I feel like Ellen wearing the UCLA shirt was such a great touch. It makes the contrast between her life and Kim's so stark.

As a military man who has served in Asia I can tell you this story is like a trip down memory lane. Miss Saigon and Madam Butterfly are based in the kind of events that happened and continue to happen anywhere ameicans are sent! Lea's portrayal is marvelous in displaying the raw emotion of these kinds of love stories wrapped in far away cultures!

poorer asian countries only see the so-called 'american dream' and military men only in it for the prostitution...cheap sex. for a love story to happen in real life like these scenarios is very very rare. only the war and killings are real events.

@@sgtjoe2008 A lot of what you say is true but I saw personally that "love" happens more often than you think. Loneliness of service members in a faraway land and young asian girls forced into situations working at clubs or on the street spark co-dependencies that at the time seem like love. Many of these Asian girls are abandoned or given promises that are never fulfilled. A number of them come as brides to America but then reality sets in and the divorce rate is high and their dream becomes nightmare. On the other hand there are the "rare" cases where they live long happy lives with a devoted man. I know a number of such people in my sphere of friends!

Thanks for sharing your story. "Highway to Heaven" did several episodes about the aftermath of the Vietnam War, if you want to check them out. A couple of the episodes, including "Dust Child," deal with love between American soldiers and Vietnamese women, love that produced children.

I've seen Miss Saigon twice. The first time without her and the 2nd time when she was reprising her role as Kim. I knew I had to see her perform it. Now I bought tickets for the new show in 2017. I know all I will be doing is comparing but no one will ever come close to Lea's Kim.

I felt the same way but Eva Noblezada plays the role of Kim tremendously and in her own way. Jon Jon Briones is also a fantastic Engineer. The entire cast and company does a splendid job of telling the story. I actually like the new adaptions they have change. It almost a completely different show. Even thought the only complete song change/ addition was "Maybe" for "Now that I've seen her" which gave Ellen a completely new persona. Do your best not to compare. Regardless, I know you'll enjoy the show!

Last night I watched him sleeping,
    My body pressed to him.
    And then he started speaking.
The name I heard him speak was Kim...
Yes, I know that this was years ago,
But when moonlight fills my room I know
    You are here, still.
    I still-
    I still believe
    You will return.
    I know you will.
    My heart against all odds
    Holds still.
    Yes, still,
    I still believe.
I know as long as I can keep believing,
    I'll live.
    I'll live,
    Love cannot die.
You will return, you will return,
    And I alone know why...
Last night I watched you sleeping.
    Once more the nightmare came.
I heard you cry out something,
A word that sounded like a name.
And it hurts me more than I can bear
Knowing part of you I'll never share,
    Never know.
    But still-
    I still believe
    The time will come
    When nothing keeps us apart.
My heart forever more holds still.
    It's all over I'm here,
    There is nothing to fear!
    Chris, what's haunting you?
    Won't you let me inside
What you so want to hide.
    I need you too!
    Ellen: Kim:
I will Hold you all night for still
I will make it all right
You are safe with me I still believe
And I wish you could tell As long as I
What you don't want to tell Can keep believing
You can sleep now I'll Live... I'll live
You can cry now You will return
I'm your wife now And I know why
    For life I'm yours

Even knowing the show inside out including the lyrics for most of the songs, I still get choked up when Ellen's character first appears in the show with this song. There are so many wonderful songs in the show, but if I could only listen to three, this would be one of them. Absolutely! 2:58 gave me goosebumps. Lea Salonga is legendary and deserves all of the praise that she receives, but all of the other actors in this production deserve appreciation too, as they were all brilliant.

Miss Saigon is a musical that just moves you. It's amazing on another level. I love all musicals pretty much but in the past musicals like these are absolutely masterpieces of theate and genius composing. It transports me to some unknown place but I feel the epicness of it all. By far one of my favorite musicals of all time.

I was lucky enough to see the original West end cast all those years ago. I managed some years later to download the music to my Ipod and was listening to it on a business flight but started crying at this song. Had to turn it off! The music and voices were immense and no show I have seen since has moved or impressed me as much.

abcde2 abcde1 let's be honest. He wasn't the greatest of a person. Lied to Ellen, completely betrayed Kim-I've always believed it's his fault that Kim killed herself. If they had agreed to take Tam, she would have still been alive.

      It's not Chris it's war that's cruel.

    • @MichelleMyBelle2121
      @MichelleMyBelle2121 6 років тому +65

Let's face it, Chris and Kim were victims of the Vietnamese war. They were torn apart. A lot of people were. Plus Chris and Kim weren't legally married. If they were then that would be a completely different story. Chris did nothing wrong with moving on with Ellen. Plus Ellen cared about him immensely as shown in this song. So I don't see why people hate her. She was good for him and was exactly what he needed as a PTSD victim because she had a calming effect on him. There was a time and place for Kim as well, it just didn't work out between her and Chris because of the war. Ellen was just meant to be his life partner. That's just how it went down.
