I was instantly reminded of a story my dad told me. He said his aunt was always prepared for company. It seemed she always "knew" when company was coming. There would always without fail be a fresh baked pie, even if someone dropped in on her. He said he was curious how she managed this. Now I totally know her secret, she lived everyday this way as a formal affair. She made pie, probably for tea time everyday and was always using her best, and if someone stopped by they actually felt she had brought out her best things for them. Such a lovely revelation.
My mother lived in a senior apartment building for the last 20 years of her life and this building had a daily luncheon service. The service put everything on disposable plates and used plastic cutlery. My mother would bring her own dishes and transfer her food onto real plates; she brought her own silverware, a placemat, a coffee cup, and cloth napkin. Others in the dining room would marvel at her habit of doing this. She really elevated this mundane luncheon service to a classier and more formal affair. Oh yes, and she was always immaculately dressed.
“Curating” is the word I keep in my mind as I declutter. I focus on just keeping the very best (not the most expensive, but the loveliest/happiest/most useful).
Hi Jennifer. I’ve been enjoying your channel for several years now. I really started incorporating your IF and homemaking tips over the last year, and then I was diagnosed with cancer. I’ve continued to watch your videos through my treatments over the last five months. I’ve had to move for treatment, and I’ve not been in my home with my husband and kids since they began. Watching your videos has made me feel like I’m home, in a beautiful place instead of a hospital; and has helped me to look forward to when my family and I are all together again under one roof. Praise God, I finished chemo yesterday and had a clear scan! I can’t wait to get back home with my family and continue the art of homemaking with them. Thank you for putting some joy in my life with your videos during this time.
I learned to live a formal life from my mother. She, and her home, are always pulled together, even today at age 90. We were recently at her doctor's appointment and each person who entered the room from the nurses to the doctor said "you ladies are so fancy!" or dressed up or some other statement like that. We were wearing simple black pants and tops, and a gold chain for her and silver for me. This, apparently, made us fancy:) People are so used to the casualness of our society now, that adding jewelry to a basic outfit elevates the entire look. I love all of your ideas. Thank you!
I relate to your experience. The women in my family have always been formal (and always on a budget). I always wear dresses and hats. People tend stare when I'm out and one day someone said that I look like I'm going to a tea party. My response was "thank you". 😅
I recently traveled across the country by plane. I deliberately dressed in a dress with my pearls. It changed how people reacted to me and I enjoyed my trip so much more. I wasn’t trying to “put on airs” just wanted to a little more “classy “.
Yes, I found that when we flew out of town earlier this year, someone said that I was on the first flight with them; when asked how they knew, he mentioned my beret and my Ralph Lauren vest. 😊 Just wearing my daily outfit. Thanks for encouraging this, Jennifer. Julie 🌷
My mother was putting together an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her Parish. She and the other lady organising it went hunting the op shops and gumtree (like craigs list) and found candelabras and crystal and everything for an elegant evening. The organised the food also. Tables, table cloths, everything was perfection! The rave reviews made everyone realise how starved for elegance and effort we are! She was so proud of what they achieved and the bar is now set very high.
This needs to be a series, Jennifer.🥰💄💐 Most people must watch their budget these days, and with inflation, it is necessary to be intentional about using our imagination to be a "daily connoisseur" of poise, class, beauty, formality, excellence, etc. As well, I truly believe these concepts and ways of living are for everyone. If everyone treated themselves and everyone around them like they are royalty, deserving of the best they have access to, the world would be a much better place.♥️🇨🇦
I watch another channel - Garden Answers - and she talked about how her mother always had fresh flowers on the table and set the table for dinner every night. Her mom called it “romancing the ordinary.” I love that phrase! It reminds me of you and your channel.
I enjoyed this immensely, thank you Jennifer. I generally do these things, but it always helps to be reminded and see how like-minded people do it. This morning I let the kids light the candles on the table, set by the fresh bouquet I picked yesterday, put on my “tea party” playlist of classical & Celtic music, and we enjoyed our French press coffee with a homemade, healthy, banana-walnut- oatmeal cake for breakfast. Cloth napkins, real plates, -oh and I put on a nice outfit with earrings (as usual). My son asked me, “Are you going somewhere?” 😄 I have all boys, but I hope they will remember these little touches of dignity and simple, gracious living despite not being wealthy. We live in a small house in a take-out kinda neighborhood, but you are so right, it doesn’t take much money at all to elevate life into something beautiful, joyous and peaceful.
Much of living a formal life is who you are as a person. Dress, speech, your de-cluttered environment, and most especially your thoughts are under our control. Really, it’s about what’s in your head and your actions gravitate towards your thoughts. This channel clearly gives the practical steps. Thanks Jennifer!!💖🥰💐
This was excellent! I am actually dressed up a bit to go to Home Depot and it never fails to elevate my mood. Your tips focus on our senses. A very old decor book I have recommends having something interactive set up....think chess board, jigsaw puzzle on a pretty table, nuts to crack with nutcracker, a coffee station, a recent photo album to peruse, even an open piano with simple music, to serve as an invitation to participate. Using my favorite perfume makes me feel formal too.
You are right, it's a mindset. I went back to my bedroom and change my tee-shirt loose dress for a fitting skirt and a nice tee, redid my hair, put my rings and earrings on and a dash of my favorite perfume. Husband's reaction: where are you going? Me, nowhere. Reply: works for me ;-) Works for me too! (I'll keep the dress for super hot days when I need to work in the backyard though ahah)
I owe you gratitude for wearing more dresses, drinking out of my good china cups daily, and hosting more dinner parties. Thank you for the ideas and encouragement. Everyday is special!
Jennifer, I appreciate all your videos tut I see by the comments this video is especially helpful these days as people have become too casual. I’ve always dressed my best every day and feel better about myself. I’ve become a bit “lax” in my keeping my home decluttered. My husband died suddenly three years ago, and it’s easy to ignore some things like keeping things tidy. I often hosted tea luncheons for friends and my husband and I always enjoyed having friends come over to our house for dinner. I’ve gotten away from that with being alone and going through “Covid” the past couple years. I am presently undergoing radiation for treatment of breast cancer which is limiting my time and energy level, but after I’m finished in two weeks and my energy level returns, I’m going to try to host more gatherings at my home. You are very inspirational for women of all ages. Thank you for your suggestions and encouragement. God’s Blessings…
I used to be the queen of saving things for the special days that never came . In 2019 I stop and wow honestly life easier on this side 😀 . I was traveling recently and honestly people were helping me none stop. I didn’t touch my luggage for 9 hours straight people kept asking if they can help and I just say thank you thank you . Until I arrived and my husband was waiting for me . I honestly think is because I didn’t travel in gym clothes.
If someone mentions the change in your life you could always respond “I want to give you the respect you deserve by bringing my best.” I’d be honored to hear that.
I agree with you, I try to live more elegant life on daily basis. Today I arrived to summer house and even though it is definitely not pintrest worthy I put a vase with fresh flower that I picked from the garden and it makes such a different!
Hi, Jennifer. I love the part about dressing up, and I think it's worth mentioning that it's a real blessing and compliment to our husbands that we care how we look at home, for them, and not just when we're dressing to go out and impress others.
I bought the Victoria magazine that you were featured in and since have ordered a subscription. I definitely feel elevated when I read that magazine. I had been in a bad routine of ordering magazine subscriptions and then not reading them. So when I set up my new routines upon turning 70 years old in addition to reading a chapter a day from a nonfiction book and a fiction book I also read an article from my magazine. If I am actually reading them I don’t feel like I am wasting money buying magazines. Thanks for all your encouragement over the years.
I have book club once a month. I set the table with table cloth, cloth napkins, water and wine glasses and the good dishes. Everyone feels so special. I encourage them to do this for themselves too
Hi Jennifer I've been following you since your first book. I live in Palermo, Italy, my daughter is in her 5th year of violin study and she is part of the youth orchestra of our majestic Palermo Opera Theater. I find when she practices violin at home my house feels like the queen 's house. Take care and come visit italy ❤️
I was taught to buy the best you can afford always and, literally, to put your best foot forward. There were times, growing up, when my mother made me change clothes into something better before I could leave the house. I had gotten away from that. Thank you, Jennifer, for reminding me.
We have friends from Europe and we have been in each other’s homes. They have fewer possessions than we have but generally over all I would say they have better quality. I think of that before making important purchases.
I love your books and channel. I overslept one morning and went to work in "my work at home clothes" I felt so uncomfortable in the office all day. I didn't realise until then how comfortable in my formal clothes I felt. I feel ready for anything - unexpected meeting or spontaneous night out etcetera in my formal clothes. This was a huge shock to me as I thought I was the queen of casual. As a teenager I only wore my brothers hoodies with my jeans and runners (sneakers/trainers). Now I have a wardrobe full of dresses and cardigans. The teenager version of me would not recognise me now = Ms Chic.
I dress up nearly everyday. My initial excuse was I was dressing professionally for my music students, but really I was just sick of uncomfortable jeans and slobby outfits. I felt uncomfortable at the grocery store at first, but I always got compliments. After a while I realized I was treated with more respect as well.
My mother taught me to set a table properly and I have been doing this for the past 35 years and wouldn't have it any other way. Its the little things that really improve our lives.
Dressing nicer has definitely helped build my confidence. To the point that I'm phasing out most of my casual clothes to the bare minimum. More confidence, less clutter. I'm feeling great these days.
I’m in the process of a major declutter of my stuff. Just filled up my car and brought boxes 📦 to The Salvation Army. I have an extensive music library and I am donating a large quantity to our local university. Coming up July 21 I have an appointment with a resale shop to give away fall and winter items. It’s a great 😊 feeling.
This kind of content never gets old! I value the reminders of where I could be doing better, and the satisfying confirmation of the areas in which I've been doing well. I love the "on a budget" emphasis, because that's how I've built my home lifestyle as a young wife. Thank you, Jennifer!
Jennifer, here's a Feng shui tip that I hope you'll consider concerning your dining room plants. Whenever you place a plant on the floor always elevate it with some kind of plant stand or beautiful planter. This is a sign of respect since anything put directly on the floor can be seen as unfinished or disrespectful. Also, it moves the energy upwards which is always positive. 🕉 ❤️ 🪴
Your video came at a perfect time. I did all five tips this week. I constantly have classical music playing at home-it really feels like I entered royalty when I listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc. 🎵Because of guests for afternoon tea, I set the table and wore an elegant summer top and skirt ensemble. With the prospect of moving to a smaller house in the near future (my only child is in college), I cleared clutter from top to bottom in preparation for a visit from a young couple who is interested in our house. Yes, I love reading proper books. In fact, I was at the library this morning. I am going to read How the World Really Works by Vaclav Smil after work today. 📚 BTW, I just had your delicious coconut ricotta pudding garnished with berries for my afternoon tea today. 🍓🫐☕️
Thank you for the reminders! There is a book that I keep nearby and return to read. Creating a Charmed Life by Victoria Moran. It is a daily read of short tips to keep it real! We all need a little push to do our best. A few years ago when we were painting our kitchen, I ran out quickly for sub sandwiches for a quick, easy lunch. I had on the paint clothes, no makeup, had not even brushed my teeth that morning! Well, guess who stood directly behind me in line while waiting for our sandwiches? You guessed it, my Administrator! He carried on a conversation with me and probably didn't care or notice my appearance. But I told myself that day, I will never leave the house without basic hygiene and at least some minimal makeup! And to this day, I still live by that rule!
Thank you Jennifer for being you and all the amazing videos you put out. You know the secret to a peace filled joy filled life. I'm so impressed with you, you are such a breath of fresh air!! I'm 58 yrs old and so LOVE your content, I wish all young mothers could be like you. There would be less violence homelessness and misery plaguing our world. Keep making the world a better place😀💜 I pray for you thankful for young ppl like you! God bless you and your beautiful family🙏👏🏼💜 sending you a virtual hug!
“How to be a Hepburn in a Hilton World” by Jordan Christy. Just started reading it. Seems like it’s for the younger generation but I’m looking forward to seeing all she has to say. I’m sure my generation needs to read it too, though!
Yes, oh one thing I definitely need to work on is decluttering. I have slowly transformed our little rental unit into something I feel happy to use and to share if we have people over. But get sick and that's weeks of things randomly sitting on our dining table! And thank you, you know that negativity experienced in elevating your space is something I've encountered over the years with dressing. I love dressing well, and it can be mind boggling as to just how passive aggressive some may be. I once had a friend in my 20s insist I should just dress casually in trackpants to see how I feel. I think she thought I was dressing nicely to prove something. Lol! And I did try just wearing trackpants just for her 😅and my report back was that I didn't feel my good self, you know?🤔When I look back I realise it wasn't my insecurities, it was hers perhaps. It's those little lovely touches that bring joy to those small moments. I learnt from aunts who learnt from aunts to put your best foot forward and I love all that, which is why I embraced it...even though we do live in a very casual society these days. Lots of food for thought again, Jennifer! Thanks for reminding me of all the lovely little things that make the everyday that bit special! 💕
"Formal" gives me the instant feelings of stiffness & stuffiness, not comfortable or cozy or warm & inviting. I really like using the words "elevated" or "uplifting" to describe my space.
Me too. And kind of "trying too hard". There's a fine line between warm and inviting and having guests perching on the edge of the couch for fear of crushing the carefully smoothed and placed cushion. And those stiff, spiky, perfectly fanned flower arrangements in oasis. I had an ex with a mother like that, she was such a try-hard, condescending name-dropper too. It all felt so stilted.
Patrick Bernhardt is a musician whose music people say has healing qualities. It is new age/spa ambient. Aldi has wonderful 3 wick candles for around $5 everyday. It's not always about the money!! Hermann Hesse novels tend to be short in length, but beautifully written prose.
Thank you Jennifer for delivering this much needed message. I use to be an avid reader and lately (exhaustion from running our business) I noticed I have been mindlessly watching television. Only to be unsettled when I sleep. I noticed it was because of what I was watching. This video gave me the conviction needed to get back into reading the books I have been wanting to read. 🤓
This was such a great video to watch. I actually chose a dress that is flattering and lovely to wear today, for no other reason than it is flattering and lovely. I haven't worn it in a long time, and after watching this video, I'm glad i did. 😊 Thank you for such great content, Jennifer! 🌷❤️
This is where we find the beauty in life, in the details! Thanks for spreading this concept, we all need a little reminder to upgrade from time to time!
On the topic of using music to give a more formal atmosphere: I recently started playing playlists of music from my favorite classic movies. My all time favorite movie is Anne of Green Gables (1985 with Megan Follows) and the playlist always makes my day so much more dreamy and enjoyable! I also enjoy the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack a lot!
@@Julia29853 I used Spotify, I typed in "Anne of Green Gables" and immediately got a playlist someone had made and also the actual soundtrack. ❤️ Also, I fully agree that it's an escape to a sweeter time!
Paper clutter is a problem in modern life. My mail comes into my garage and I process it right there, throwing 90% into the recycling bin. Only the 10% or so that I actually have to deal with, like bills, goes the next step into my office.
I definitely feel more motivated and put together when I change out of my gym shorts and tshirt into a long linen sundress and light cardigan! It makes me want to sit with better posture and behave more gently as well. I’m still young so I’m hoping that all of the things you have mentioned in this video will become habitual for me as I grow older☺️
I love these videos. They are so inspiring! I burn my nice candles and play classical music and everyone says my home is so peaceful.. Thanks to you, i dress up everyday.. nice dress, simple makeup, jewelry and perfume..today, coming out of the post office i ran into a woman i worked with 20 years ago. We chatted for a few minutes and i was soo happy i was dressed presentable.
I really enjoyed this video and I needed these reminders. How you dress really affects how you feel about yourself. In the 90s I had a job where we had to wear suits everyday (skirts only no trousers for women). I never felt more capable and powerful as I did in my suit and heels. I spend most of my time at home these days but I know I would feel better if I upgraded my attire and my table setting on a daily basis. Even a t-shirt dress with earrings would make me happier at this point. Thanks much!
Timely video! Currently in the process of minor remodel which will result in a major aesthetic! Also requires me to declutter! On budget but, oh my goodness, how did I accumulate all this *stuff?!* Still must dress for comfort due to health issues but focused on what I can do; not negatives! Asked Alexa to play Classical music upon your suggestion as soon as you finished your sentence 👍 Off to PT (physical therapy) with lots to think about 💕
Just discovered this most conscious, beautiful woman. Your subjects are those I've missed and craved in social awareness for as long as they've been abandoned. Thank you for inspiring me to continue what's been kept, and to start something new. Amazing, appreciated, wise in every way. These are the real secrets to living, 'hiding in plain sight.'
Absolutely love these tips Jennifer💖. I love being intentional about cultivating more formal habits and elegance within my home ❤️. Thanks for sharing!
Wherever you are, be all there. Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God. ~Jim Elliot I don't think of myself as "formal" but I do like the idea of living fully and richly. I appreciate your wisdom, Jennifer.
I make tea every morning for my son, coffee for me, with milk. I light a candle, put classical music on UA-cam on my phone. My son is 6,5 years old. He is very hyperactive but he sits straight when I straighten myself up in the chair, he stirs the spoon in the cup in 12-6 o’clock motion and he excuses himself from the table with “may I be excused?” I dress him in a shirt and myself in a dress everyday. (He used to hate it, now he’s okay with it). We both wear hats outside. Always. Of course he would love to wear t-shirts with pictures and advertisements for Disney like so many of his friends. I do allow them when he goes to play in the garden, for sports or when he goes to bed. But by now he knows that when he wants to walk in town with me he has to be presentable, and so must be I. I’ve been on this journal for a couple of years now, thanks to Jennifer (and other elegant ladies) and I must say that although I come from Europe where the culture has not been so dumbed down yet, the society has also became increasingly more casual than let’s say 20/30 years ago. When we go out now, we also get compliments regularly on every single outing (my son especially as people are not used to see kids dressed formally anymore). We are by no means over the top - it’s just that the “leggings-society” isn’t used to see a normally formally dressed person anymore. 🤷🏼♀️ I will love to connect with all of you beautiful elegant ladies from around the world, if you wish, please let’s connect together on IG. I’m at kristina_anna_elizabeth and I will love to see your pictures, how you dress and how you decorate your home (that’s what I share a lot in my pictures there). I wish a beautiful day to everybody and thank you Jennifer for your books and videos. 🌷
Couldn’t agree more about reading! 📚 I’ve been working my way through the novels of Thomas Hardy this year and it really is the most enriching downtime. Mindlessly channel surfing does nothing to relax me or increase my wellbeing - quite the opposite! x
I have been binge watching you most of today as I get the chores done, and then this video pops up, what a treat!. Something that I love to do is to make useful things beautiful, not just a set of repulsive plastic measuring cups, but a beautiful ornate set for example. Of course doing this often requires saving that bit extra for something more special. Investing in ourselves and our homes does take time, but it is so worth it. Also I purchased the lost art of dress after seeing you read it, so far I am loving it.
This positive reinforcement for me as often as you post, is so key to my daily habits. And great for my husband to hear it from someone else too! You say things in love your delivery is delightful. We strive to live this way and accomplish it most of the time and yet I never tire of hearing it daily or as often as I can listen! You posting as often as you do is everything! Thankyou so much! You are an encouragement strengthening my resolve❤️
I love all your tips! I’ve started doing all these things since I read your books and watched your channel. My life feels upgraded one thousand percent! It has impacted the way I see myself and the ways I show up in the world. I never would have guessed that these “little things” were in fact, so foundational. I love feeling so effortlessly elegant every single day and the people around me definitely see and feel the change. I can’t imagine going back to my less-formal old ways. Thank you dear Jennifer. 💐
Thank you for writing this. 💖💖💖 It motivates and inspires me to delve into this subject more- homemaking - & enjoy it as an art and self expression. Thank you for posting! It encouraged me. 🥰🥰🥰💖💖
Thrift stores are full of beautiful China, crystal and linens. It's not unusual to find Spode, Wedgewood, Limoges, etc. Since we live in such an informal world, these items are some of the most donated items to thrift stores. I recently found an entire set (including tea set and serving pieces) of Churchhill Blue Willow for $15!
I agree. I have found many serving pieces still in the box. I see a lot of sliver plate and Waterford. Are people getting items from their wedding and thinking ' When would I even use something so fancy? ' Is it just that people do not want items that can't be tossed in the dishwasher?
Thank you, Jennifer, for this lovely video. So inspiring. I have a very busy life, farm, homeschooling, home business, elder parents to look after, and I used to have a career as a scientist! Anyway, I love my full life but tend to be 'practical' and cut corners when it comes to the little things like a table cloth, etc. I have so many beautiful dishes in the hutch from my mother but only use my 'everyday' ones. You have totally inspired me to bring back the beauty into our home, even if it means a bit more effort, and use those beautiful dishes, the tablecloths, napkins, etc. You have taught me that everyday should be a celebration! Thank you and God Bless♥
I love this topic! I eliminated TV about 6 years ago. I get my news on the computer once a day. I now have much more time for reading and being more productive. What a difference! As for decluttering, it makes for quick weekly cleaning of the house, a calmer vibe and less anxiety.
I never watched TV and at age 63, never miss it. I bought a new TV about five years ago, feeling I should try to connect more with the world, but never bothered to plug it in. So, I gave it away to a recent immigrant who had nothing and he was very grateful, it made us both happy. I can’t stand how it’s on in every public place now.
Began dressing more formally in my everyday life about a year and a half ago. I used to just go run my errands in a casual jeans and T-shirt, thinking that anything more formal than that would be viewed as weird or like I thought too highly of myself. It's hard to look around you, see that everyone is wearing what I refer to as "depression chic", and not feel obliged to follow suit. But dressing nicely has been one of the ways that I kept myself from staying in negative and depressive mindsets. It goes along with eating the right way and getting sleep and excersise.
After watching a video you made (my first time watching your channel) about formal table settings I bought a carafe for the first time ever (nearly 60yo) and I put lemon slices and water in it. I love how it looks on my table and I'm drinking much more water now. Thank you for your videos.
Jennifer This was a wonderful video ! And very much needed as a lot of us may think you need to have a lot of money to live more elevated life style - but there you are sharing these simple tips ! Thank you so much ! And yes - we are out there - we who still pickup the actual book to read :-) thank you and you got me laughing at the pantry moment !
Just bought my first audio Madame Chic book, looking forward to listening to it while traveling this week. Your video really made me think about the things we store away for that special occasion, and in doing so we suppress some of life's little joys. I'm inspired to change that now, thank you!
@@ljbw735 That's so strange you cannot find it. It is the Lessons from Madame Chic that I currently have in my Audible library, narrated by Amy Rubinate.
My husband is a fabulous cook and I'm the dishwasher. Recently, I started setting the table with our very best china and glassware, even though I have to wash it by hand. (I know, it's two plates!). We have no heirs and are in our late 60s. This IS our best life. During COVID, I became much more aware of making each day an event. I went so far as pretending my home was a hotel. I made it a habit to put a lemongrass scent into the atomizer after loading the breakfast dishes and we play music during the day and dinner. Every morning I have my cappuccino in a mug I bought during a trip to England. It honors the Queen's Jubilee (we were in England just after she died). The mug wasn't expensive but I love the feel of the smooth china and the pretty colors. And then, finally, after years of your suggesting I write in a daily journal, I do, sitting outside on my lanai. It's made such a difference that sometimes my husband will ask, "Did you write in your gratitude journal today?"
I am in the process of downsizing and am part of a group doing the same. So many people are donating entire sets of fine china to thrift stores (not me!). Look there first if you want elegant dinnerware. Amazon also sells bone china sets for under $100 and prime days are July 12-13 this summer so I’m sure the deals will be even better.💕
I'm rewatching this video and totally agree that we should wear our nice things now. For me, sometimes I get stared at when I'm well dressed and people ask me why , or if I'm going out somewhere special.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I’m getting my life back together after a family crisis and this is just what I need. Going to dress up today and get back to living!
Quick note on the people who will say “Who do you think YOU are?” If someone snaps like this, they are more than likely jealous. It a sign that you are doing good in what you do! Don’t stop! Totally agree with you here.
This is when you just smile sweetly and say, "I think this is more about who you think YOU are". When you get the indignant, "What do you mean?" Just say, "Think about it."
After a bit of decluttering, I discovered 6 books I’ve held onto to read. My new goal is one a month until I’m done and they have been totally decluttered.
Thank you for your wonderful video! Living a more formal life is essential to creating and maintaining a serene existence, and your helpful tips (which are elegantly presented) are much appreciated!
I like this video Jennifer! Our world has changed so much that I don’t even recognize it anymore. I do use tablecloths, China, candles and try to look my best everyday. I also have been working on the clutter issues and rethinking the things I value most. (I’m not perfect in any of these areas, but it makes me feel happy) you are teaching us all to have a little more class and a purposeful life. Thanks to you I put more thought into what truly makes me happy.
Many years ago, I said I would not be one of those women who walked around the house in sweatpants and a T-SHIRT!!! Hence, my satin pajamas are STRICTLY for LOUNGING from after my morning shower until I change into my sleeping pajamas at night. It definitely elevates my mood.
For background music, I love jazz, easy listening from the ‘60s, and vintage bossa nova. Oh, and sometimes if my mood really needs a pick-me-up, something about ‘80s Japanese city pop just never fails to hit the spot.
I agree about using things now and not waiting! I really enjoyed this posting...Very good advice. I play music during the day... I don't dress up everyday because I am outside in the gardens most of my day.
Dear Jennifer, today I made your delicious Whole Wheat Stone Fruit Tart at my parents house. The neighbour had just gifted us some apricots from her garden, so after the tart was done I gave her a piece of the tart in return. Tonight we’re having your mango pudding dessert after dinner. Thank you for the delicious recipes as inspiration! Best wishes from the Netherlands! 😍
I took it up a notch today and wore a dress … definitely a mood booster. I felt ladylike and received a few compliments too! It’s worth the effort to live a little more formally!! Enjoyed the ideas you presented. Especially thinking today about sorting through my closets, clearing out the old and maybe even rediscovering something.
I absolutely adore you and your chanel. It isn’t only an inspiration for many of us but it is also an example for the whole “first world” as a sustainable way of life that is fun and conscious, and supports the fact of finding joy wonderful things that cost little or nothing and avoids consumerism.
This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
That is beautiful!
I love this.
What a beautiful way to live!
Truly a servant spirit but in the beautiful life of a Proverbs 31 lady.
I love this!
She sounds like my kind of lady! More power to her...
💖💖💖😊!
Wow. That’s commitment! I’m glad she continued to do this if it brought her joy.
What a Queen! ♥️
“Curating” is the word I keep in my mind as I declutter. I focus on just keeping the very best (not the most expensive, but the loveliest/happiest/most useful).
Yes, it is a key word!
Thank God! I’m so happy you get to go home. God bless you ♥️
Congratulations on your clear scan!! I’m so glad you found beauty in these videos to buoy your spirits.
Hazeloveu: Wishing you health and happiness from across the big pond. 🌷
Much love and strength to you! 🧡
💖🙏🙏🙏
I get odd looks at Walmart. Even if I am in jeans and a white shirt I have my jewelry on, hair neat, and usually perfume. I’m such a weirdo! 😅
I recently traveled across the country by plane. I deliberately dressed in a dress with my pearls. It changed how people reacted to me and I enjoyed my trip so much more. I wasn’t trying to “put on airs” just wanted to a little more “classy “.
I love that!❤️
Love it!
Wonderful! It makes a difference.
Yes, I found that when we flew out of town earlier this year, someone said that I was on the first flight with them; when asked how they knew, he mentioned my beret and my Ralph Lauren vest. 😊 Just wearing my daily outfit. Thanks for encouraging this, Jennifer. Julie 🌷
Great idea!
Love it!
Yes, I’m starved for elegance!
So I try to add it to my life myself.
This needs to be a series, Jennifer.🥰💄💐
Most people must watch their budget these days, and with inflation, it is necessary to be intentional about using our imagination to be a "daily connoisseur" of poise, class, beauty, formality, excellence, etc.
As well, I truly believe these concepts and ways of living are for everyone. If everyone treated themselves and everyone around them like they are royalty, deserving of the best they have access to, the world would be a much better place.♥️🇨🇦
Great idea!
I watch another channel - Garden Answers - and she talked about how her mother always had fresh flowers on the table and set the table for dinner every night. Her mom called it “romancing the ordinary.” I love that phrase! It reminds me of you and your channel.
I love Laura’s channel ♥️
Hello from a fellow GA fan! 😊🌺
@harpo, what a beautiful soul you are!! 💖💖
So true!
So true, it's who we are
Love this! It’s so true.
Love this. So true
I started living a more formal life (on a budget) because of you,Jennifer. My family noticed. That makes me happy.
Thank you,Jennifer!
Wonderful!
It takes one special some1 to change our lives .
Enjoy 😉
This was excellent! I am actually dressed up a bit to go to Home Depot and it never fails to elevate my mood. Your tips focus on our senses. A very old decor book I have recommends having something interactive set up....think chess board, jigsaw puzzle on a pretty table, nuts to crack with nutcracker, a coffee station, a recent photo album to peruse, even an open piano with simple music, to serve as an invitation to participate. Using my favorite perfume makes me feel formal too.
That's a great tip! And we are learning to play chess too so very timely.
Love this! I always have a jigsaw puzzle set up and it makes me so happy.
I would love to know the name of the
book❤️
Life is less expensive.
High quality items last.
Maintenance makes contentment.
Children learn valuable life skills.
Thank you #LadyJennifer 💞
Yes, indeed!
I loved this but I would add absolutely no foul language in my home. This practice is free and elevating.
I feel the same way when my children practice the piano!
@@TheDailyConnoisseur Jennifer, the other day I was wondering if you are still able to play, yourself...? I remember you were awhile back.
I do, too, and get compliments every day, out of self-esteem🙂
My mother taught me to set a table properly and I have been doing this for the past 35 years and wouldn't have it any other way. Its the little things that really improve our lives.
I love to read. I read 162 books last year.
That’s great! What kind of books do you like to read?
@@djlivvy46 Mostly mysteries.
Dressing nicer has definitely helped build my confidence. To the point that I'm phasing out most of my casual clothes to the bare minimum. More confidence, less clutter. I'm feeling great these days.
Thank you. I so look forward to your videos. And we need to live life on a budget these days lol.
Keep the videos coming. They are very timely and refreshing. One does not have to spend thousands of dollars to live well. Use what you have.
I'm glad you liked the pudding!
Thank you so much, Kathy!
My closet currently belongs in a horror flick so really needed to hear this. Jennifer, your reminder videos are always so welcomed and helpful. ❤️
I prefer this kind of content to haul videos.
100%!
Where did you find that soundtrack? I’m currently re-reading Anne of Green Gables to escape to a sweeter time. I loved that CBC version.
I decluttered both our closets yesterday. Happy. Today I decluttered our utility room closet. We deserve to find our thngs.
I still dress smart-casual, I loved my career clothes in the 70s-90s and am not giving up my blazers, skirts, etc.🙂
Thanks for the inspiration to upgrade the basics on a budget. It is so timely with the economic uncertainty many of us are facing.
I also believe in DO IT NOW. Every year we are gifted with kitchen towels and oven Mits. Of. I have to get rid of the old ones from the year before.
Thank you so much ♥️
Wherever you are, be all there. Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God. ~Jim Elliot
I don't think of myself as "formal" but I do like the idea of living fully and richly.
I will love to connect with all of you beautiful elegant ladies from around the world, if you wish, please let’s connect together on IG.
So funny seeing this comment as I just upgraded my measuring cups. I totally agree with you.
@@bigblue4579 haha, enjoy your new measuring cups, I still have my 👀eyes out for a lovely set
Wow! Great find.
Sad, but true!
I agree. I have found many serving pieces still in the box. I see a lot of sliver plate and Waterford. Are people getting items from their wedding and thinking ' When would I even use something so fancy? ' Is it just that people do not want items that can't be tossed in the dishwasher?
Jealous!! What a find! Well done. I second the idea too. My local little tiny op shop has always got plenty of nice things.
Jennifer
This was a wonderful video ! And very much needed as a lot of us may think you need to have a lot of money to live more elevated life style - but there you are sharing these simple tips ! Thank you so much ! And yes - we are out there - we who still pickup the actual book to read :-) thank you and you got me laughing at the pantry moment !
I absolutely love these living more formally videos, Jennifer! Thank you so much for making them!
Thank you! ♥️
Just bought my first audio Madame Chic book, looking forward to listening to it while traveling this week. Your video really made me think about the things we store away for that special occasion, and in doing so we suppress some of life's little joys. I'm inspired to change that now, thank you!
I looked for it on audible and couldn't find it!
What a wonderful video! I'm definitely breaking out the special tablecloths tonight :-) And thank you for the compliment on my book 📚☺️
It’s such a pleasure, Dr. Chloe. I love your book! ✨
I love the Madam Chic series. Great addition to my library. 😊
Thank you, Jennifer, for another wonderful video! Speaking of reading books, I would love for you to continue your book club series. Thank you! ❤️
I love this. I grew up very casual, but I love beautiful, sleek modern places. Thank you for providing such valuable information.
Thank you for these fine living tips.
You always inspire me! Thank you.
Love 'The Lost Art of Dress'. Fascinating book.
I use my good dishes and cloth napkins. It always makes me happy!
Yes, yes! Love this! I adore reading! Real books and libraries are wonderful. Burn the candles, use the nice things! Many thanks, Jennifer.❤️🌹
Many years ago, I said I would not be one of those women who walked around the house in sweatpants and a T-SHIRT!!! Hence, my satin pajamas are STRICTLY for LOUNGING from after my morning shower until I change into my sleeping pajamas at night. It definitely elevates my mood.
Thank you! Love your books!😊
Thank you, Teresa!
For background music, I love jazz, easy listening from the ‘60s, and vintage bossa nova. Oh, and sometimes if my mood really needs a pick-me-up, something about ‘80s Japanese city pop just never fails to hit the spot.
What practical, sensible tips! Thank you! 😀
How wonderful! I hope you enjoyed the tart!
Both the Tart and the dessert were delicious!
Thank you, Jennifer, you always have the best ideas for the best life!! I have loved this channel for a long time!!❤️
I took it up a notch today and wore a dress … definitely a mood booster.
I'm often so inspired by your wonderful ideas. You certainly are a welcomed guest each time I watch a video.
