  • I haven't done a DIY in quite some time, so I figured I'd show you how I planted up this terrarium, which used to have an Episcia, or flame violet, in. Additionally, if you wait until the end of the video, you'll see how the terrarium filled out in about two months time! I like the screen idea too. I did that for another terrarium ... I think if this were a bit taller, I may have added some faux drainage layer. But as we saw in the 2 months later, the roots really utilized all that potting medium space.

    That was very useful and so well produced. Yes, I have a terrarium that I just planted about six months ago and I wish I had seen this first. I added a bit too much sub-strate so it looks a bit like a geology diarama with all the layers. The plants are growing great and feature a "baby" from my 40 year old (yes, 40) spider plant. Plants for LIFE!!

    Thanks for the absolutely lovely update at the end! The pilea you planted is pilea micropyhlla aka artillery plant or as I call it "the most fussy invasive plant ever"😂 They're really cool because of the way the plant shoots out pollen like a cannon hence the name "artillery". They can be hit or miss on taking sometimes. I needed to know how it all played out! 😁👍

    Lately I been thinking about a terrarium and watched a few videos on it. I do remember when I was in highschool one of my friend's grandparents had a terrarium in a big glass 5 gallon bottle like those used for office coolers. It was side ways and i remember tripping out on it and wondering how they put plants in it. It must of been custom to look like that or something. However, even back than I wanted it and I remember my friend saying I could take it lol. Never did, but gonna try n make my own now 😀

    A while back I went to a local park and made a "native tarrarium" with all of the materials coming from that park such as pebbles, moss, grass, and a small fern on tree bark. Only thing is it all ended up dying but it was super cute while I had it because there were so many cute little bugs in there. I am now going to redo it, like in the video with some real plants that will stay alive. Thank you for this vid it was very helpful. :)

    I have a maidenhair fern just sitting in my next terrarium but have been debating on a drainage layer, I hate debating with myself 😂

  • @jasonharrington7521
    @jasonharrington7521 Рік тому

    In my terrariums, my favorite plants to grow are Fittonia (nerve plants), angel hair fern, and dycranum scoparius (mood moss). The substrate I prefer is my own mix of calcined clay, coco coir, horticultural charcoal, lava rock pebbles, and orchid bark. My drainage layer is either all calcined clay, or charcoal and lava rock, but my main soil is a mix of all those materials. I occasionally use perlite or clay pebbles when I want a visual effect in the soil layers, but I don't think they look very organic compared to calcined clay. I have some terrariums with a screen type thing between the drainage layer, but I don't think there was any point to me doing that. I like my drainage layers to blend with my soil so the water will wick up, and I build all of mine on the highest angle I can, to make it easier to pour out excess water along the high dirt side.

  • @taniarobson7628
    @taniarobson7628 5 років тому +2

  • @debracancelliere4081
    @debracancelliere4081 5 років тому +7

    Love this but something I don’t understand. You made a very well draining soil but what does it matter if, ultimately, it’s in a glass container with no hole at the bottom and no place for water to drain? Or is the idea to help evaporation out the top if the medium isn’t holding on to the water? Sorry if this is a confusing question.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 років тому +8

      Not a confusing question at all. You wouldn't want the pores of the soil to be so non-aerated that when you watered, it would fill up all the spaces between aggregates where the oxygen would be. Also, because I'm using a peatier mix, I would want to add a bit more aeration. Peat, when it dries, it is hard to rewet and then water rushes right off, not getting to the roots. So there is always that balance in closed systems (or more closed systems like this), where you want to still have aerated soil so the pores aren't fill up and no oxygen in the soil. Hopefully I explained that adequately.
