Not only do I admire your guitar playing and teaching style Justin, but your whole philosophy of learning how to play songs. It's really refreshing to hear a great guitarist say "you don't have to play it exactly as it sounds" Ok. Flattery finished.
Learnt to play guitar from you since 2011, in that short time I skipped so many lessons cuz I started to play well and now I do my own gigs at Cafes back home with friends... Thanks a lot!! You're awesome man! ;)
Hi Justin. Im 52 and write from France. I wanna thank you for this tutorial. I learn guitar for only one year and your teaching helps me a lot...very clear for the beginner that i am ! ;-)
Thanks for another fantastic lesson, Justin. To all of you who are talking trash here, take it somewhere else. Justin's generosity deserves better and more productive discourse than spewing your ad hominem attacks on each other. As Elvis Costello asks, “What so funny about peace, love, and understanding?” Thanks again, Justin, for another gem.
I cannot find all the accolades to convey what I really want to say - but undoubtedly you are one of the finest guitar teachers/players I've come across on UA-cam. I wish I had had you as my guitar teacher when I was in my teens. I am now 48 and play it as much as I can, and now, with your help, I can play it even more. Thanks a million
I played many, many years ago and have decided to pick it up again. Awaiting delivery of my acoustic. How delightful to have happened on your site!!! I love this song and wanted it to be first on my playlist. Thanks for all you do!
I have looked online for hundreds of guitar lessons for hundreds of songs and by a country mile you provide the best tutorials. You have made me a better guitarist so thankyou. Keep it up please Justin.....coz people like me who have fat fingers but love our instruments need blokes like you. You cant beat the feeling when you get a tune down and it clicks. Again...thankyou Justin.
Many thanks for the super thanks and supporting the channel. It means a lot. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher www.justinguitar.com
Huge thanks to Justin for the investment in time to put these kind of detailed lessons together for us. I've just learned this all the way through (took me a couple of weeks on and off), and I can now play the whole song! I'm about 6 months into learning guitar (started this year in March) and have just finished Justin's Beginner Grade 2 course. My brother (who has been playing guitar for 20+ years) recommended I learn this song properly and all the way through to stretch myself and pick up some ideas and technique. This is really the first "proper" song I've learned all the way through. I feel pretty stoked! The plan now is to keep learning some more beginner to intermediate songs and consolidate my knowledge from Grade 2 over the next 3 months or so, and then forge ahead with Grade 3. Oh, and I'm going to buy my first guitar soon (getting a classical guitar setup ;)).
Justin! You never cease to deliver. I've never posted a comment to you, but I want you to know that I have learned so many songs from you. I'm so pleased that you chose this song to teach us. You are an exceptional teacher. One of the best that's on here. Thank you for all you do for us. Bless you.
Can't thank you enough for contributing to 'universal karma' by offering your content for free knowing very well that you could monetize it with your excellent teaching style. Watched a couple of YT lessons for this song, but once again, everything about your method, especially counting out the beats in a measure, make your lesson stand head and shoulders above others. Your 'doesn't have to be exact...nobody cares' may be one of the best bits in this lesson, as folks like me can get hung up on trying to play it 'perfectly', which just slows my progress as a guitarist. Many, many thanks!
You make it easy to learn and encourage your audience to play with joy and doesn't matter if it sounds different from the record. You are a great teacher. So thank you a lot.
My gawd man..Is there nothing you cant play and teach.. Justin you are awesome..I love your lessons and enthusiasm into your playing..Thanks man you are groooooooooooooooooooooooooovy...
Thank you, your time and help is very much appreciated. I love this song. I'm starting slow and am feeling impressed with how practice is going. Love your way
Beautiful voice leading on this. I went and looked at a tab just showing the names of the chords, and basically if you know the chords and learn this picking technique, it's fairly obvious how to play it. I little more complex, but the bass line on the thumb is a fairly common one in popular music, and if you just know the root it's fairly easy to pick up. There are easier songs--since this video was made--that use the same basic technique that might be a good way to learn this way of playing such as 'Real Friends' by Camilla Cabello, the original recording with just acoustic guitar. Sounds fine on my Stratocaster as well. So glad you didn't insist on Eb tuning. It annoys the piss out of me when someone insists on Eb tuning just because the original artist used it. A lot of us only have one guitar and are doing more than just one song in our daily practicing and playing.
My dad said that if I can master this song, he will buy me an electric guitar. Edit: I already updated y'all in the replies but I'll put it here: Yea, I got it and it's an Epiphone Les Paul 100 :)
I really like that you go through step by step slowly making sure that your instruction is clear to see. You are doing very well. I just need to take the time to practice, but by watching you, I believe that I can learn how to play a few songs. I will let you know soon.
Hello Justin, Just wanted to Thank you for your tutorials! I've learned so much from you. Out of all the tutorials I've watched, yours are the most accurate to the real songs. Thank you!
I am amazed at how much I can learn from one of your videos. My son has only been taking lessons from a live teacher for about a month so nothing really exciting about what he was playing...one day he starts playing a recognizable song that I hear on the radio. I asked him where the heck he learned it. He showed me one of your videos. It made me want to try playing again. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you, Justin, for this fabulous lesson. I'm a life-long classical musician (serious hobbyist level, wind instrument) trying to pick up guitar and piano to play & sing covers of my favorite pop pieces, and I've been scouring the internet for sources to help me. In my opinion your lessons are the best! Particularly important is hearing a complete run-through at the start, followed by the detailed lesson sections, each with lots of repetition and "ok let's play through what we've got so far." Really fabulous, and keep it up. I'm so excited that I can play through the first four measures almost perfectly now (the switch to the D at the end trips me up, but I'm working on it!)! I can't believe the sounds coming out of my own guitar now -- I'm going to stick with it and learn the entire thing. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for doing this song in standard tuning. For years I wouldn't even attempt to learn a song if it weren't in standard tuning. I think most (non-standard tuning songs) is ridiculous. This is one of those songs that it doesn't make any difference at all whether you're in standard tuning or not. I know there are some songs that it does make a BIG difference and I fully understand that but just wanted to thank you again for making it much more simple for us guitar players out here to easily learn how to play great songs.
A month later and what a lesson! I think I can play most of it, but the intricacies within the finger-picking, rhythm and the song in general are amazing. I gotta practice it more but it sounds so nice- Nuno is amazing. Thank you for this lesson Justin all these years later!
Just wanted to say a big thank you to you for all your teaching. While I agree this isn't the right way to learn Guitar, never the less I have found your courses inspirational! I have never learnt so much so quickly and understood so much so easily. This is my second attempt at learning Guitar after giving up the first time some 30 years ago! With your teaching I am so much more determined. I wish someone had explained things as well as you do all those years ago. I feel sure I wouldn't have given up...!?? Thanks very much, Ed.
Excellent as usual. No one can teach guitar like you do, Justin. I follow your lessons for a really long time and you just can't stop to go better and better. Assertive, patient, and you have the great ability to predict doubts or difficulties an apprentice eventually has. Sadly I can't donate as i wish because my money is actually very little, but i always talk about you here in my city when the subject is music and guitar e-learning. Keep it up brother.
I've been watching your videos for a long time and it's so helpful how you break it down especially when it comes to this song!!!! The best teaching style by far that I've seen!!! Along with the sheet music and your tutorial, I'm sure I'm going to get this down in no time. Thank You!!!! :)
I like the fact that you underline that it´s not needed to get it exactly like the record, may seem a simple tought but it´s something to think about :) I agree with your way of seeing music, thanks for the tutorial!
Wuhoo. My Acoustic Songbook arrived the other day. It's great having the video and the book. I can finally play this tune now. Have wanted to play it for years but could never get the hang of it. Thanks again Justin. Looking forward to trying the other tunes in the book.
thanks so much for this!! I was trying to smooth some stuff over with my parents and this was one of their wedding songs, I plan to play this for their anniversary in a few months, hopefully it smooths things over! thanks again
This is really good Justin. I quickly pulled out the guitar to practice, but I need to tune it up a bit.. I might do it soon, I'm ready for breakfast. I hope you have a great day, and I look forward looking through the rest of your vids.
Justin... your videos are perfect!! i only like to learn guitar with your videos or by myself because i don't trust any site instead of yours. You're a very good guitarrist, keep like this bro
I’d say I’m an intermediate guitarist I found this pretty hard to get my head around at first but with a bit of patience and effort it does start to flow and make sense and become easier everything just clicks so stick with it this is a great video thanks
Greatest thing about you, Justin, is not that you're teaching "just" guitar lessons. It's that your lessons are taught in such a way that you can put them to use in nearly every aspect of your Life. Difficult to explain here, but I put your philosophy to work at my work and it did wonders (something akin to those practicing martial arts, I would point!). Anyways, about this lesson, I'm finding it easier first memorizing the chords and then applying the rhythm. Maybe because with my mind putting the chords effortlessly I can better focus in the fingerstyle? Well, a great lesson as always, and maybe next one could be "Nowhere Man", from The Beatles? :)
Cheers Rui. I like martial arts too, specifically Wing Tsun. Glad you like my 'philosophy' though that's probably too big a word for it ;) Nowhere Man is a great too! best wishes, J.
Thank you for providing so much guitar playing content! I have been following your lessons for years now. from the beginning on your website to now with your app! You have helped me progress alot from a novist to now where I consider myself an intermediate level😏....now I find that theres a lesson from you on this song that i've always loved. it is a new challenge and I couldnt be happier about it!
Excellent tutorial, thanks for putting this together, it's extremely helpful for me in many ways! it made me smile 13:05 when you made transitioned from slow to normal speed, lovely. cheers,
lol man you're a great player and a teacher. i totally love how you teach . There's something in your teaching that automatically guides my hands. great video. Thanks alot.
Need a split screen to show the left hand and right hand close-ups simultaneously for this one Justin. I've been going back and forward for hours now. It's still brilliant by the way.
This was one of the first songs I ever tried when beginning to play the guitar and at the time I pretty much thought W...T...F... as I was gobsmacked by the tab with absolutely no idea how to ever play it. Thanks to your lesson I've tried it again years later and have nailed the first part in a matter of minutes. You rock (literally and figuratively) and I am definitely going to check other lessons of yours. By the way the upstroke thingie sounds wrong. Your method sounds much better.
Hi Justin. Just wanted to give you a shout. I've enjoyed your lessons for quite some time now. Thought I might just say Thank you. You do a great job. --Bill
I found the Kindle version of acoustic Justin's songbook available on Amazon. They also have several of his other guitar music scores, there. Happy tunes!
Great lesson, Justin. I always enjoy your teaching style even on songs that I know how to play, like this one. However, I feel obliged to state that the 'rhythm-rap' that Nuno uses is not only on the strings. As you pointed out, his picking pattern is a little different from yours, and of course your method works perfectly fine. His technique relies on playing the higher notes with the middle and index fingers, with the middle finger generally playing only the E string, and the index finger strumming upward. As they come down to rest (in position) for the pluck, on the 2nd and 4th beat, the timing is kept with a 'rap' against the pick-guard with the pinky and ring finger. Depending on how much 'thump' you want, you tap closer to or further from the hole.
Thankyou Justin for all your post on you-tube, l have found them such a great way of learning how to play such good songs, ps, your such an amazing player as well,
Not only do I admire your guitar playing and teaching style Justin, but your whole philosophy of learning how to play songs.

thank you so much for your video :) that was a really great pleasure to learn this beautiful song with you :D
Cheers! the upstroke thing is how Nuno does it - I've seen him do it!
You're just the greatest teacher :) so totally down to earth and kind, it's fun learning from you - loved the part from 30:17 on!

Great lesson as usual. cheers
thank you! You are such a good teacher!
Awesome lesson as always Justin. Been waiting for this one. Thanks for all your time and effort you put in to these videos.
You're welcome :) glad you like 'em.
Thank you! Very good lesson!
This is by far the most helpful tutorial on "more than words". Thank you very much and keep up the good work 😊
