VW themselves consider the mk4 the best. I have one and it’s a fantastic balance of fun to drive and comfort. I had a Mk2 and the mk4 is eons better IMO.
Enjoyable. Would like to see more like this - evolutions of even ordinary models to see how they've changed eg. how different something like a Civic is, from how it started. Or Fiesta or 3-series BMW or Discovery or....anything, really... to see how needs/demands have changed. Could do without silly comments like: "It does seem a little bit old-fashioned in here", though, on a design which is over 40 years old. What are you expecting?!
I think the video was really well produced. The 1080p50 footage looks so smooth and sharp. When you switched to the internal camera, it felt a bit disjointed due to the lower frame rate and resolution. But if your future videos are of this sort of quality, I'd watch most of them.
Its true. A top spec Golf R is nudging £50k! And a top spec GTI is probably around £45k. Ridiculous figures, for what most people glance at as ‘ordinary cars’.
2:18 I purchased this vehicle new. A 2001, 1.8T four door, stick, winter package of this car. AND I LOVED IT!!! Now I drive a 2013, 2 door, Tartan plaid interior, stick version of this (3:23) car and LOVE IT JUST AS MUCH... GTI and Golf vehicles are the best cars you can get for the money.
The Mk2 is the best looking by a mile. I had a Mk2 non gti really late on that had been owned by an ex copper and it was mint. In white and completely rust free. He'd ziebarted the whole undercarriage and it ran sweet. I think it was a 1.3l. Drove wonderfully and I bought it for my girlfriend but she couldn't handle the heavy non assisted steering and couldn't make any sense out of the manual choke. I eventually sold it to a welder for at my work for what I paid for it and he loved it. Until some drunken arsehole rear ended it and killed it while it was parked. Such a shame because as a mk2 It would have been a survivor. It had 37,000 miles on the clock. This was in about 2009.
MK1/MK2 will forever have that classic golf look, however, the front end of the MK4 and the back end of the MK5 would have been the perfect combination.
Ti ko it is by far the most popular GTI to modify and show where I’m from but it seems like a lot of reviewers don’t like its stock power output and quality.
This is the most inconsistent UA-cam channel ever let's make a video every 4 years
"mk3 is more fun to drive"... lol than mk2? You've earned a dislike
Who else is hugely disappointed it's not Rebecca (if I'm even remembering her name right).
She went to What car.
Well that would explain it :)
the golf iv was the first gti to be well built with decent performance , you are clueless
Why am I still subscribed lol.
HG504 I don't know this channel is garbage they put out new content like once every year
Lol just realised I’m still subscribed
Me too, miss Rebecca though.
Matias Alfeus she’s been on What Car for a while now
Yeah, but they are having different reviewing procedures there, not as fun and interesting as when she was at carbuyer or telegraph cars.
How can he rate the heavy less agile MK3 better than a MK2 to drive?
He likes the VR6 I suppose. It is my favorite motor as well....
I like the mk4
Me too from South Africa

S Maphela I like them aesthetically. Reliability and performance wise, not so much...

Why is he dressed like he’s come from 2003
Adam Chase Why not? Does it matter?
Adam Chase he's pretending to be James May
Do let us know what you think! We're bringing back the car reviews, but with more short features like this as well.
Telegraph Cars it‘s Great, thanks!

I’ve been waiting for this video for years
A mint MK1 GTI. ....would love to own one.
This chap is dull and charmless, he seems to get dressed in the dark as well.
Didn't Carfection do this just before Christmas?
The Dagda yes but they didn’t even drive the mk6, and slagged it off. This a better review, and the mk6 comes across well here, as it should.
Right now the Up! GTI is the real people's car hot hatch. For the price of Golf you might as well buy a used Lambo.
a bit of a stretch.

If you can afford the running cost of a Lamborghini then you would have a lot more than 50k to spend
It’s too flimsy and slow.
I doubt if Telegraph readers would buy this rubbish

How can the MK4 be your least favorite? Surely you're on drugs...
Absolutely I am in love mk4 golf and jetta
Chris K Europeans have weird opinions on things. I see where the mk5 is where they got back on track but... the mk4 is great

I love ‘em all I got a mark VII
Mk4 is boring?
Mk 5/6/7 are basically the same car. A brand new GTI is actually a 15 year old design.
Wait is he telling me that older cars are slower and less equipped than new cars?! Thank God I know now
If anyone is wondering where Rebecca is at, she does videos for WhatCar now, go check it out
im not sure whats the point to compare the mark 1 to the the mark 7....
Dead channel? That's a shame since the videos are good.
Rebecca, was ist los mit Dir, hoffentlich ist das nur eine Ausnahme das Du vertreten wirst!!!
Great review.Thanks
I love the lights on the 92
You missed the MK2 16V :-(
Point missed.....
Golf are overpriced, wouldn't touch them.
What would you buy?
What have you done to our Rebecca? I subscribed your channel because of her .... 😔
Noor Hafeez Gone to WhatCar
Zara R Loads of Thanks 🙄
MK5, MK6 and 7 are the nicest
TheClubshaker mk5 and mk7.5 are the nicest
Love Like a Hurricane mk5.5 facelift of 2008 is the nicest next to 7.5
Mk6 GTI Ed35 👌🏼 And the new 7.5 Golf R DSG
