The funniest thing about this episode is Kramers thought process that having the Merv Griffin set somehow obligates him to conduct the show in his apartment.
Being born in 1964 I remember The Merv Griffin Show very well. One of the most famous talk shows, it ran from 1962 to 1986 Mon-Fri. Merv wrote a lot of songs as well. The one that made him very rich was the theme to Jeopardy. Rick Moranis does the funniest parody of Merv on the classic SCTV.
I was born in 77 so I barely remember the show from when I was very little. I remember the name more because I think he produced a lot of 80s game shows.
It's a little surprising Seinfeld would do a whole title storyline about a show that had ended 10 years earlier and originated *30* years earlier. I guess NBC had a pretty solid lead over the other late night shows at the time so they wouldn't want a story about, say, Johnny Carson being off the air which could lower the reputation of their current iteration Tonight Show, so Merv Griffin was the most show where the name was likely to catch attention. As far as I can tell the actual humor is pretty generally about late night talk shows, not much specifically about Merv Griffin?
I couldn't tell you why but this was always one of my favorite episodes. Kramer stuffing his face during his "commercial break" never fails to crack me up.
I work next to a warehouse where they store old TV show sets. Yeah, the garbage truck backs up to their gate when they throw stuff out now. No more saving old sets. LOL
I saw Merv Griffin in person in the 1980's. I was working security for a community of millionaires, and he drove up in a small British convertable. His hair was wild from the wind. I knew he was someone I know, but I couldn't place him in my mind until hours later.
You can tell Jason Alexander broke character when Michael Richards was shoving those chips into his mouth during "the commercial break". You can see Jason laughing at him from the side😅
Merv Griffin was a daytime talk show as late as the early to mid 1980s. Kind of like the Oprah of that era. Very popular. Contemporary of Johnny Carson.
Not only did Merv Griffin create the gameshow _Jeopardy_ , he also created _Wheel of Fortune_ which is now being hosted by one of Merv's old proteges, Ryan Seacrest.
The Merv Griffin show was a daytime talk show that used the format of a late-night talk show, but with less obvious humor. I have fond memories of it because I used to watch it with my grandmom after school while I waited for my mom to get home from work. My grandmom loved Merv Griffin.
Merv Griffin was one of the main huge talk show hosts back in the day. He was also a massive TV producer (think Jeopardy). He wrote the theme song to Jeopardy as well and made more money off of the rights to that theme song than anything else he did.
A funny moment on the Merv Griffin Show, in retrospect, is when Jayne Mansfield was on the show with her 3 years old daughter Mariska Hargitay. During the interview, Mariska was acting up to get attention, and Merv humorously said to her, "Hey, get your own show." Years later she did - Law and Order Special Victims Unit.
I enjoyed these late season, post-Larry David episodes more when I was younger I think, when my sense of humour was a lot wackier. They stretch the boundaries of credulity just a little too much for me now. But only compared to the older episodes. Still very funny, and still my favourite comedy of all time. 😂
hey guys hilarious episode you reacted to.i still would recommend "the boyfriend","the hot tub","the soup" or "the sniffing accountant" before you finish up the series.
Merv Griffin was a TV talk show host and TV show producer from the 1960s through the 1990s. Many other talk shows, sitcoms, and game shows were produced by Merv Griffin.
I don't know if this was already mentioned, but along with being a talk-show host and producing Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, he could also sing very well. I remember him singing during his talk-show in the late 70's. I think he loved songs that had that "big band" feel to them.
What about the part where they're watching George's old home movies from when he was a kid? George - " This is where they change me. Look away" Jerry - "Aren't you like 8 years old there?" George - " 7 and a half..."
As a kid in the 90s I knew Merv Griffin’s name because “Merv Griffin Productions” was announced at the end of every episode of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Merv Griffin wasn't only a great gameshow creator (Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune), but was also a staple in the talk show circuit for a couple decades.
I like this because I want to go back and watch the show but I don't have anyone that want to watch, laugh, and discuss them with me. This is a good substitute.
Me and my mom reference this episode all the time when she’s driving and we see pigeons. Like Anthony said, that’s the part I remember the most, but this whole episode is hilarious. It’s actually really chaotic, even more so than usual, but Seinfeld just has that ability to take the chaos and just make it all work and come together. I don’t think the last 2 seasons are as good as the first 7 in that respect, that’s where they really miss Larry David in my opinion, but this episode nails it.
There’s actually more tryptophan in milk than in turkey. The reason people get tired on Thanksgiving is because people consume like 1500 calories in a single meal and carb crash. 10:43 she said nut bread
Merv Griffin didn't just have a popular daytime talk show, but he also created a bunch of super popular game shows, including Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. And BTW, tryptophan does not cause drowsiness. That's an urban legend. The drowsiness is caused by overeating. The blood rushes to your stomach to aid with digestion and away from your head.
So they say...I have read many foods have higher levels of tryptophan, but they don't have the same affect. Maybe it's something else, but turkey makes people sleepy.
Some sitcoms have catchy joke episode titles. Seinfeld didn’t want the writers to waste time on titles to help episode. That’s why they are all simple episode titles.
I only remember the Merv Griffin episode in 1977 where he had expressed his utter astonishment after watching Star Wars when it was first released. Many of us had reacted the very same way to that groundbreaking film.
I just tried looking that up, but all I found on UA-cam was Seinfeld's first appearance on Merv Griffin, Star TREK cast members as Merv Griffin's guests, and some AI generated versions of Star Wars with a lot less clothing :( Sounds like a good way to appreciate the revolutionary impact the film had though!
Oh childrens, yes "The Merv Griffin Show" was a talk show that started in the 60s and ran until 1986. Other talk show hosts from that timeframe include, Dick Cavett, Phil Donahue, and Mike Douglas. Most of these shows ran for 20 years or more.
And Donahue was replaced by none other than Jerry Springer. Springer started out continuing Donahue’s format, but in an attempt to boost sagging ratings, retooled it into the trashy show we all know and love.
Pigeons "operated by the CIA". In the post-apocalyptic Fallout 4 video game, all the black crows that are seen in the game are actually "Synths" or synthetic cyborg spies run by a shadowy faction known as "The Institute".
This was my favourite Seinfeld episode at one time; the episodes where each character has a funny arch are the best. Didn't get as much out of the George story because he'd have dropped that gf in a second. The Stand In is my current favourite -- Kramer with Mickey on All My Children, Elaine's "He took it out", and George dating that woman out of spite are all classic.
Merv Griffin hosted a syndicated talk show in the 1960s through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. I saw him usually in the afternoon on one of our local stations. As a kid (preteen), I found him kind of boring, so we would watch the other syndicated talk show hosts like Dinah Shore or Mike Douglas. He was singer in front of an Orchestra and had the first album ever recorded on magnetic tape. Then he got into television as a game show host. He also had the idea for Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and developed them and originally produced them.
A friend of mine has millions of dollars on the wall of him and his wife's bedroom. Every original Star Wars toy unopened from his childhood. I don't know how these people don't play with these toys.

I know right😂
I love it. So crazy but perfectly executed.

Born as well in 1964. One of the show's highlights for me was when Merv had the band Chilliwack performing Gone Gone Gone.😊
I was born in 77 so I barely remember the show from when I was very little. I remember the name more because I think he produced a lot of 80s game shows.
That's fascinating, my only prior knowledge about that show was this Seinfeld episode
Merv Griffin actually created the TV game show, Jeopardy. He was probably richer than God because of that show.
That's one of my favorite parts
".... AND WERE BACK!"
lol The ''Sidler" sidled Celia at the end. "Who is he..oh he's nobody..."
Maybe my favorite episode. Kramer's absurd attempt to host a talkshow in his apartment is beyond surreal. Brilliant.
This episode at first was sneaky good underrated, but over the years it has become my favorite.
I work next to a warehouse where they store old TV show sets. Yeah, the garbage truck backs up to their gate when they throw stuff out now. No more saving old sets. LOL
damn, they were so creative with the writing. the intertwining, its genius.
Merv Griffin produced more than a dozen shows. A mixture of Game Shows and Talk Shows
I saw Merv Griffin in person in the 1980's. I was working security for a community of millionaires, and he drove up in a small British convertable. His hair was wild from the wind. I knew he was someone I know, but I couldn't place him in my mind until hours later.
Next episode should be "the Frogger"
YESSSS!!!!!! One of my favorite and most ridiculous episodes!!
One of Jerry Seinfeld’s first TV appearances was on the Merv Griffin Show in 1981, when he was 27 years old.
Wowwwww
This is one of my favorite episodes!
You can tell Jason Alexander broke character when Michael Richards was shoving those chips into his mouth during "the commercial break". You can see Jason laughing at him from the side😅
The Susie / The Susie

The comeback and the non-fat yogurt episodes are a must watch.
Merv Griffin was not only a talk show host but a successful business man. On his tombstone his epitaph says "I will not be back after this message"
I had that electronic football game. LOL.
This episode is so funny😂😂 "who is that guy? Oh he's lou filerman he's new here" 😂
Merv Griffin was a daytime talk show as late as the early to mid 1980s. Kind of like the Oprah of that era. Very popular. Contemporary of Johnny Carson.
9:45 He turned it into the Jerry Springer Show.
The Merv Griffin show was still on when I graduated high school in 1986 I think.😢
A top 5 episode for me. And my favorite Kramer episode. You can see the cast crack up on the side of the frame at 4:29 😂
Not only did Merv Griffin create the gameshow _Jeopardy_ , he also created _Wheel of Fortune_ which is now being hosted by one of Merv's old proteges, Ryan Seacrest.

Merv Griffin was a long time Talk Show Host in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's. Created Wheel and redid Jeopardy.
Merv Griffin was one of the main huge talk show hosts back in the day. He was also a massive TV producer (think Jeopardy). He wrote the theme song to Jeopardy as well and made more money off of the rights to that theme song than anything else he did.
Jim Fowler was a real life animal expert that often appeared on TV talk shows with wild animals just like he did here.
A funny moment on the Merv Griffin Show, in retrospect, is when Jayne Mansfield was on the show with her 3 years old daughter Mariska Hargitay. Kramer doing the talk show bit is so good.

They stretch the boundaries of credulity just a little too much for me now. But only compared to the older episodes. Still very funny, and still my favourite comedy of all time. 😂
The last two seasons were a bit far fetched.
I love the talkshow, wish he did it for real.
George bewildered look as he entered Kramer's Merv Griffin show is the best part of the episode
hey guys hilarious episode you reacted to.i still would recommend "the boyfriend","the hot tub","the soup" or "the sniffing accountant" before you finish up the series.
Merv griffin created alot of shows, particularly Jeopardy and Wheel of fortune
The show became a cartoon in the final few seasons, and I think it's the funniest TV ever got. I love the middle seasons, but it only got better.
The Merv Griffin show was a daytime talk show from 1962 to 1986. How can you not know that or at least look it up?
Merv Griffin was a TV talk show host and TV show producer from the 1960s through the 1990s. Many other talk shows, sitcoms, and game shows were produced by Merv Griffin.

Merv Griffith television show aired from 1962 to 1986. He then went on to provide Wheel of Fortune and other game shows.

Thanks for over-analyzing Seinfeld
Wow, this episode is more absurd than I remember.
My favorite episode of the entire series.
Newman is one of my favorite characters...
greatest episode in TV history... politically correct rape jokes, George fighting an urban animal, and every moment in Kramer's apartment...
They all broke character when Kramer had that short break. He burped after that sip of Cola. You can see it in the bloopers 😄😄

Mere Griffin was a talk show host, the creator of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune...and a serial killer in Europe known as the Elevator Killer.

At the time of his death, Merv Griffin was worth over a billion dollars as the creator of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Ah, yes, a classic. You need to watch the one about the Frogger machine.
