When I think of Cleo or talk to other people about her, I always think of her at this age. She is about 50 here, and so beautiful. She really came into her own in her 50's and 60's. She only got more gorgeous. Her voice, always perfection. The dresses, her hair, everything about her was so perfect. And, she was so funny, especially with John Dankworth on stage. It's so hard to decide which I loved more: I love her performances with John, but also, so much with a full orchestra. From the age of 14, I saw her many times in Portland, SF, Marin County and LA at the Hollywood Bowl in the late 1970's, '80's and 90's, and it was always so thrilling. I went backstage afterward many times and got my program autographed (which I still have) and, despite the fact that I'm sure I was a tongue-tied, babbling idiot, they were both so fun and kind and engaging. She was so beautiful up close, I'm telling you, it was like looking into the sun! There were concerts where she would speak in between songs and sometimes she would say how much they appreciated the audience coming to see them, and how they could really feel the love coming back at them over the floodlights from all of us. I believed every word of it, because I think everyone in the room could feel it, too. Those concerts were just electric, like there the air was literally charged, she was so good. I have been to a lot of concerts, but I have never been to another professional musical event where the energy in the room was so exciting. She was, is and always will be pure magic.
I had similar times, in London especially and later in California. A one-of-a-kind pair of talents, Cleo and John, but Cleo stands alone as a unique talent and performing genius!
Wow! What a beautiful timbre in her voice, and so lovely to look at! I'll have to pick up one of her cds and explore her music some more. Thanks for posting this clip WozzaFraggle!
She is without a doubt a gemstone without flaw both cosmetically and in her professional presentation. Watch her without sight or hear her w/o words, this talent exceeds the very best of the very best...
I fell in love with Cleo's in 1976; the song was Jobim's Wave. For a Zeppelin guy to buy the album, which years later I made a parting gift of to a treasured friend, for her rendering of that song, says a whole lot about Cleo Laine's incredibly mesmerising, and mesmeric, voice.💋🌹
this is now my favorite video of Cleo on youtube...you really get to see and hear how wonderful she truly is...WozzaFraggle you are appreciated...hope you will add some more from this concert.
I wonder how high the heels she had to be wearing to look that tall? She is so petite. Such a lovely voice! I remember hearing her sing "It Might As Well Be Spring" at Holmberg Hall at the University of Oklahoma, when she did her warm up for Carnegie Hall! It was a magical evening for me as I knew so little about her and her Johnny at the time.
For die hard fans: Have you heard these? It's so fun! What 10 records would artists take with them on an desert island? This interview with Dame Cleo is such a find! There is also one with Sir John. An era gone by that is sadly missed. Cleo was the tops.

Awesome. Her vocal line is so seamless.
Oh my my mother was at a concert with her in Minneapolis right before I was born 10.April 1984. What a great singer :)
Like Garland, a little lady with such energy and such a splendid voice!
Class always tells.

LOve cleo laine what control over her voice at the end how she hits those higher notes
One of "almost nobody else" that could be compared to the Divine Sarah Vaughan. The range, the pitch, the phrasing just knocks me over.

Some of her songs were ballads. This one is jazzier.
