As a military man who has served in Asia I can tell you this story is like a trip down memory lane. Miss Saigon and Madam Butterfly are based in the kind of events that happened and continue to happen anywhere ameicans are sent! Lea's portrayal is marvelous in displaying the raw emotion of these kinds of love stories wrapped in far away cultures!
poorer asian countries only see the so-called 'american dream' and military men only in it for the prostitution...cheap sex. for a love story to happen in real life like these scenarios is very very rare. only the war and killings are real events.
@@sgtjoe2008 A lot of what you say is true but I saw personally that "love" happens more often than you think. Loneliness of service members in a faraway land and young asian girls forced into situations working at clubs or on the street spark co-dependencies that at the time seem like love. Many of these Asian girls are abandoned or given promises that are never fulfilled. A number of them come as brides to America but then reality sets in and the divorce rate is high and their dream becomes nightmare. On the other hand there are the "rare" cases where they live long happy lives with a devoted man. I know a number of such people in my sphere of friends!
Thanks for sharing your story. "Highway to Heaven" did several episodes about the aftermath of the Vietnam War, if you want to check them out. A couple of the episodes, including "Dust Child," deal with love between American soldiers and Vietnamese women, love that produced children.
I've seen Miss Saigon twice. The first time without her and the 2nd time when she was reprising her role as Kim. I knew I had to see her perform it. Now I bought tickets for the new show in 2017. I know all I will be doing is comparing but no one will ever come close to Lea's Kim.
I felt the same way but Eva Noblezada plays the role of Kim tremendously and in her own way. Jon Jon Briones is also a fantastic Engineer. The entire cast and company does a splendid job of telling the story. I actually like the new adaptions they have change. It almost a completely different show. Even thought the only complete song change/ addition was "Maybe" for "Now that I've seen her" which gave Ellen a completely new persona. Do your best not to compare. Regardless, I know you'll enjoy the show!
I was lucky enough to see her reprising the role. I didn’t even realize how lucky I was before the show, but I sure as shit did once she sang her first note.

Sorry, she sing great. She's not mentioned because she played a minor supporting role and her appearance is toward the end. The show is about Kim and Chris.
OMG! I just realized, the lyrics "I know, as long as I can keep believing, I'll live." That's why she killed herself at the end, cause she stopped believing because Chris already had a wife. 😢
Elijah Enciso and also because she knew that while she was still alive Chris and Ellen won't take Tam with them. But without her around they'll have no choice but to take Tam as their own
All three characters in this scene are suffering in this scene, which is sad, but "I Still Believe" is a hopeful song. Lea Salonga and Lisa Capps did a wonderful performance here. I love the stage production in this, showing that Ellen and Chris are above Kim - a neat use of symbolism in the storyline!

Lea, was the perfect person to play the Kim the lead in Miss Saigon, and Simon the perfect Chris. Both with fantastic voices, after listening to the other girls and guys who followed them in the newer productions of Miss Saigon, none can compare or even come close to Lea and Simon. I love all musicals pretty much but in the past musicals like these are absolutely masterpieces of theate and genius composing. It transports me to some unknown place but I feel the epicness of it all. By far one of my favorite musicals of all time.
