Classic Game Room reviews MUSHA for the Sega Genesis from 1990 by Compile and Seismic.
Arguably one of the best shmup vertical shooters ever made. MUSHA is a radical mecha like robot in this game, which had a follow up title called ROBO ALESTE.
What makes this shooting space ship arcade-style game so good? Well, lots of things. Watch the entire 7-part review of MUSHA as CGR-HD goes through every level and every detail of this stunning game from Japan. Is it better than Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Thunder Force 3, Gradius V or Raiden III? Watch the review.. radient! Xbox 360 Live Arcade XBLA Megadrive virtual console.
The Sega Genesis 16-Bit Mega Drive monster was arguably the greatest video game console ever made. Hits like Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder Force 3 and Streets of Rage all saw heavy action on the Genesis.
Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. PS3 Wii.

I have this complete in box. The manual says the main character and lone surviver during initial attack of the four is named Terri and she is the main heroin.
    The team consists of:
    Greg - US air Force
    Ken - Canadian Orbital Patrol
Ted - Mid Eastern Alliance Air Force
    Andrea - French Space Navy
---> Terri - Air & Space University, Valedictorian, Main Heroin of this story

The music from this game and also from Thunder Force 3 I think are the main reason I became a musician later on in my teens. Amazing tunes! I was about 11 at the time and I would play these games for hours and spend even more time with the headphones on just playing the music from the options menu. I miss those days! Today I make futuristic epic-like electronic rock with a little bit of guitar and it is on my channel if you want to give it a go.

Interesting to note that this is one of the few videos on Mark's channel that doesn't begin with his own background music. Because Toshiaki Sakoda's epic soundtrack still holds up and cements itself as the most kick arse BGM to date!

MUSHA was one of the first Genesis games I ever owned. I bought it in early 1991...I was in the 8th grade. I never owned more than 6 carts at one time, because I liked to sell my games back to the store I bought them from and use the money to buy new ones. I kept this game until the Playstation arrived and I sold all my Sega stuff. It remains to this day, one of the very best games I've ever played.

About the soundtrack. I agree. Back then in 1990 I was thinking, "THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS TYPE OF DETAILED MUSIC TO BE IN A VIDEO GAME!" I was still in the mindset of the Nintendo Entertainment System, and my Sega Master System. Both of which I still own. I also still have this game. :)

Hey Mark, you probably get this a lot, but you're the first place I ever heard about Musha and I checked it out based on your epic review. As soon as I saw it was seven parts and one of your first Heavy Duty episodes. I just played it for the first time and I aced the first level (on easy... shh) once I realised how to pick up little buddies (on my second try) then died after 5 secs of lvl 2 when the fire button changed on me unexpectedly! I love it though, it really is one of the greatest game

The music... the music... the music. This sound track was by far my favourite on the Mega Drive. The art work is slick and the fast paced game play takes place on back drops that the current gen consoles would wish they had!

I remember watching this video when i was like 12, around 2009 or 2010. I learned a lot about the Genesis from CGR, because my brother growing up had an SNES, N64, and Playstation. The one system he did sell off was a Saturn so I didn't have much exposure to Sega stuff.

SEGA also had a completely different sound effects scheme from NINTENDO. SONIC, MUSHA, STRIDER . . many of the sounds were like sound efx echoing inside a bowl or something. It was really cool. It made SEGA gamed distinquishable. I could stand in another room and be able to tell if I was listening to a GENESIS game or a N64 game.

Damn! Missed out on this as a kid. Funny how advertising made such a big difference back then in the awareness of game releases. If it wasn't for a friend of mine who originally moved from the States to Canada who also purchased the game, I would have never even known about the great Phantasy Star I.

  • @hootyhaha
    @hootyhaha 14 років тому

DANG IT ALL!!!! I posted on this video a while back saying I still had the game in it's case and all. Well, I've moved about 11 times in 10 years.. possibly more. And I guess move after move I finally lost the dang game! Now I'm SUPER PISSED. I went on Ebay to look for copies and you're right. They're extremely rare and expensive. I still have my Genesis. And I will not give up poking around my boxes to see if I over looked it. Listening to this music makes me want it even more.

As far as the red spread bomb-shot power up goes, its best to only level it up to 3, if you level it up all the way, the black center sucker pulls enemies too close to you and they almost also blow your ship up or power you down. I have played this game hundreds and hundreds of times on Kega Fusion emulator. Great, outstanding fucking game!!!!!!!!!

Compile rocked the house on every console they produced a shooter. M.U.S.H.A. fans must try Spriggin '91 on the the PC Engine CD. Hell, Compile made some decent action / adventure games like Govellius: Valley of Doom on the Sega Master System. I truly miss Compile.

MUSHA , Earth Worm Jim, and STRYDER distracted me away from NES long enough to make me a SEGA fanatic. Not to forget about Altered Beat which I already had on my Sega Master System, and SONIC for Genesis. The unique music and sound effect alone in all Sega Master System and Sega Genesis games were enough to captivate my attention away from NES. NES games always seemed to have a white outline around all the graphics and the only game they pushed graphics on was SM3. I needed more than 1 game.

Not to mentiont hat emulators aren't always 100% accurate, you just can't expect Streets of Rage on Gens to play exactly like it would on a Sega Genesis, for instance. BTW this game's soundtrack is so kickass, it may be the best Genesis music I've heard, and the Genesis had a LOT of great soundtracks despite its inferior sound hardware, Sega and co really knew how to use that sound chip!

  • @tidq

Sad thing about MUSHA being so valuable is that while I own the cartridge from back in the day, I'm pretty sure I threw away all of my Genesis game boxes 15 years ago to save room. This was before the retro game collecting boom, and I didn't think about how I probably cut the value of my rare MUSHA game in half.

I was lucky I didn't know that this would become a great classic. Thanks for posting this I hope they dont remake it at the risk of sound ding old I hate it when there is cultural mining like the first decade of the 2000's nothing really new.
