Hi Dr. Chen, thank you for the informative video! When do you recommend students take a research year if they choose to do so, and how early should a student begin planning for a research year if they hope to take one?
There's no set time. The usual I see is between 3rd and 4th year, mainly so that students can be sure they want to do derm after finishing core clerkships and some electives, and before they apply. I would say students should start trying to indentify a mentor in the winter and spring before the research year is to start. But just some generalities as everyone's schedule is different depending on the school's curricular schedule.

Glad it was helpful! I think it's best to strategically do research at a program that might take you as a resident in the future. So look at their residents and see if there are any IMGs. If there are, and they previously did research at that program, it'd be a good sign!

What are your thoughts on Step 1 becoming pass/fail and how it will affect admissions for residency? Will students need to complete even more research? What is the average amount of research projects derm applicants complete? Thank you :)
Good question! I really hope we don't start using Step 2CK as a stand in, but I'm worried that's what will happen. I actually think there is considerable effort from the program director side to try to put an end of application creep, so my hope is we can address these issues in a standardized way. Avg # is hard to say - I think quality > quantity. I usually see ~10 papers for folks who have taken a year off, but I think if you had fewer but they were bigger projects, that'd be an important consideration.

2. Also are there any conditions to that, for example: does it only count if in premed years your research was published? does it only count if your premed research was in an area relevant to your specialty interest?

Hello! Sorry for the delay. In general, any publication is a publication. That said, I think more weight will be put toward your more recent research. As for whether things count only if they're published, no. Any research experience you've had is important in terms of the skills you've learned, so be sure to mention it. That said, for residency applications, we tend not to include high school information, so it's hard to put that information in, but a publication would still make it into your application.
Would you say a master's is just as good as a research year for dermatology applications? Or would a research year be better?
Great question! Both would help your derm application. A masters is nice because the degree you earn will always be with you and it may help in the future. But a masters may cost more than a research year (in terms of lost wages, actual stipend - think opportunity cost)!
Do you think a 30 years old Img specialized in dermatology with postgraduate studies from his country, has any chance to apply for dermatology residence in us if he started usmle now? What should he do?
Of course! 30 is the new 26 ;) USMLE is a good start, and then what usually helps IMGs with applications is a dedicated research experience for 1-2 years, which can help get great letters of recommendation.
Do we need to do researches In US. um IMG and research i hv done here still worth for my cv.

You don't have to, but most successful IMG applicants to US dermatology residencies do a lot of research in the US with a US mentor. This helps you get a strong letter of recommendation for your applications.
