Raven. A lot of people think he was just a character and that was his strength but he was perfect in the ring. No mistakes, no flash, just rugged and solid. Made everyone he was against look great. Lots of run-ins and shenanigans but all excellently timed and executed. A brilliant in-ring talent who never gets looked at that way.
You have to remember, Dave was the one who introduced countless American fans to Japanese wrestling in the 90s. He has lost the plot with his star ratings but you cant deny his influence on pro wrestling audiences.
He has seen more wrestling than you ever will. His ratings don't influence me. I think his journalistic skills are pretty bad. I believe punk when he called out dave to be a liar. I think all that is 100% true but the lad has helped put alot of eyes on wrestling that takes place outside the wwe and that's always a good thing. I know that his ratings has helped me get into different styles of wrestling easily. It's okay to recognize someone's strengths as well as weaknesses. And I don't think it is wild for some one to say that their taste in wrestling expanded because of him. Now if someone says they became a better journalist because of him, okay that's just a lie lmao
The original Doink The Clown (Matt Borne) was the modern day Joker. He was a sadistic, maniacal heel at the beginning. Vince corrupted the character by making him a cartoonish babyface. Evil Doink was compelling, good Doink was a joke.
My main problem with Solo is how they originally introduced him as an Umaga-esque character who even Roman was afraid of then immediately did a 180 and basically turned him into a jobber before he even tried to usurp Roman. That made it hard for me to ever fully take him seriously again.
I remember The Lightning Kid wrestling in 1989. He was so scrawny but stood out & believable because his unique style in the late 80s, to the point I can still remember that in 2025. He is super underrated!!
That’s quite the take on omegas selling. Bret sold like a true athlete his entire career. If your in a fight and you get your leg broken your not gonna did flips no amount of mental gymnastics can change that. Calling it athletic selling is like calling a pyramid scheme, multi level marketing and thinking it’s a different thing it’s not.
@@TonyFleury"pretentious" is just a buzzword used by people with have self loathing issues because God forbid someone likes something more than they do
With what Simon was saying about Solo I think people really do confuse a bad character played and booked poorly with a character who you hate because you are meant to. The whole thing that he "sucks" and isn't Roman is half the point of the story. Plus Roman relied on Solo just as much as he relies on Jacob Fatu.
I would probably rank Raven as my number one on this list. He had such a captivating character and Paul Heyman worked so well with him. But both Bischoff and McMahon infamously 'didn't get' the Raven character, nor it's appeal. But then Eric had his finger on the pulse. He gave us all that Sturgis and KISS stuff that no wrestling fans cared for.
The most misunderstood wrestler in my opinion is Lance Storm. You can say whatever you want about him as a wrestler but he was one of the very few wrestlers that any given night could keep up with any wrestler in the ring. His wrestling style may have been boring but it got the job done and let's not forget during wcw's heyday he was carrying three belts. Which was something that was unheard of at the time Lance was a damn good wrestler and I wish more people would see that.
Always interesting to get detailed perceptions and thoughts from these folks, whether you agree or not. Especially insightful to always hear Simon and he’s so easy to articulate his thoughts and points.
Great to see Shane McMahon on the list. I don't think André was misrepresented. Sure, the Dave ratings have become increasingly laughable, but I don't think he had nearly that sway. André-Hogan was hardly an in-ring classic, but they carried the story that fans wanted. And I think he gets credit for that.
90s Shawn Michaels was supernova heights personified. I couldn’t believe what I was watching - the balance of total athleticism and selling was special
Unfortunate that image of him is ruined due to footage of him being inappropriate with a very young looking girl. He used to be my password to everything I idolised the man
Braun killing Shane dead at Wrestlemania is genuinely awesome, but yeah Shane after his return was always presented as the coolest guy on the show. Attitude Era Shane was a weasely little nerd with a bit of a death wish, and that’s how it should be
I think Solo and the New Bloodline are going to have a good showing in the Rumble. But imagine if Jacob Fatu turns on Solo and tosses him out. Boom big Mania Match
the dude that said Kenny Omega needs to find a new job for himself because he is dumber than a pile of rocks. Omega isn't misunderstood he just isn't as good as Meltzer says. He can't really sell well, his go to is a slap on the tigh and dropping another wrestler on his head. His promos are bad bc he sounds like hotline worker, and he isn't even close to being a final boss or an athlete. He is just a dude Meltzer loves
Prince Iaukea From He Was a Good Performer But It was Vince Russo who saddled him with that Sus Prince gimmick and I was a fan of Prince for 7 years as of this year still look forward to seeing Under The Cherry Moon and Sign O'Times If they were easy to find really my dudes Prince Iaukea great Wrestler like his work In WCW wish he worked In TNA though
1:13 in the video, and I must add something whether or not you do so eventually; the man clearly had imposter syndrome! He literally copied everything Roman did! Even his speech patterns! This kind of incompetence is what happens in a world of alternative facts and personal truths. His character isn’t deep in the slightest and people want to say that and they don’t even know what the character is. His character was clear the first night he did it.
The most misunderstood wrestler is Triple H. People need a damn eye opener because they hate that dude fir no reason. Everything he did back in the day paid off in the longer run.
They hate him because they don't like wrestling, they like the politics of wrestling, they only ever talk about politics and they have the nerve to call him, Hogan, Cena and various others political lol
HBK is so poorly judged for his backstage antics in the 90's it really does cloud the judgement of far too many people especially when it was basically a dog eat dog environment back then by most accounts. He put on show stealing matches nearly every show and even those who hated him in the back at the time still wanted to work with him because they knew the match would be good. No matter what people think without him the attitude era doesn't happen as the Summerslam match of Bret Hart vs Undertaker with him as the ref followed by the birth of DX changed the way the company went as i remember watching it as a teen and slowly WWF started to get more edgy through the months
Christian is a great performer but compared to everyone he was up against at any given time in WWE, he was never going to be in the top heel or babyface position. He was higher on the card in TNA but transport the rest of WWE's main event scene at the time to TNA, he definitely would have slid right down that card. He's a highlight in AEW, a promotion where most of the roster aren't trained for television and don't consider promos important. Vince McMahon is a scumbag and I like Christian, but he's never been underrated.
Non of the above... Why! Here is why... Said the bald man ... Misunderstood meaning as they was never understood by the wrestling scene his pairs and the audience... Then the critics opinions as you as Meltzer... Don't mean anything... One single misunderstood example is the bogeyman... simon gets it. so many on this channel kept saying solo sucked or he wasnt convincing as the leader of the bloodline. THAT WAS THE POINT.
True. Solo played the role perfectly.
@@BryRobinsonI like solo don't care what you care.
Simon is the only good one on this channel anymore. anybody else just says dumb shit to get clicks and attention
That was just a gang of bullies trying to ruin a young man's fledgling career, happens all the time in the wrestling community
Solo is awesome. 👏 I rly enjoyed his character development in bloodline 2.0 his personality rlly shined through

Andy: Dave Meltzer has done alot to influence my taste in wrestling.
Well that explains alot😒
You have to remember, Dave was the one who introduced countless American fans to Japanese wrestling in the 90s. He has lost the plot with his star ratings but you cant deny his influence on pro wrestling audiences.

The original Doink The Clown (Matt Borne) was the modern day Joker. He was a sadistic, maniacal heel at the beginning. Vince corrupted the character by making him a cartoonish babyface. Evil Doink was compelling, good Doink was a joke.
Agreed!
Hot take: character work was way more original back then in WWE. Everyone sounds the same now except punk and KO
My main problem with Solo is how they originally introduced him as an Umaga-esque character who even Roman was afraid of then immediately did a 180 and basically turned him into a jobber before he even tried to usurp Roman. That made it hard for me to ever fully take him seriously again.

Simon is pretty much the only one that answered this question appropriately ............the rest were saying everything about nothing
Getting Andy Murray into wrestling is just another reason why I have distain for Dave Meltzer
I’ve always found Andy Murray to be a pretentious dork. His admiration for Meltzer really explains it all.
@@TonyFleury"pretentious" is just a buzzword used by people with have self loathing issues because God forbid someone likes something more than they do
Most misunderstood? Have you watched an old Warrior promo?
Didn't understand a word of it ever!
When he was in the shortlived "Mega Maniacs" tag team he had a real 'Dude' Ultimate Warrior style about his talking and it was comprehensible enough 😂
I always get annoyed at folks saying sOlO iSnT tHe ReAl ChIeF no sht Sherlock. He’s meant to not be the real deal. It’s the story! 🤣
Having more scenarios with solo looking worried or, in deep thought, when he was alone would help put over the "overcompensating heel"

15:30-19:36 4 minutes is INSANE! Even made talking about the best wrestler alive garbage
Nice ss decontrol reference, great band
Probably because of the Chyna Tape and his X-rated skit during DX days
That's why Sean Waltman is being disrespected
Finally, Andy and me agree. Andre is the damn man
That’s Shawn take is valid because he seemed to overlook now due to the Indy style they call him the stopper for he was so damn good.
2:55 if you want a spot monkey your option are Shane, Matt or Jeff
For me, it’s The Great Khali
Cheers, Andrew. When I thought about who I would say if asked this question, my first thought was Sean Waltman.
Shout out to the piece of white fuzz on Simon's cheek for the first few minutes of the video.

Solo and Roman both lack the charisma to be the top guy in era of wrestling history in the attitude era been nothing a body for Austin stun
Didn't know i'd come across an SSD reference in here. Is right Andy! THE KID'S WILL HAVE THEIR BLOODY SAY!!
Solo is great.
For me it was shemus
Yeah Meltzer's takes are trash
Shawn is miss understood. For so long he was my goat but then I saw a video of him kissing and motorboating a very very young looking girl
Could take my eyes off the bit of food in Simon’s beard. 😆
Eww Christian was a midcarder at best and isn’t even good looking. I’m sick of these sensitive UA-camrs. I miss Vince!
Simon Miller ❤❤❤
