From the first time I heard it this solo has always held a special place with me. Here are some of my thoughts about the solo and the wonderful chord progression that it is played over top of. Great analysis. Thanks. To think that Larry Carlton pretty much nailed this in one take - makes you appreciate the genius of the piece even more.

A truly incredible solo. One of my favorites and I think a game changer on how many guitarist started thinking about solos.
You did a great job on the theory and chord/scale relationship as well as nailing the feel of the actual solo.
    These videos are great!

I’ve working on this solo for a couple of days because I really love it, but also really wanted to figure out the harmony and rhythm ideas - so your video saved me some time - really good analysis. I think the rhythmic phrasing and placement is really key to nailing confidently - definitely worth counting it out at a slower tempo before speeding up. I really like the simplicity of the approach, but as you say, he’s using pentatonic shapes but targeting diatonic chords tones in really nice way, giving him a really sophisticated sound, but clearly if he’s improvised it - it just goes to show how useful it is to superimpose arpeggios and triads over pentatonic shapes. I think you have found a simpler way to finger the part with the pedal point too so I’m going to rethink that too - big help. Thanks - I’m going to check your other stuff out. 👍

Phenomenal Analysis. I gotta say (and i mean this in the best way possible) this reminded me a lot of Rick Beato. Quality Wise, but also has anyone ever told you your voice sounds kind of like him??
Anyways, thanks so much for this. I have a lot to learn from Carlton amd this helps so much :)

Most melodically perfect solo in rock, if not any genre. Thanks for the breakdown.

Thank you so much Jerry :-) Yes it is one of my presets you can grab here: line6.com/customtone/tone/3090243/
The only thing you are hearing is a little bit of bleed into my lavalier mic which I did not have the time to edit out.

On the great guitarist topic of tones, at some point I would love to see your take on the tones of: Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Brad Paisley.
    As always, many thanks!

Thanks Robert! Yes I was but the only thing you are also hearing is the audio bleeding into my lavalier mic as I didn't edit it out just for time saving. But I do enjoy that preset a lot!

pretty sure he tapped the 13th fret on that final phrase, rather than the 15th

A question was posted on Quora. What was the greatest guitar solo in rock history?
    The answer they posted:
Off the album “ Royal Scam” released in 1976. The solo itself is a multi-sectional masterpiece with wild, cosmic-like picking. It has that infinite sustain attack Larry was famous for. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin calls it “the best guitar solo ever recorded”. High compliments indeed from someone who is often said to have ‘made the best solo ever’!
Steely Dan albums featured great guitar playing. Jeff Baxter, Denny Dias, Walter Becker, Elliot Randall, Rick Derringer, Dean Parks, Lee Ritenour, Jay Graydon, Steve Kahn, Mark Knopfler, Hugh McCracken, Paul Jackson Jr., Robben Ford, (did I miss anybody?) all have laid down significant solos on Steely Dan records. Sometimes in the studio they would be back-to back for the same solo! Talk about f***ing intimidating!
However, it’s Carlton’s solo on ‘Kid Charlemagne’ that is ‘the best solo in the history of Rock n Roll’. BTW, a personal fave? Listen to Carlton’s opening solo on “Don’t Take Me Alive” off the same album. Talk about sweet! OMG! That’s why I don’t play guitar anymore!

I love all the old stories about being in the studio with Fagen and Becker, I couldn't imagine :-)
It is funny you mention Don't Take Me Alive +Robert B as I just did a cover video of that a little while ago :-)
