In this video of the series, we visit Stephanie Hafferty who has just moved to her new property and has set up her backyard kitchen garden in no time at all using no dig gardening methods. Stephanie has a huge wealth of knowledge and experience of no dig, and has managed numerous no dig gardens over her busy gardening career, not to mention she is also an author. Using minimal resources and pushing the limits with shallow layers of compost, it is amazing how quickly her lawn has turned into a thriving vegetable garden that is already yielding many harvests. I cannot wait to see how this garden matures over the next few growing seasons.
There are many ways to follow Stephanie, and she also runs many workshops and does talks too so the best way to get in touch is via her website: nodighome.com/

When you originally spoke about your plans to showcase gardens I thought "oh, that will probably be nice". But this series has completely exceeded any expectations I may have had.
The videos and gardens are amazing. But even more, the pleasure and enthusiasm of the gardeners is such a joy to hear and watch.....so inspiring.
Thank you for a peek into these calm and peaceful worlds, especially at a time when so much around us is in chaos .
I am really enjoying Huw's videos in this series and have just noticed that he has released another one
I love how she commented on not closing the loop and keeping the community interaction alive.
Absolutely agree!!! No gardener is an island! ;)
I do like getting out and about, and supporting others in the community
@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading your garden in 5 months takes my anxiety away because I'm moving to a new home and restarting from scratch was kind of putting me off. But, seeing your garden gives me hope for doing it again from the bottom.
@@Gerbera726 that's great Pat, I am so pleased it has helped with your house move
Yes! Yes!
That is exactly what I do. I garden when weather is doable, and sewing when weather is nasty as it is today 23 F, feels like -2F… quite nasty here in Texas today! Love her very common sense!
Thank you Judy. I like to crochet when the weather is bad, or read in front of the fire :-)
Oh how I would love for this beautiful woman to be my mentor. She’s so lovely and calming. She’s beautiful
Thank you so much!
Totally relate to the situation of moving house to a new region, understanding the new climate etc, and maybe getting around to unpacking eventually. Me too. I'm tripping over half unpacked boxes because now is the time to ... because it's going to rain or now is the time to ... because it has just rained or now is the time to ... because ..... Love my new life and very blessed to be able to be this flexible for the time being.
A massive thank you to Stephanie Hafferty for sharing her fabulous new garden🌱 Follow her progress on her channel: ua-cam.com/users/StephanieHaffertyNoDigHomesteading Also massive thank you to Sam for editing and helping to film!:)
Hi huw did you do draw for your book ?
@@keithfreman2886 no I didn't, that was a spam account
Thank you Huw and Sam for your excellent film making and editing skills.
Stephanie is refreshing, she’s thinking about the people with imperfect, pressured lives, she’s worried about her diy skills (fruit cage) she’s sharing her multifarious thoughts and she likes making potions, including the queen of potions, wine. 🥂❤️😎
Thank you Monica. I got into gardening when I was 17-18 because I wanted to make wine!
@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading I gardened with my dad, then not seriously again until my 40s, living in London, no garden. Now in Spain with some land. It might sound lame to some, but someone who is a professional gardener, telling you to just start small and not being too grandiose, is inspiring. Less perfect instagardens, more productive backgardens. I’ll enjoy following your progress 🌱❤️🌱
@@monicacruz4407 thank you Monica, much appreciated
Being self sufficient isn't necessarily only growing your own food only, but being able to. And it can be fun! You can still interact with people. It's fine if you can't or doubt want to too.
It’s a great thing to interact with your community!
I love growing as much as I can, one of the joys of moving here is having more space to grow food.
@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading Agreed :-)
I never grow tired of watching Permaculture/Food Forests. I know there is a yearning in many of us to connect with Kindred Spirits, Nature and all that is good and these Videos are just so inspiring.
A lovely lady with a beautiful garden. I like the way she thinks.
Thank you Diane
I really love this interview. She really struck a chord with me by challenging my perception of being close loop self sufficient. We all need human interactions in our lives. I never looked at it from a social perspective when it comes to close loop sufficiency. Thank you!
Thank you Jordan
Huw, you have shown us yet another beautiful garden and person! The people you have introduced us to are 'garden artists' and I appreciate your willingness to show us gardens that are totally different than your own. Each beautiful in their own way yet distinctively unique to each gardener. Stephanie definitely has a zest and passion for gardening as well as life in general. As always, Huw, thank you for your continued efforts to continue learning and for allowing us to follow along and learn. Happy for you and proud of you and I'm ready for the day when you produce a full-length documentary about gardening and for that potential journey to the US. (Kentucky, USA)
Thank you Darin. I have really enjoyed "visiting" the other gardens in this series through Huw's videos
@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading I really appreciated your passion for life and gardening. A great inspiration as we approach spring and gardening starts back up for all of us!
@@darinbennett3638 thank you
@@darinbennett3638 thank you
Yes! Thank you so much for bringing these people to light.
Wise words Stephanie. When I started growing my own vegs and herbs I started small, and I have had to learn to back off from myself and the self imposed pressures to do more and more. I have now relaxed and if a crop fails I learn from it and I go buy this veg from a local producer. I am just more mindful about what I am doing, how I am doing it, and not wasting resources. If everyone just did one little thing, what they can the world would be in a slightly better place. However the one thing that I won't go back on is eating mass produced vegs from a supermarket, they don't taste 'right' anymore.
Thanks Mandy and yes, there can be so much pressure especially these days with "perfect" social media garden images.
This was so inspiring to watch. Stephanie is clearly a down to earth, humble person. Just a lovely energy to this video, thank you!
Awhh thanks Maya really pleased you enjoyed it!
Thank you Maya
Love what you are doing, and love your attitude! Purists are not realistic and may even hamper the progress of this way of living. You must remain flexible to the reality of the world we are currently living in and the systems that currently exist. You don't need to be fully self-sufficient to make a real positive difference in the world. Keep doing what you are doing, you are an inspiration!😃
Thanks Linda, that's so kind of you
Huw you always inspire us with your beautiful people presenting what they do. Even if I want to despair, when I open your channel I gain strength. Thanks for the these inspirations.
It was only a third of the way through the video that the penny dropped about where I had seen Stephanie before. Uber practical advice from a charming chatty gardener who also knows how to cook and make her own wine. I will definitely be subscribing to her channel, just to remind myself that she isn't just "a lovely apparition sent to be a moment's ornament". Thank you William Wordsworth, Stephanie Haggerty, and Huw Richards.
Thank you Craig! What a lovely quote too.
Nice beds! I checked her YT page and decided to subscribe. My beds need upgrading, since I've had them for about 14 years. This year I'm also expanding.
Thank you Carmen
Thanx so much for introducing me to this Amasing Woman💚💚
Thank you tara
Lovely. Thank you again Huw I’m inspired once again. American
Thank you Sharon
With the gardens of Stephanie and some others, plus your own, you offer a kaleidoscope of no dig gardens. All beautiful, all different. Individual styles that offer new or long-time gardeners opportunities to create no dig gardens of their own. Thank you.
I am so enjoying this series of Huw's, it's a real treat seeing other gardens and 'meeting' other growers
Such wisdom! Would listen to her again, and again
Thanks Melissa, glad you liked it
Stephanie, I really appreciate what you said at 10:30. I have not ever heard the issue mentioned in a gardening video before, but having other places you have to be can be the biggest "garden pest" of all (haha). Thank you for the dose of reality. 😉
It's just life, isn't it?! I am sure the slugs watched me drive away and then invited all of their friends over to feast
I am really pleased to see Ms. Hafferty. Such a personality! Thank you Huw, for letting me know her.
Thank you
I like the way she explains about everything is not perfect. She is just so charming, humble and inspiring. This video inspired me to start my own small garden.
Thankyou for such an inspiring video. A beautiful garden presented by a wise and lovely lady.
So kind of you, Janine
So beautiful flowers
She has accomplished so much in 5 months, but she has beautiful dreams for what it will look like in the future. She has learned what so many of us old timers know, that if you don't try to instantly kill all of the pests on plants predators will show up and take care of them in their own time.
Thank you OhioGardener. Getting the balance between predator and prey is so important, and helps to make a garden look beautiful too.
When I moved here in March 2021 I brought "weeds" from my old garden just because I knew they were the right food for the insects and other wildlife I wanted to attract here. The removal company said they'd never moved pots of weeds before!
I love these snapshots of different gardener's spaces and practices, but this one really got me! In the first few years of a new space there is such a rush to finish it all, all right now, and you're failing if it's not all done right now. I love that Stephanie talks about the fact that her schedule makes it possible to get the work done and that most people don't have that. Hearing that quelled my anxious inner gardener and I'm really thankful I heard that message today!
Thank you. It does make a difference because even though I work f/t at other things mostly my week is very flexible because I am freelance. Some gardens which look perfect have a team of gardeners behind the scenes, or they work there full time, or don't have the same financial restraints as the rest of us.
I love how happy she is telling us that she got alpaka poo as a welcoming gift. Out of context you would frown about it but then I am verry happy for her :)
recently I was given a huge sack of "dags" - soiled sheep fleece from shearing. I was delighted.
Thank you Huw for this. I moved into my property at the beginning of 2020 and I've been wanting so bad to start a garden but I've had monetary, physical (pregnant) and mental impediments (recent death) and the failures took a toll on me. This year I'm hoping to do more and I'm excited to grow many things and unsure where to begin (I do have 3 no dig beds already built at least but full of dead grass) and this video is just the thing! I did shovel some of the dirt pregnant to make my beds but as I grew it was impossible to work them. Then with a newborn it was hard to do anything else and then my mother died and I gave up on life but seeing this video has helped me look back and be glad for the setbacks and my personal growth as I try to grow my garden. It has given me an outlook that I can start this year and soon I'll have rewards but not without some setbacks, and that's ok. I'll be sure to grow my mom's favorite squash, calabacita (which was also one of my first harvests in 2020) although the bugs here like it and I may lose it, but that's ok.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss Vixxiegurl. Glad that the video and my garden have helped a little with the loss of your mom, and wish you abundance in your garden this year
@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading thank you so much. You're so sweet.
Great to see Steph interviewed! Her knowledge is underrated and if you by her book you will see. I am vegan and the recipes are simple, adaptable, delicious and beautiful as well as all the natural skin and household cleaning recipes. Wines and vinegars and pickles. Sometimes watching all the permaculture and off grid videos a lot of people are doing it with a partner or friend or group. When it’s all your own blood sweat and tears and Hopes and dreams and wins it’s so much more joyful to share those moments… I love seeing Steph’s updates on Instagram as she parallels my own journey quite a lot as I’ve recently moved and do 99% of the works and decisions by myself (I’m a full time carer). Well done Steph. Love learning from you and seeing what each day brings to your garden. And thank you Huw for showing the world her talent and passion.
Thank you, that's very kind of you. Glad you like my Instagram too 🙂
I love this video wow now I feel relaxed at making this new garden happen here in Fl usa. I was super stressed and having listen to her and hearing how relaxed and her mistakes Now I feel at ease. Thank you for this video it means a lot and have learned a lot from this . thank you
Glad it has been helpful Gibbie
Huw, these interviews with experienced gardeners are wonderful!! I live in the US but they offer so much information and inspiration, it doesn’t matter where either one of us lives. Can’t wait for the next one. This was a brilliant idea.
I am enjoying this series too, Huw has interviewed some fascinating people

And YOU are one of them! I found your story so interesting and inspiring. ❤️
@@jcking6785 thank you!
Thank you! So encouraging and inspiring. Last year I decided to try a few no-dig beds at my allotment and was surprised and overjoyed by the success. I recently retired after years in a very physical and stressful workplace and my shoulders and hands and knees just couldn’t cope with “extreme” gardening. The no dig method has been incredibly easy physically and yielded the best produce I’ve ever grown! I plan to continue this in my entire plot. Thanks again for sharing.🌼
That's great to hear
Interesting. I think I saw her once when she was visiting Bealtaine Cottage.
Yes, I visited there in 2019 - amazing place.
I’m of English heritage mix and have had a fascination with English gardens all my life even before I knew my heritage. I still “feel” it in my soul and just love your videos as well as Liz Zorab. Thank you for the variety of gardens and ideas Huh.
That's lovely 🙂Liz is fab, she lives about an hour's drive from me
Loved this. Her gardening philosophy is just like mine, "give it a go, it'll either work or it won't!" Subscribed to her immediately! Great advice from a very likeable lady! X

Thanks Taryn, I am looking forwards to developing the garden this year
It's been so good watching all the different people you've featured and their gardens. It's refreshing to see the different gardening styles and ways backed by years and years of experience. All that wisdom has been helpful for us who have only been doing it for a few years. Thanks for all you do for us gardeners!
I've just noticed that Huw has put up another video, and look forward to watching that.
I thought I recognized Stephanie's name as a collaborator with Charles Dowding! I have subscribed to her channel and look forward to seeing another no dig expert's expertise. Thanks for sharing Huw!
Thank you for subscribing, Natty Rags.
Steph speaks so much sense! It's a breath of fresh air to hear honesty about not being perfect, about making do, and about being aware of what's realistic for most people to afford and achieve!
Thank you so much Pru

I'm a busy Mum and I was glad that you have the understanding that a busy Mum can not always have the perfect looking garden. @@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading Thanks Steph, It is mainly Caterpillars of many different species. They have eaten my Napa cabbage, my Kale, then my corn and finally my gorgeous tomatoes. My crop of the season (32 C in winter) has to be my snap/sugar peas, their health and pod production has been fantastic here in Thailand, a definite one for next year. I have learned so much with my failures and struggles, so next season I will use nets to keep the pesky butterflies out :)
@@tinkeringinthailand8147 butterfly netting is very effective for caterpillars - keeps them off the brassicas whilst also not harming them so they can become butterflies.
My dad lives in Thailand, near Chiang Mai. I do miss seeing the gardens there with air travel not being so easy now, but hope to later in the year.
Lovely video! Thank you for sharing this!
Loved watching this Stephanie. I would certainly love to chat about gardening if I was living in your neck of the woods, which I'm not. I have been moving towards growing food year round and will watch your channel for inspiration. I also have begun to add flowers amongst my edibles, so much prettier and nicer space to work in.

I think many communities could establish better waste collection procedures. Everything is all put in one trash heap. I think by having separate bins being recycle bins, compost bins and regular garbage maybe there could be community composting. Granted that might not be practical in really large urban areas because they wouldn’t benefit from composting but even their compost materials could be put to good use with suburban and rural gardens and agriculture.
Good idea. I manage to compost almost everything possible here
Really enjoyed this one and have subscribed to Stephanie's channel now as well
Stephanie thank you for acknowledging that things AREN'T perfect. I work from home, but a pretty solid office-bound day with only a few short breaks to hustle outside and really get anything done on the days when the weather is good.

Thank you for subscribing to my channel Celeste. It's tricky balancing work commitments with other life commitments and gardening. I worked away in July for 3 1/2 weeks (it was very exciting, I was creating a show garden) but it meant that I couldn't be here and the slugs ate all of my squashes and most of the winter brassicas!
