KUSI: Pride Month and Reporting Hate Crimes and Incidents

Today, DA Summer Stephan was on KUSI News this morning to talk about Pride Month and the importance of reporting any hate crimes and hate incidents.
June is Pride Month across the country (although San Diego’s Pride Parade is in July) and everyone deserves to live in peace without fearing for their safety because of who they are or how they identify.
Unfortunately, we’ve seen an increase the past few years in the number of hate crimes cases we’ve prosecuted where members of the LGBTQIA+ community were victims.
Although the numbers are small, the number of cases we filed last year more than doubled from the year before.
Latest stats:
• 2021: we filed 30 total hate crime cases and 2 were anti-LGBTQIA+.
• 2022: we filed 21 total hate crime cases and 3 were anti-LGBTQIA+.
• 2023: we filed 30 total hate crime cases and 7 were anti-LGBTQIA+.
• Some perhaps hopeful news: thus far, in 2024, we have filed a total of 5 total hate crime cases, but none of them have been anti-LGBTQIA+
Reporting Hate Crimes:
People can and should continue to report hate crimes to their local police departments and Sheriff’s Department.
This additional reporting mechanism will act as a safety net and help ensure reports are reviewed and shared by law enforcement.
