THANK YOU FOR SHARING. YOU ARE A G I A N T! The song 'Smoke Rings' is one of my favorites. I had it till now on a tape. Now thank to news technics I can see Glen Gray playing. You give his band a chance to be alive again. A pity digitalization, internet and UA-cam had come in our lives a bit too late. Most people who had lived at the time these bands were active are dead.
Eugenie Baird was one hell of a singer! Also good to see Clarence Hutchenrider, Tony Briglia and Peewee Hunt were still going strong as mainstays of the original Casa Lomans.
And because the orchestra was a "co-op", its members *insisted* Glen become their official conductor in 1937 (before that, he usually sat playing in the saxophone section, while violinist Mel Jenssen led the group).
By now, 1943, the co-op CLO had freshly broken up and Glen owned 100% of the franchise. The new band kept a handful of the old sidemen (Hutch, Pee Wee, Tony) and added much new talent including Eugenie Baird, the first female singer the band had ever hired. Shortly they would being in trombonist-arranger Ray Conniff, pianist Charlie LaVere, and cornet legend Red Nichols. Pretty sure the hot tenor man here is Lon Doty, whose ability to double on fiddle got him a spot in Spade Cooley's western swing band later in the '40s.
I see Glen Gray conducting the CLO, not performing on sax at 7:00 nor anywhere else. To go by another film with the CLO called 'Jam Session' with personnel posited by @deralteu96dasboot, the sax solo is delivered by Lon Doty who also played fiddle (and tenor sax) with Spade Cooley.
What a treat to see the lovely and talented Jo Stafford when she was still with the Pied Pipers. She was amazing.
She sure was !
She was one of my favorite singers from the big band era!
Just imagine going into a Night Club or hotel ballroom and enjoying a show from a band such as this.
Ah, don't! That sound coming out at you. The stuff which dreams are made of.
That would be wonderful! I was just thinking the same thing. I was born in the wrong era.
How lovely it would be!
Glen Gray and CLO was a swingin' band!
Great show of performers
Wonderful music from days gone past…..

Iam sorry for ignorance, I think, that everybody knows, but who is the left handed trumpet hi-note player?
They just called him “Lefty”
It's Corky Cornelius.
Glen Gray didn´t say a word to the viewers.....
Where are the mikes?
Is the high trumpet solo by Maynard Ferguson ? Sure looks like him.
It's Corky Cornelius.
Lead sax player is??
Why did they keep singing "taking a shit"?
Hahahaha
At least it's not "Let's go, Brandon!"
They only ate steak and eggs three meals per day, so doing that was a big deal.
