Reloadable 308 Cartridge for the Noodler's Ahab

  • Noodler's Ink introduces its smallest bottle, with a screw on cap and seal just like any other bottle....but designed to be reloadable and to directly fill any Noodler's Ahab pen. Some customers asked repeatedly for the convenience of a small ink storage unit and/or cartridge...a biodegradable and reloadable unit is our answer. This weekend at the San Francisco Pen Show, the first reloadable 308 cartridges will be available at the table with "Pacific Dawn at the Golden Gate" ink - an ink Noodler's made specifically for the San Francisco event.
    Some of the most recent Neponset pens also can utilize the 308, though the tolerances of earlier models may be too restrictive to permit its full barrel clearance. All current production Neponset pens are being made to accommodate the 308.
    Eventually Noodler's will likely produce a cartridge case, but in the meantime other affordable and readily available alternatives are to be found. At the risk of offending those who dislike such freedom yet again, here are some very affordable pocket, hand bag, desk, and briefcase holders of Noodler's 308 reloadable cartridges (only use those made for the 308 size). These items are affordable due to their large market and economies of scale and it is hoped that the competitive prices can also benefit fountain pen users:

    Dear Nathan - you're literally the best thing to happen to fountain pens in America in the last 40 years. I always loved fountain pens but they were usually either disposable, expensive, or didn't really showcase the part that most people really care about - the inks. I bought a bottle of your black swan in aussie roses and it single handedly rekindled my love of fountain pens. Have bought a half dozen bottles, a konrad, creaper, and love my new little charlie, and will be buying everything except sheen inks (which I'd buy from you if you sold) from you for as long as you're selling them
    Rock on.

    I've had my Ahab since they were released. A week ago I bought these, and it's a game changer. Awesome product, I can throw a couple in my bag, and be confident I can keep on writing without the bottle, or wondering where I will be able to refill. Thanks for continuing to add to your products, even years after they've been on the market. Many other companies would have just made this for a new pen, forcing the consumer to make another purchase. Ahab and a spare Cartridge of Dark Matter are now part of my every day carry.

      Hi, just wanted to know about the cartridges. Will it start leaking when the ink level is low? Thanks in advance!

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  4 роки тому +3

      @@zac5914 This cartridge is insulated from the barrel wall and I have not had any issue with expansion of the air bubble....think of a WW II Morrison Patriot, Parker 51, etc...any pen with an insulated ink chamber tends not to have that issue. The air bubble only expands more insistently from the heat of your hand if the entire ink chamber rests upon the barrel wall itself with no insulation. That is why some people with large Pelikans and Mont Blancs expel the air from a piston filler during use now and then to prevent the air from making the ink flow too generous (especially on cold winter days when the temperature changes are more dramatic). The 308 cartridge sits with air, 2 walls, and generally a breather tube to control the expansion forces of temperature and atmosphere (I have often used them right down to the very last drop...even during blizzards with odd pressure systems!).

      How long does the cartridge last you? I would think a couple days. Is Ahab that wet of a writer that it uses up a whole cartridge, and requires refills, or a bottle daily??

    • @KevinHillofDOOM
      @KevinHillofDOOM 2 роки тому +1

      @@chrisblanc663 Oh, they last a while , roughly same as a piston refill. The Ahab isn't necessarily a super wet with regular writing, but it can go through some ink if you were to really push the flexing a lot. I like keeping an extra cartridge in my pouch though, as it always seems to run out when I'm away from home.

      In World War I they had rainwater and ink pellets to drop in an eyedropper filled pen...it did not work very well as many notes washed off to nothing in the trenches and their last words to loved ones were lost forever. My nightmare is a modern soldier trying to write home or for rescue during the heat of battle thinking it is his last moment...and the cell and portable device is out of range, satellite is down...if taken prisoner or worse, those portable devices are history. Some waterproof ink on a scrap of paper put under a particular black rock on white gravel in an SOS series could be the difference between rescue and a very bad experience. I wish you the best and hope you never experience that, but wanted you to know how incredibly satisfied I am in reading your comment above! Thank you for your service!

    After a VERY long time with NO vendors having these 308's in stock, I've finally received a 5-pack of these little beauties and they work with the Ahab beautifully. While my Ahab drawing pen remains eyedropper filled, my Ahab writing pen (with the non-flexible nib) writes volumes without a refill and no gushers, and my Ahab Brush flows beautifully with filled replacements standing to one side for rapid refill mid-job. These are wonderful, and Nathan deserves high praise for introducing them.

    I love these cartridges, Mr. Tardif, but I love less the apparent softness of the threads on some of them, because at least two of them have caps that no longer seal completely, or while they seal they don't stop after turning and do not seal properly on my Ahab pens. that may be my Clumsy turning or it may be a softness of the material in the threading or some quality control issues in manufacturing, but I use them, and I like them, and I bought 2 sets so far and not just because a couple of the cartridges have failed in their threading. I like them, it's a great concept and you continue to make wonderful products keep up the good work! (just take a look at the threads on some of these things)

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  4 роки тому +3

      Two people at Boston showed me this (both had tightly wound teflon tape to expand the threads and form a seal) and I gently removed almost all the teflon tape, gently heated the threads...and expanded the threads of the section by gently pushing in the cone end of a freshly sharpened pencil to expand the threads back to where they were originally (done from the rear of the section with the nib/feed removed). Part of the reason why I can drive my car over this plastic...and why it retains color so well for 80+ years...is that it has some "give" to resist cracking. I know some out there want a repair department and high end costs added to the product for issues like this...but a pencil, some teflon tape, and a little gentle heat (some use the steam from a kettle) is all that is needed if this issue ever happens.

    I've been looking for an inexpensive daily carry, but I didn't go with the Ahab because I switch colors frequently when I take notes in class (limited space and time) and preferred a snap cap. These cartridges really change the equation, though. I carry around several vials of ink because disposable cartridges are ludicrously expensive, and if these can replace those than Ahabs may replace the metropolitans I'm currently using.

      It is a very narrow range - if you were to take those three vintages from the colonial period and hold them up to the light (using modern equivalents) you'll note the colors are very close behind the glass. It is a variation of only about 6% at its greatest...but within that variation, each bottle is absolutely unique as it is bottled ONE bottle at a time...by hand. Just in case people don't know the reference...here is a quote from the first description:
      "Henry Gage (3rd Viscount Gage) son of Thomas Gage (Royal Military Governor of Massachusetts) was responsible for the purchase of an estimated 19,000 bottles of wine including the most popular at the time among the aristocrats: red port, dark sherry, and Madeira… As the aristocrats surely were not giving the wine to those commoners paying the excessively punitive taxation of empire, but instead were using it to pry influence and connections from fellow aristocrats...in order to better distribute the largess and grandeur of state power and wealth amongst themselves - Noodler’s Ink has modeled “American Aristocracy” as an ink bottled individually, one bottle at a time with each bottle thus being purposefully unique…to resemble a conservative colonial semblance of the three most aristocratic colours: red port, dark sherry, and Madeira."

    I just love the feel and writing characteristics of my new Ahab. The weird thing though is that if it sits in my hand for even thirty seconds it is dry and requires some dry scribbling to get er going again. Alternatively, and inevitably, upon starting to write, after half a page or so, the ben will kinda blurp over the page making two or three words unreadable. I am using Noodler's X-Feather and the plunger machine that came inside the pen outta the box. What am I doing wrong?????

      Any of the acrylics? do you have a video talking about the durability of acrylic vs standard ahab material?

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  8 років тому +5

      The material for Ahabs, Charlies, and many of the Konrads (except those that are ebonite and acrylic) is more durable when it comes to shock/impact and color retention in strong UV light over time....but it does not shine as well as acrylic as it is not as hard (though it insulates so well that when harder plastics feel cold in the hand...it warms to the hand almost instantly - a quality similar to classic ebonite). Acrylic has a gem like quality to it and far better color retention over time than the ubiquitous discolored vintage celluloids, but that hard quality polish/shine and inherently captivating treasure like beauty comes at the cost of reduced durability. If you send any acrylic out of a 10 gauge shotgun, it WILL shatter into dust (even at only 800 feet per second)...whereas the ahab material may splinter, it will not turn entirely to dust at the speed of sound as acrylic does. That is an extreme example...yet a less extreme example is dropping your pen at a drive up ATM and having the car in back drive over it...and you then need to sign an important document with durable ink...! You might like a pen that had its material tested down the barrel of a shotgun at that particularly unique moment as it is at least more likely to have survived enough to make a needed signature. ;-)

As it is threaded and is screwed on to seal with the existing seal of either pen (or a wrap of teflon tape if the seal was lost or broken over the years and you can't get a replacement for some reason), yet it will NOT work on the disposable cartridge pens that pierce a cartridge "one time only".
      I actually tried to make a universal design several years ago that would fit all the existing cartridge units with a reloadable/non-disposable cartridge, but was threatened with a lawsuit. I get the feeling some of those people are profoundly hostile to everything Noodler's....a few of them began their anti-Noodler's campaign before we even had the product available on a shelf for sale! With "friends" like that - who needs....?

      Well I will definitely be getting an Ahab brush pen, and the refillable cartridge when I am able. I have some older pens I will probably sell, now that I am learning and seeing better on the computer.

    Brilliant idea. Will the .308 cartridge also fit other Noodler's pens or just the Ahab?

      Neponset pens, production as of a few months ago....if the Neponset is prior production, one can ream out the barrel if one knows how and is skilled at that. The tolerances of earlier Neponset barrels are just too tight for the 308. It was thought the extra material made the barrels stronger in case they were stepped on, driven over, or fell out of a building. If I could have predicted the future, that decision would have been different at the time. ;-(

    i have question about the breather tube ... what happens if i damage or misplace the breather tube is it nessessary for the pen to be able to continue on or is there replacements ?

    Brilliant idea Nathan! Thanks much. What is the function of the plastic tube in the Ahab?

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  8 років тому +2

      The breather tube has two functions: to enable the second stroke of the filler to both expel the remaining air as well as to draw an additional full stroke of ink, and secondly - to permit the expulsion of air when atmospheric pressure changes drastically (such as during a thunderstorm). Filled as an eyedropper without the breather tube or filler (as some artists do before a large project of continuous drawing), the pen can eventually experience expansion of the air bubble and excessive flow (unless refilled whenever the air bubble begins to misbehave). Whereas, with the filler and breather tube installed, such forces are far more controlled and excessive flow is unlikely. It is from the WW II design era when the breather tube common in 1930s designs was integrated with the insulated chamber (Morrison Patriot, Parker 51 aerometric, etc..). Those WW II to 1960 designs remain the state of the art in fountain pens to this day, and the Ahab integrates many of their fundamental features.

      I appreciate your explanation and time in educating me[and many others too] on the well designed and functioning breather tube. btw My 308's (pkg of 5) have arrived, multiple colors here I come lol. Maybe the next evolution of the 308 is the 315, universal cartridge to fit most fountain pens(just a thought). Thank you so much.

    First time I saw this video, I thought: hmm that's pretty cool I just don't think I have a use for it. 2 days later: Yaaaa, I'm gonna need all the 308 stock you haveeee, thankssss. :)
    Question, Is it safe to assume there are no animal products in Noodler's Inks?

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  8 років тому +2

      There is plant material (cellulose/cotton in some biodegradable plastics, latex from rubber trees in ebonite,) involved, but NO animal matter. Even Whaleman's Sepia only mimics the whaler's squid ink of the 19th century...the original from that bygone era I do not consider as good an ink anyway as the modern. No squid are ever involved in its formation... ;-)

    Does the brush pen work on whiteboards with the waterase inks? I tried to get my teachers into them a few years back, but kids playing around with eyedropper'd preppies sometimes made a mess, and this looks like the perfect solution.

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  8 років тому +1

      The waterase inks like plexiglass and lexan.
      However, many white boards are "melamine". They can bead up on some of the melamine writing surfaces that are generally used with chemical (aka, not water based) solvent inks. Once the administration installs them, chemical solvent inks become a requirement.
      The goal of waterase inks was to avoid the need for those solvents and vapors - and the more costly disposable nature of those marking pens, but they still function most effectively on plexiglass and lexan. If a plexiglass window is available...it can become a re-usable writing surface with either a brush pen or felt tip eyedropper.

      They've worked on the whiteboards I've tried them on, and seem to clean fine barring being left on for weeks, though ammonia still works for that. The other surfaces may be better and cheaper, but it would probably be a much harder sell to schools that already have whiteboards.
      On the other hand, I have wallpapered my dorm room with these PVC presentation covers (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KW8G7BQ) that the waterase inks do very well on. I think I'll try a brush with it sometime.

    Where/when are the 308 cartridges available?

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  8 років тому

      There are a few available in San Francisco right now and I believe any US Noodler's dealer will be able to order them starting tomorrow. They are also going to be available in the UK within a day or two.

    Thanks I will look into these cartridges. I have been using your Inks now for a while and just bought an Ahab from Pure Pens.Do the cartridges just slot onto the ebonite feed as is or do they need to be sealed with some silicone grease to prevent leakage?
