- Welcome to Part 3 of my video series on the Daniel Defense DD5 AR10 rifle.
Join me on Patreon for additional content: / armandgun .
Why I ask for support through Patreon:
I love the firearms community and am thrilled to be able to give back to it by way of producing content for it. I want to both continue my pace of content production as well as improve its quality, all while adding to its diversity (shooting for accuracy videos, destructive target testing, high speed / slow motion, etc).
Appearances aside, I am not just some rich guy with a ton of guns. I had a good job and ideal set of circumstances for a few years that allowed me to invest heavily in building up a sizeable collection. Those circumstances are changing, and now I am turning to the community to help continue to make this channel exciting and successful. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.
All funds received by UA-cam (very insignificant as firearms videos are largely demonetized) and by supporters via Patreon are to be reinvested into this channel in the following ways:
- Purchase and import of new feature firearms/gear: Being in Canada, it is often difficult for manufacturers/distributors to send me firearms for testing and review. Instead, I often have to purchase them personally, and in some cases even import them into the country.
- Ammunition: It takes funds to run the guns enough to be able to get a good overall impression for an accurate review.
- Production value: I am always looking to add better camera and lighting gear to be able to improve the final product you see.
- Range and targets: from more static steel targets, to future destructive target testing.
- Travel to distributors/manufacturers/industry shows to get the content on the latest and greatest
This video will cover the overview of the DD5’s controls, operation, and some of the features that make it special.

There's the critical importance of testing at the range instead of testing in a gunfight. Thank you for not editing that out.
This is Canada bro, we’re going to beat your ass with a hockey stick before were going to get into gunfights.
You're right chuck beef and i love this beautiful country of Canada this is a peaceful country and i hate people that always are trying to fix things and troubles with a stupid gunfight we aren't living in the wild west
Yosef Martinez yes we are moron
@@yosefmartinez9318 Funny the wild west had more gun laws. www.smithsonianmag.com/history/gun-control-old-west-180968013/
it sure is, even rain / cold etc. all conditions make a piece act differently & you need to know. my 4 year later reply.
Thank you for leaving in the malfunctions! No one benefits from people editing them out
Speaking from experience, AR-10s are VERY particular when it comes to mags, and sometimes ammo. Keep logs, if you identify a mag that fails consistently, give up on it.
Or, use a hex mag and never worry again. Magpuls LR308 magazine is without a doubt their worst offering ever, it is known to be flawed but Magpul doesn't want to change the Gen3 because they fear it might lose compatibility in Armalite and other military offerings. DPMS mags are hit or miss since they are metal and the feed lips have a tendency to spread over time because of that.
Hex mags have worked in every single LR308 build I have come across. Plus, they are one of the few companies willing to sell you a full sized magazine that is blocked for ban states. This means if you travel to a free state, you can unblock the mag without having to buy an entirely new set of magazines. Even though I don't need 10 round mags, they get my support for supporting gun owners stuck in enemy territory.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj Dude, this comment is hilarious to me for two reasons.
First, for me, Hexmags have been hit or miss in my AR-10, I've had much better luck with Magpuls Gen3 LR308 mags. I have two hex mags, one works, the other has a 50% failure rate. The Magpuls haven't failed me yet.
Second, I do really like Hexmag as a whole. I have multiple for AR-15s, and so far they have run flawlessly. I also, like you, appreciate Hexmag as a company considering their consideration of states captured by the enemy. I bought most of my Hexmags behind enemy lines because of this. I'm in a free state at the moment, though they are looking to ban freedom everywhere. We must no compromise or comply.
Good to hear from other people's experiences 🤗🇺🇸
@@YorktownUSA The reason why that is is because the Hexmag is an LR308 mag, not an AR-10 mag. The PMAG is an AR-10 optimized mag (KA is proprietary spec, but closer to AR10 spec than DPMS). I think Armalite calls it a Type B if I recall correctly.
If you have an AR10 pattern rifle, definitely stick with gen 3 PMAGs, they are optimized for that. But most people have LR308 builds due to the low cost, that is what the Gen 1 PMAG and the Hexmag are designed to work with.
That's definitely the way. Join or die, and do not comply.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj Hmm... well, I have an Adam's Arms small frame 308, piston driven. What would you recommend for that? Like I said, the gen 3 pmags have worked for me, one of my hexmags has given me trouble.
@@YorktownUSA If Pmags are working for you already, there is no reason to switch. However Adams Arms is DPMS Gen 2 spec if I remember correctly. Which is closer to the KA SR25. Off the top of my head, you should have good experiences with Lancer mags. Lancers are way more expensive though, so it probably is best for that rifle to stick with PMAG.
Seeing as the Gen 3 Pmags were designed to work with the KA spec and the like, that is probably why your rifle has good function with them despite technically being an LR308 pattern.
Yes I love that you left the problems in your video instead of editing it out
That moment when your optic (elcan spectre) costs the same as your rifle
That's not unusual. Most people spend about as much on a optic as the rifle itself when it comes to .308
Sorry about your loss... I saw Truduche‘s speech today.
Good job, glad I watched this. Send the gun back.
My DD hates steel mags but runs flawlessly with DDs own and Magpul.
Mine came with pmags 20 round runs awesome only use magpuls no problems
Lancer L7 AWM 20-rd mags run 100% along with my Magpul P-mag 20 and 25-rd mags in my DD5V1.
The Lancers are pricey but they are built like a Swiss watch and worth every penny imo.
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 I have two lancers 20 rds clear for my DD5V4. Works great.
Thanks for not editing out the malfunctions
Those arent really malfunctions due to the gun are they? it was the mags
I don’t know if you read comments on your older videos, but F_€k I hate when that happens. That one deserves another video! Thanks for posting your struggles though
You know what magazine NOT to use!
Also I’m sorry Canada for your mag restrictions
A video series with the sig sauer mcx virtus would be awesome!
I have a rattler and just added a virtus as well. Video series will be coming early in the new year.
Arm&Gun great
I have a feeling the temperature may have contributed to the malfunctions?
I also have a DD5V1 and so far, I'd say it's about 95% reliable. For some reason, it does NOT like polymer-tipped ammo. But FMJ or HP, it'll shoot all day long, suppressed or unsuppressed. I haven't changed the bolt, buffer system, or gas block either. My only gripe is the charging handle. I wish I could change it out for a Radian Raptor, but there is no provision on the upper for the latch. And of course, when they came out with the new models, they changed back to a standard design.
Yep. I would prefer a Griffin Armament SNACH ambi charging handle on my DD5V1 but alas, DD decided their pricey new development was to be the only choice.
Until the new models came out, as you stated.
Ahhhhh....,progress!
I have owned all charging handles
Radian Raptors are by far my favorite
but the ambi DD, LWRCI and Geissele are all good enough to use without having to replace with a Raptor imho
The DDM4 V7 Pro is literally Gods gun in 5.56, but when it comes to AR10s, you gotta go with the Sig 716i Tread or POF Revolution. DD is dog doodie when it comes to the AR10.
I was expecting you using the forward assist when the first malfunction. The first mag release the bolt by itself is kinda efficient haha.
You can slap any AR and it will drop the bolt if it’s locked back
@@Stoptheliars no it wouldn’t
I only have 500 rounds through my V1 but so far not a single malfunction. Running Pmags with quality brass cased ammo. Rifle is 100% stock. The recoil doesn't bother me except when shooting prone it isn't super pleasant with some of the hotter Barnes loads.
Yeah. I think part of my problem here is that I was running garbage surplus ammo. Cheap, but not all guns like it.
Elcan 1-6 vs trijicon vcog 1-8 or vortex razor hd 1-10
Which u chose over the others and why?
I would like to know where you got your optic, and what do you think of the recoil overall.
Recoil is light with the brake on. Optic is fantastic. Got it from armament tech’s site. I have a full overview of the DD5 where I share my opinion of it.
Thank you very much, and love your videos 🤘👍
My DD5V1 runs flawlessly but I use Lancer L7 AWM 20-Rd and Magpul 10, 20 and 25-rd P-mags exclusively.
Ive used a steel mag with good results as well but I own only the Lancer and Magpul’s.
I use mostly new factory brass cased Ammo but ive also put a few hundred Portuguese and S African 147 gr nato spec surplus with zero failures.
My DD5V1 has proven quite accurate as well averaging about 1-3/8” for 5-rds at 100 yds with a best group of 5/8”.
I wish it was about 1 lb lighter but hell, with my Primary Arms platinum 1-8x ACSS FFP scope in an ADM recon QD mount aboard, its gonna be heavy no matter what!
That’s about 36 oz of optics!
Nothing bigger than a coffee can is safe from 0 to 800 yds or so with this combo so all in all, I’m happy!
Good to know! Like I'd said in the video, I had good runs with it in the past, but it was having none of it with the camera on. Not a fan of the inconsistency, but I would definitely be down to try it again.
You should check out POF USA REVOLUTION the D.I. 12.5 in pistol weights less then a mp5. And is in .308!....I own 3 pof rifles they are great guns!
Broke my heart when you said 5 and 10 round mags
You better lose that beautiful piece in a boating accident, friend.
it has compatibility issues with the metal mags, mines the same way.
Sweet
Bro, how do you get all these guns in canada?
I have a DS5V2. I have about 100 rounds total through it and it has about a 75-80% reliability rate. I have two DD in 5.56 and they are awesome but DD failed hard on these 308s. I would not buy it again.
My DD5V1 runs like a sewing machine.
I ONLY use brass cased ammo and Lancer L7 AWM 20-rd and Magpul P-mag 10, 20 and 25-rd mags.
Nice 😉👌
What color is that?
Thanks for showing it all. I'll stay with my FAL, thank you. It actually always works.
I'm actually debating on either a DSA SA58 FAL Improved Battle Rifle" version or the DD5 V4. Cant decide.
@@j.p.4541 Looks like you have a lot of researching to do then. We've all been there. To me it's actually fun but it does get tiring too. Best to put in the work now than have regrets later.
Wow are you sure its not an issue with the gas?
Which of all the ar10' you have shot, is your favorite or can you tell me your top 3?
this is what I am trying to figure out
it has to be fully ambi, so that knocks a few off the list
a) LMT MWS
b) ADM UIC 10a
c) DD5 v3
d) LWRCI repr
I am trying to figure this out as well
@@brighthought11 we both know he wont reply to us ^^
Sig Sauer 762, Custom AR10 Job, and Daniel Defense DD5 V4 308(mine). I liked them all.
It’s not the ammo it’s the gun. I have the same rifle with the same problems it’s already been back to Daniel defense twice. It’s the magazines. The bolt catch won’t work on anything but P mags and the mag release button needs to be a little longer
Is it the upper or lower?
The magazine issue is the lower. Separate your lower and then put in your magazines that aren’t working. watch the bolt catch it’s preventing the magazine from seating all the way up. I did a tiny bit of Dremel work in the rear notch of my aluminum mags and now they’re working
How do you have all those cool guns in Canada?
It did not run super well at all.
Luis Castillo no it was brutal. The ammo wasn’t conclusive so I’m going with the fact that it didn’t like feeding from a couple of my mags. The other times I’ve had it out it functioned perfectly, but I had different ammo and mags.
Agree. I have a DPMS LR 308 purchased back in 2007 when DPMS were an independent company (prior to Remington) and it runs perfectly. I NEVER have problems with mags, or ammo. It gobbles down everything.
Other than Knights Armament and Barrett, I haven't been too impressed with other variants which offer nothing but inconsistent performance.
This DD seems to be another one that has problems and is finicky.
I've seen problems with bolt catches not locking back due to bolt carriers, mags, ammo, gassing issues, all kinds of things. I wish the Military would adopt a variant of this rifle and standardize its parts, because for an overwatch role or a DMR role, this rifle offers some good characteristics.
Arm&Gun why i never run comps
@@Archangel0804 FN sells the SCAR to the military cheaper than AR 10 manufacturers are offering rifles for. I know it's hard to tell based on the price FN sells the SCAR to us for... But it's a stupid simple gun and is cheap to make.
AR 10 is a much better rifle. However, money stuffs...
@@jamesrobinson7732 That is crazy. SCAR is way pricey...I guess the civilians that own it are subsidizing it for the Government. That is bullshit.
Well...the new 6.8 is going to replace both the SCAR and the M4...just a matter of time. The bigger question is who is going to get the contract on that gun
Gotta Love Canadians LOL
dam that four months of mortgage payments for me
track1994 yeah it’s pricey, but their new dd5v3-5 series are a little cheaper than the v1-2.
Dude you're on some bs this gun is the best 308 on the market
Daniel Defense is very picky with magazine brands. This isn’t an issue for any real professional shooter. I would buy one in a heartbeat. A similar story... if it wasn’t for Magpul company, US Military would have been FFFFED due to the shitty metal magazines we were issued. Many of us Soldiers brought our own magazines into Combat vs trusting any metal mags.
Use what works. It’s not the firearm fault
Oh and to support Magpul anymore, they will always have me as a Customer because they simply moved out of Colorado after those Liberals change magazine capacity laws and expected Magpul to ONLY make 15 round or less AR-15 magazines. I couldn’t even buy most Glocks in that State if I wanted full mag capacity.... scares me to think what California has done
@@rocketman3776 Them moving out of Colorado was more of a business stance than a political stance (although it was good they had a sale on mags for Colorado residents before moving, and for prioritizing sales to California during the injunction like other companies did). That being said, I have slowly stopped being a diehard fan of Magpul because they dropped their 100% made in USA product line policy (taking a step towards Blackhawk, not a good choice Magpul), and their Gen3 LR308 mag has a lot of flaws. I don't hate magpul by any means, but I think as far as magazines, Hexmag has taken up the slack with their 10/30 and 15/30 mags where they are full sized but blocked, so people in ban states don't have a bunch of useless 10 round shorty mags if they travel to a free state, they can simply unblock their mags to the full 30 rounds, and block it again when they go home. Plus Hexmag doesn't charge more for the blocked mags.
For an LR308 rifle that is not Armalite or KA, I would consider Hexmag to be the premium magazine offering as of right now. 308 Gen 3 PMAG only work in some LR308 rifles, while Hexmag works in all LR308 rifles as far as I have seen.
Cold 🥶 weather hates AR guns
Is it better than Sig 716?
I wish Daniel Defense left off the forward assist btw. Stoner never wanted that. Kudos to Knight's and LMT for designing the AR-10 the way Stoner intended.
Maybe your dd5 doesnt like the cold

Hi!
Goofy ass Canada magazines
We know you have those 20-30 rounders that you can't show on video 😉
That's what happens when you f*** your mags up and pin them to 5 and 10 Rounds
You would think a 3k$ rifle should run any mag and any round..buy a rifle that runs pmags and buy pmags... That is all.
Jeff Bradley that is incorrect. You still have to have quality ammo and mags for the rifle to work.
@@ACGBLR if you bought a 3k$ rifle and it will not run cheap steel , and will not run middle row and up mags you made a 3k$ mistake.
This is actually backwards. The Magpul LR308 magazine is known to be flawed, however Magpul does not want to change it because they are trying to maintain function in the older proprietary spec models like Armalite and Knights Armament SR-25. Many rifles will not work well with Magpuls 308 PMAG, and it is actually the fault of Magpul, not the rifle. Buy Hexmags which are well regarded as the best magazine available for LR308 platforms, and on top of that, they are of the cheapest.
The sad part is Magpul 308 mags were the best with the Gen 1, then Magpul decided to fuck it up for the military contract. IMO they should have released seperate magazines for the proprietary rifles and a universal DPMS pattern LR308 mag. Whatever the case, Hexmag beat them on this one.
You should just change the channel name to “rich guy flex’s on and lies to poors”
Looks like it sucks, I won’t be buying one, thanks for the info
Is this non restricted?????!
Cole Bertram no, it only has a 16” barrel. Anything semi auto center fire under 18.5” is automatically restricted. Also this is considered an AR variant, so even with a 20” barrel it would still be restricted. If you want NR, go with a Stag 10, BCL/Troy 102, atrs, mac dev slr, or rob arms xcr.
Arm&Gun that was informative. Thank you!
Arm&Gun in your own opinion which has better control and nicer trigger pull ? Robinson arms M or the Stag 10? Which one would you recommend? I really want a Ar10 style all purpose gun. Which has the best handling and reliability ? Sorry to pick your brain. Which one would you choose if you only had one choice?
@@colebertram8482 get a Stag 10 with the Stag 2 stage trigger. They're super accurate and reliable. Mine will shoot under half MOA.
Cole Tomanik thank you I really looked at the xcr for awhile..but the reviews are soo inconsistent while STAG as of recent have always been good. 👌

just screw the rules and get a normal mag
My video uploads would be slower and certainly gunless from my prison cell. I went the legal route and can now use full mags. Range coming this summer and more proper shooting content with it.
An AR10 that shoots like an AR15. But does not run nearly as well. Putting my money elsewhere
you spent all that money to shoot 5 rounds at a time fuck that sucks
It’s brutal. Should be able to shoot 10 at a time, but it didn’t function well with pistol mags. That was disappointing. Working on a way to legally shoot full cap mags in my videos.
not feeling too confident in the rifle's performance.
It's Canadian pinned shit magazines
Just get a POF Revolution! Save yourself the headache!
dam so far you have blamed everything except the day and time for why that gun isn't working maybe its just the gun send it back to be checked out
track1994 watch to the end. This range trip was an outlier. The previous 2 times I’ve taken it out it ran perfect, but I had different ammo and might and didn’t try the little 10 rounders.
The issues were mag issues not issues with the gun. I would just run straight Pmags or Lancers. That will solve all your feed issues.
@None of your Business 337 DD rifles has always been out of my price point. I think that the smith and wesson was pretty good
@None of your Business 337 well lets see if I pay $ 3000 for a DD and its not trust worthy then fuck it I might as well pay $ 1000 and spend the other $ 2000 living it up just in case I need my firearm to work and it doesn't. or I could use the money to buy a 5.56 , 300bo, 6.5 grendal, 7.62x39 or a 6.8 as back up. you know more then me about the ar 10 so what would you think is best
track1994 if he was able to run mags that were in spec of what it is designed to work with he probably wouldn’t have had malfunctions. Pinned mags are not as good as how they left factory as 20 or 30 rd mags
Definitely not the DD5!!!
