If the oil is very black. You mentioned you could have problem. What could be the cause of black oil? Could it be that it not have been changed for many many years?
Most likely it needed to be changed much sooner. But black is certainly better than milky, which would indicate a serious water intrusion problem (failed seal, cracked housing etc).

What is the protrusion from the transmission cover?
I have 2xDP Lower legs, and they don't have that protrusion?
