I just found out that Piper Laurie passed away yesterday at 91. She's been in other movies, but I loved her performances in Twin Peaks & Carrie. RIP 😢
Amazing how she's aged so gracefully through the decades. She was 44 when she made Carrie and barely had a wrinkle on her face. 90 now and still looking great.
Good lord. Piper Laurie is 90 with a memory more vivid than most who're years and years younger. Such a treasure house of memories.
The vastly underrated Piper Laurie!
Yes, she should have had the Oscar for "Carrie," at the least.
We can only hope next Oscars she will be given an Honorary Oscar.
Couldn't agree more. One of the most underrated actresses ever. Never mind Carrie. People should watch The Hustler to see how great she is.
@@Garsons-oq4lh Hmmm.
@@yvonneplant9434 Her live television performance in "Days of Wine and Roses" is also amazing- one of the best in that medium, I believe.
(born on January 22, 1932) is now 90 years old.. As of 2022, her acting career has spanned over 70 years. She is one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her and Clint Eastwood
Wow..no idea!
I will never forget her lines in Carrie. "I can see your dirty pillows....everyone will!" "They're all gonna laugh at you!" She was so good in that role.
See my comment regarding her ad-lib moment. ❤️❤️❤️
@L S she played a good Nut !
“And the Raven was called sin.”
“First sin was intercourse. SAY IT!”
“Eve was weak. EVE WAS WEAK!
Say it, woman! SAY IT!!”
Piper brought her character to such dramatic and energetic power!
@@chrisfinch8637 look at her guest spot on Frasier, season 6, episode 20 called "Dr. Nora"! Her character on there took Margaret White, flipped the character on its ear, and cranked it up to 11!
"I pray you find Jesus!" Still one of my favorite lines just because of her delivery!
She is 90 years old!!!! So vibrant and sharp!! Such a light! ❤
She's so amazingly graceful and beautiful for an elderly woman. She's so something else ❤
Piper Laurie is a neglected national treasure, one of the most underrated leading ladies ever ...
I love Piper Laurie -- a highly underrated actress. Her "Margaret White" in the film Carrie is a cinematic classic.
Just re-watched Mississippi Gambler (1953) in which Piper had a major role and she was just 21 ! Unbelievably radiant and looked and sounded like she'd been acting forever.
Wonderful actress, rest in peace and thank you for your art.
This gal is 90!! She still has that strong, throaty voice, and all her marbles! One of the great actresses who has been underappreciated.
Piper Laurie is so magnificent and inspirational to this 74yr old Filipina who has been watching her in movies since the 1950's.
She's still got it and really liked her acting, I'm glad I stumbled on this interview.
She's the QUEEN. 👑❤️ I LOVED that she ad-libbed the post-prom story about Carrie's dad in "Carrie." BRILLIANT.
She was phenomenal in Carrie. I can watch just her scenes and she sends shivers down my spine (not to mention Sissy's performance.
I've said this for years, if you don't like Piper Laurie, there's something wrong with you.
Piper Laurie is excellent in everything she has done. The interviewer did a wonderful job.
I loved her in Tim with Mel Gibson, such a lovely lady and I think she should have won the Oscar for Carrie.
I saw Tim for the first time a few years ago. What a great film. I think everyone should see it
@@scottgauthier6537 Hello Scott just read your message and I absolutely agree with you that everyone should see this movie. Piper Laurie was brilliant in this and Mel Gibson was superb too. Robert 🏴
I love that movie! :)
amazing! What a voice she has. And great hosting by Dave Karger
I thought he was a wonderful interviewer. Ms. Laurie was a friend of my friend Jackie Hyde, who called her Rosetta. I met her at Jackie’s home one day and complimented her on her extraordinary performance in a TV production of Days of Wine and Roses by J.P Miller in which she starred with Cliff Robertson. Wonderful as the feature film was, it paled compared to Ms. Laurie’s version in my opinion. She was astonishing. She was so happy that I had seen it and very gracious. She told me that as a very young woman, one of her biggest acting idols was Claire Trevor. Years later, after she had made some films in LA, a few friends took her to a party and across the room stood Ms. Trevor. Piper’s friends urged her to introduce herself and tell her what a huge fan she was, but Piper was much too shy. Later that night, Piper felt a tap on her shoulder, and turned around to see her idol looking at her. She said, “Pardon me, aren’t you Piper Laurie?” Piper said, “Yes”. Ms. Trevor said, “How do you do. My name is Claire Trevor, and I just have to tell you, I think you’re one of the finest young actresses working in films today”.

@@Juliaflo Right!
Wonderful story! Thank you so much !
@@mckavitt13 Oh, thank you so much for reading and commenting! It’s one of my favorite stories. How thrilling it must have been for Piper to learn that her idol was a fan of hers! Life can be good. Even pretty magical, as in this case!
@@Daisnap Yes, absolutely charming! What a turn-around & delight!
Rest In Peace, Piper!
I had the honour of taking care of her publicity at the 1988 TIFF in Toronto for the film Tiger Warsaw with Patrick Swayze, she was the biggest star that year. I heard Hollywood stories from her and her wonderful friend and companion. I still remember sitting in the back of a limo on our way to a press conference when she warned me about drinking too much cheap champagne and that she learned her lesson very early in her career. We had just finished an interview with Brian Linehan at the Park Plaza and were walking toward the elevator when she saw Brian de Palma I was in between them and they hadn't seen each other since Carrie ....everyone just watched them. This brought back some beautiful memories so happy to see her still so gracious and beautiful Thank you
Thanks Alannah for sharing your treasured memories of Piper Laurie in 1988. I had forgotten Brian Linehan and happy that you've refreshed my memory. Brian was a wonderful interviewer who researched in depth his guests history and achievements.
The look on her face when she’s getting ready to kill Carrie was creepy as hell! Such a great actress!
Psychotic Deludinoid!!
Wonderful actress. One of the few left of that extraordinary generation of actors.
She has a wonderful voice!! Very distinctive!
I think Piper Laurie had her greatest dramatic role with Paul Newman in the Hustler...!
Totally agree - she was amazing in that.
Thank you for posting this video of the lovely Miss Laurie. It’s impossible to believe she is 90 years old. 👏🎭
WOW...
For all of us who wanted to attend the TCMFF but couldn't, thank you for putting some of these great interviews on you tube!!
Agreed ! I've attended all of their in-person festivals except one. Wish I could have made it this year, but this may be the next best thing !
I remember as a little girl in the fifties having Piper Laurie paper dolls. She was a huge starlet back then and very popular. If you were an actress and had paper dolls in your likeness you know you had it made. I remember I had Barbara Rush, June Allyson, Liz Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, Betty Hutton and a couple of others, and Piper was among them all. I always liked her very much.
I found a treasure on eBay year’s ago- Piper Laurie Coloring Book.
What a life!
@@davidobrien4559 That's great. She was HUGE and I was a big fan at the age of 5.
I love all her films and I am especially fascinated by her mannerisms in her work, she is very unique. To my generation she will always be the iconic Margret White that she played so sublimely. she should have received the Oscar for that performance.
“You’re a woman now!” “Eve was weak! Say it, woman.” And “I can see your dirty pillows. Everyone will.” Are the UNFORGETTABLE lines by Laurie. cannot believe you are 90, Ms. Laurie!!! You are a star!!!!
91
@@Garsons-oq4lh Thanks!
What a beautiful laugh! It just makes you so happy! Such a lovely voice, so humble, so fun! Love this; love her! Thank you!!!
Rest in Peace Piper❤
Piper Laurie is wonderful! And Dave Karger is such a great interviewer... well-prepared and drawing the best out of his guests.
…. Dave Karger has vastly improved. He was lucky to have his training while on the air at TCM. I remember him three or four years ago and he was horrible.
At least he paid Piper Laurie the awe, respect, and gratitude that she deserves for the work that she has done and for the woman that she is.
My introduction to Piper Laurie was the Stephen King adaptation Carrie. Chemistry between her and Sissy Spacek was off the charts. One of my favorite Stephen King horror movies and the first to come out. The second time I saw her was her later years in an episode of Law and Order Special Victims Unit where she played an abusive foster mother to three black children. She is great at playing villains. A living Legend. 👏🏾🎭
What a wonderful actress and woman. So genuine and graceful.
A month ago I adopted this timid, vulnerable, smart, beautiful puppy from the pound, and I named her Piper, after Piper Laurie from The Hustler. I loved her in that movie.
DUDE PIPER LAURIE IS LEGEND🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fosho👌🏾
@@jimmyo1123 Dude! Remember Dream a Little Dream ('90)? Piper Rocks in that Flix! ♥️
Oh yea def!!
Rest in peace Piper.
She's a lovely and very talented actress in a time of really excellent films were written in Hollywood, not the same for many reasons. GOD BLESS YOU PIPER, 🙌 🙏 I THINK ROSETTA IS A LOVELY NAME
Rest in peace, Dame Laurie! You were film and TV royalty, and the loving memory of you will live on for as long as we, your admirers, are around. Thank you for everything! ❤
What a wonderful lady and actress, really beautiful💫
I love to see a woman " of an age " dressed as she is- Piper Laurie is still so pretty and engaging, an overlooked actress real film buffs know and admire. I love that style of hat and I applaud Ms. Laurie for wearing one with confidence!
Much deserving of respect and admiration. Wishing Rosetta many more years of good health and happiness.
Thanks to TCM for posting this, much appreciated! I saw the wonderful Ms. Laurie interviewed briefly yesterday prior to "The Hustler" screening and really wanted to check out this longer discussion, but I didn't make it up to the festival today.
It was so very delightful to finally enjoy this wonderful woman. She was one of my parents favorites as an actress and I remember going to the drive ins as a child. We got the cartoons and they got the movie. I did sneak and watched though and have seen many movies with Piper Laurie. So many memories. This thoroughly enjoyed this walk back in time and seeing a truly fulfilled and inspirational human being, being human. She is definitely believable and extremely a lady! Thank you so very much for sharing with us all again!❤️🕊🍀🌈😇🙏❣️
She’s wonderful!! Absolutely gem and so so charming.
She's AWESOME. She did some TV too, namely Law&Order SVU. ALWAYS brilliant. 👍❤️
I love piper laurie especially when she was in Carrie a beautiful talented actress
RIP Piper Laurie ❤
I love her she's such a great actress
Dave Karger does a great job here. Piper Laurie is totally at ease and enchanting. My favorite performances are the TV Days of Wine and Roses and her extraordinary realness in Tim with Mel Gibson. A great artist.
I enjoyed Ms. Laurie immensely. Carger (billed as a major film historian and co-host for TCM) was unaware of 3 of her interesting films. Poor preparation by he & his staff. But wonderful to hear Ms. Laurie share her memories.
Hard to believe by watching Carrie that she was so shy that she didn't speak. The role was unbelievable.
somehow despite Carrie 1976 being almost half a century ago, Piper Laurie still sounds a lot like Margaret did in that movie
As an older adult she was the most humble "Move Star" I have ever met. Talented and quiet -- but intense.
I just watched her in the film Dream a Little Dream (1989) and thinking about her and Harry Dean Stanton. They certainly had star charisma.
But the movie made me sad watching Corey Haim. He was amazing in Lost Boys but his life was tragic due to his addictions. The recent sudden death of Mathew Perry triggered these thoughts and how they both began in the biz very young. RIP to them all. They gave us pleasure in escaping reality through movies and TV. Glad the old times were able to live long full lives.
She’s still so damn sharp. Love ❤️ her!!
Brilliant actress, lovely lady. She was fantastic in 'Carrie' 💜
Wonderful! Great conversation with Ms. Laurie.
She was EXCELLENT !! She was also GREAT on Will & Grace very funny. And in Carrie - Her monologue at the end pre & post prom scenes. She is way past words that I can use to describe her WOW ! I have always loved her . ❤ R.I.P.
Rest in peace Piper Laurie. Her performance in The Hustler is the most heartbreaking performance by an actor in any movie I've ever seen. Can't think of it without welling up. Incredible talent.
I can't believe she was 90 years old. Carrie is one of my favorite movies, thanks to Laurie, Spacek and de Palma, and the Donaggio (for the music).
Loved watching the interview. Very interesting hearing Hollywood stories.
Excelente actriz, me encanto el film que protagonizo junto al actor Mel Gibson TIM; de 1979!.. Felicitaciones!! saludos desde Arg, Sra Luarie!!
she was only 43 when she played Carries mother. Many actresses that age now would be too vain to play such a role
She is the same age as my late mom.God bless Piper! She looks great!❤️
Met Ms Piper Laurie In 1998. I Was A Movie Extra. We Were On A City Bus Doing A Scene. Very Hot Day I Remember. I Said Hi To Her. Her Hair Was Really Red.
PS and the interviewer was quite charming as well. and knows how to interview, which is no small feat.
He is a very good moderator. Knowledgeable, gracious and quick on his feet. Not a very easy skill to master.
Such a great actress and beautiful lady. I love her name Piper.
Rest In Peace Piper Laurie. You were a good actress
I remember her from various tv shows in the '60s and thought she was quite pretty. And I too, believe she was underrated as an actress.
She is still attractive aty ninety ,and she has a beautiful speaking voice.❤
One of my favorite old movies is “Louisa” and she plays the daughter. From 1950.
Go with God, Piper.
Thanks for the memories. 💔
I think she was awesome in "Carrie". Great actress 👏
Omg. Always loved her, but she's so sassy, I love her more!
She was in one of the greatest films in history….The Hustler. Such a sad character who wanted to just be loved and wanted.
She should have won the Oscar. She gave an unforgettable performance.
Terrific interview by Dave Karger. The lost art of letting the guest speak.
I recently watched her in The Thornbirds. She played her character with so much charm and wit.
So good to hear her talking,,very interesting person and so lovely.
Rest in peace Piper Laurie
Glad to see the audience are all laughing with her and not at her.
Piper Laurie was such a treasure. May she rest in peace ❤
I can't waste time for a 49 minute video, so I'll just say this: Piper's performance in Carrie was beyond awesome. She should have won an Oscar for it.
So lovely to see this, she is an amazing actor and woman...The man interviewing Piper is great, the questions, the knowledge of her career and his genuine warm company... does anyone know who he is?
She was great in “Until They Sail” and should have had more good films like that.Rock Hudson considered her “a very good actress”.
As much as she's not a fan of the Oscars she was cheated on winning the Oscar for "Carrie."
I know right!
Horror film didn't garnish oscars. back then. Same for Sissy but they corrected hers the next year.
RIP Piper Laurie. Sad to hear this.
What a class act! :)
Thanks so much for this! 💎 #TurnerClassicMovies #TCMFF2022 #PiperLaurie #RIPPiperLaurie #PiperLaurieRIP
I love her so much. Such a great actress.
She was a kind and loving Aunt Em in Return to Oz.
Shes awesome
God bless her soul and her
It's interesting that audience members seem to only know "Carrie" as an over-the-top, laugh-filled experience with memorably funny lines and characterizations. That's unfortunate. It was taken seriously as a fright fest in its original release.
Most definitely.
I find that reaction not interesting but appalling and chalk it up to the sheer daftness of Generation Y (why?) and younger... "Carrie" is a brilliant important film--horror and otherwise. I have always said it should be shown in junior high as the definitive antidote to bullying.
That's probably because they're too scared to admit that movie scared the 💩 out of them.
It didn't scare me when I saw it as a kid. I was the kid who was bullied so those early scenes often made me cry but the prom scene always had me going "Get them! Burn them all!!!"
I don’t think that’s totally the fault of the public. It can be attributed to the success of the film as iconic, combined with Brian De Palma’s style. CARRIE like many of his films has a dreamlike quality to it. A lot of it seems to exist in this fuzzy dream world, beginning with that classic opening sequence (which could never be done today) and that Hitchcock style of double focus he uses, and he also mixes in a tone that sometimes almost feels like it could border on an overwrought, too tender ABC AfterSchool Special (such as scenes with the fantastic Betty Buckley as Miss Collins as well as some interactions with Tommy, and some of the pre-telekinesis prom moments). This was all on purpose. De Palma mixes up tones and to slightly disorient the audience. Throughout much of the film you’re not entirely sure what kind of movie you’re watching, and the softer and slightly exaggerated campy scenes makes the horror of Carrie’s revenge at prom feel that much more horrifying. And I’m not even getting into the intense color palette of the cinematography AND Pino Donaggio’s amazingly dreamy/nightmarish score.
So I think what happens is within this weird slightly otherworldly feeling, it is rightfully terrifying and dramatic but out of context, just quoting lines and such, it can seem over the top.
Lovely interview! 🌹🌹
Always loved her. This just happened to come up in my recommendations. I had previously missed it somehow. I love these interviews. And now, sadly, I just realized that she passed away a few days ago. She was magnificent and scary in "Carrie," devastating in "The Hustler," and the original golden age of tv producton of "Days of Wine and Roses." A great actress, I wish we had more of her on film.
