Damon Wayans discovered Jim Carey at a comedy club. Jim said that not only did he connect him with Keenan Ivory Wayans, he let him live with him and his family for a few months until he got on his feet.
On the movie set of Earth Girls Are Easy is when I think they really bonded which led to Jim being on "In Living Color" the next year. Never heard of them living together but throw me a link to verify.
This was during the onslaught of televangelists like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart ! Still hilarious!
It was an amazing time for comedy.
Jim Carey was a force all on his own with his physical comedy and outrageous characters.
With the Wayans & cast of A Living Color, it was magic.
We never missed it.
I remember my living room with 10 young men and women, all roaring with laughter regularly.
And TV preachers are still like that! I loved this show! I was in my early 30s during that time, now I'm...not...so I really love seeing these shows again.
The Reverend pulling a cell phone out his pocket was funny to see because only 2% of Americans had cellphones around 1990. So seeing anyone actually have a cellphone meant they were of some importance. The cost of a cellphone was about $1200 which would be around $2800 in 2023. You couldn't text either. Calls only. 😅
Early 90's my dad's job got him one for his car. It was about three foot long and plugged into the cigarette lighter for power lol

One of the best comedy shows ever!! It's where Jennifer Lopez basically got her start as well, as one of the 'Fly Girls'. Jim Carrey, one of our best Canadian actors/comedians, we love him up here!!
And Carrie Ann Inaba!
Carrey had been doing stand up and movies for a decade before ILC. He's also been opening for Rodney Dangerfield on his tour.
Martin Short is another one of our good Canadian comedic talents.

This reminds me of the Reverend Ike. Mid 80's South Carolina. He would be on the radio saying money is evil, so send me your money so I can take the evil from you, or God wants me to have a new Cadillac, so send in your donations. The amazing part was that people sent him money!
I wouldn't say Jim Carrey stole the show. They had a LOT of hysterically funny skits. Carrey was right at home with the rest of them. I'd have LOVED to attend one of Wayans family picnics. That whole family was funny!
They had funny answers for all the questions ! Jim Carey was New then ! Became Big Star because of this show !
A truly Damon Wayans was the biggest star of that show. He was the funniest one. You guys really do need to watch the whole show.

Think about how many times that lady tells the, "Jim Carrey licked my forehead" story.
Watch to first season... when it was fresh and new... you can see Jim, and Jamie were outstanding but so was Damian and David... brillant comedy... great script writing... their sister was also great...

Sadly this is more real than satire.
I believe that is what saltire is. Mocking what is terribly true. It's more of a poignant comedy. Comedy with a message, truth and in your face.
At that time, in the '90s, Jim Carrey was making fun of pastors such as Oral Roberts and Jim Baker, he even made fun of Jimmy Swaggart, when he said "I have sinned against you" (It's on utube)
I believe that Damon Wayans was poking fun at Reverend Ike. Reverend Ike was very extravagant, as far as preachers go. He was quoted for saying "the best thing that he could do for poor people is not to be one of them!"
I caught the Jimmy Swaggart part, but I didn't think of Reverend Ike. I forgot about him. I was thinking Creflo Dollar. So funny.
My favorite skits were the portrayals of Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Mohammed Ali. Three men and a baby.

That "Lord, I have sinned against you" line at 4:28 was a reference to the famous evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's on air confession after he was caught entering a hotel room with a prostitute in 1988. It would have been easily recognized at the time this aired.

You're just more familiar with Jim. If you watched the show, he wasn't the only stand out. Damon Waynes, David Alan Greer, Tommy Davidson & Jaime Foxx to name a few. Jim just got more film opportunities. Not hating on Jim. He is a legend. You should check out Major Payne starring Damon.
