  • Demo and review of the Romondes SM601 automotive evap smoke machine. This is a really useful tool for troubleshooting emissions system problems and vacuum leaks.
I show how to assemble it and use it to find a vacuum leak on my car.

I just bought one of these not long ago, really good bit of kit for the price. saves messing around with awkward DIY methods.

I agree, it's really useful when you need it.

The red tool is to remove the schrader valve from an EVAP test port . The extra hose screws onto the test port for convenience.

Right on, thanks! I had no idea what that was for.

is it possible to modify/adjust/bypass the built-in regulator so the compressor can push through more than just 0.5 PSI? I'd like to use mine (when it arrives) to check for boost leak, but would need to have at least 5 PSI as the leak I'm hearing only kicks in on-boost.

Not that I saw, but you might be able to if you take it apart.

Does anyone know what the air CFM requirement is for this machine and the air pressure PSI setting from the air compressire should be?
Also, I think you overfilled the oil chamber. Look under the black strap. I believe I saw a hole in the case with an indicator for MAX level. They really need to do a better job with their instructions.

I'll have to check that, I didn't notice any problem overfilling it. The instructions are not great that is true. But its easy to figure out and works well.

I dialed down my regulator pretty far if I remember right, but not sure what exact number.

@@OctaneElectrons It does not matter what your air compressor is set to since the smoke unit has a 1/2 PSI regulator built in. The max level is on the back of the unit. I just got mine new and it had a very good written instruction booklet.
