and write your next project that much better than the last. We learn with every new project and working with new other creatives. It's an ongoing life learning experience being an artist. Agreed, we all have to celebrate the little successes along the way because they add up and it's the journey, not the destination.

Experiencing trauma wouldn't make you a good or even decent writer. Just because you have a story to tell doesn't make you good storyteller. You also don't have to experience something to write about it. That's what research is for. Hell, writers write fictional stories about shit they've never been through all the time. Also, just because you're young doesn't mean you don't have a story to tell. A lot of what makes a good writer is experience writing, not necessarily just experience in general.

I think some writers or directors start of as actors and work their way up. Just like any job you don't just start in a supermarket and become manager the first day you start. Most have done courses and worked their way up. I think that's the case in every job environment. Just because you do one good script that doesn't make a good writer, it shows potential. You have to learn the competition, what people like and don't like. You have to learn what is on the market so if you do something you have to know how it can be different. But again that is like with any jobs. In the food industry the same process or similar process is done for the food products. I guess it is knowing your audience and keeping them happy. Even in a supermarket, which is a manager more likely to hire someone that is miserable and grumpy or someone who is happy. They pick the people the customers are going to be happier around, because it makes the experience better.

My idea being I’m going to work my ass off and save as much as I can for how ever long it takes, while continuing to develop my script and skills. For a project I’ll be doing with a friend who also did the same, but in another city.
It’s been a few months now and here I’ve no friends, when I’m asked what plans do I have I just lie. And lately it’s been kinda hard, but videos like these and how my friend is still on board keeping in contact about progress on his side; it gives me hope.

You always have to keep the faith, Robert. As long as you are writing, you are in the game. The key is writing something that is unique and showcases your talents, ability, and "voice" as a writer. And never go out with a script and not have at least one if not two more to back it up. You will always be asked, "what else do you have?" And you'd better have a good answer with something to show. No, don't wait, but you'll need the time to become an excellent screenwriter and that comes from experience -- and that takes time. Not one screenplay, but many. It will take probably three to five just to find your style and get comfortable with the medium. Maybe not. Screenwriting is an ongoing learning experience and journey. Hopefully, you continue to grow and learn as a writer. After 35 feature length screenplays written on my journey so far, I'm still learning. Be careful only writing what you've seen before on TV and films. The "personal experience" part helps to make the writing and stories authentic.

That is something for you to decide. Truly, I never put an expiration date on my screenwriting dreams. Now, the longer you pursue this endeavor, your opinion about the business can change. We can't all be A list writers, but we can work - and that's been my dream. You never know if you quit, that opportunity was a day away, but the paths did not cross. Or you can chase a crazy dream like going to the hardware store for bread every day (doing the same thing but expecting different results). I think you have to weigh the time you put in and the years of seeing some type of success. Maybe if you write ten scripts and don't achieve any forward movement over the span of five years... maybe this endeavor isn't for you. But if you want to do it until your last breath, that's entirely a soul searching and honest question you have to ask yourself. It's tough. Passion, talent, right place, right project certainly helps.
