If I had more than one BMG, a workshop and proper tools this might be an interesting project. I love building things. One important thing I learned is to save screws for later use. It's really annoying to need just one, but you have to buy a full package. If you have a collection of them it saves time and money.
To be honest only tools you need are screwdriver and sandpaper ( to shape wooden blocks) and possibly drill to drill new holes for screws
Woody upgraded the set since then in a better way. No wood blocks needed now. And a half-moon plate looks way better. Great review sir. Thanks for the video.
Looks great, James! If I were you, I would put the tremolo on, I think it just would give it that last detail make it look like Brian’s
1st today!! Super cool, @James Rundle-can't wait to see you with it in action!!!
As I do with all single coil guitars (Strats, Teles. P-90 Gibsons, DeArmond Gretschs, Trisonics, etc., I screw the pickups as flush to the body/pickguard as possible. I might make some adjustment to balance them and the treble and bass sides a bit. This removes much of the pickups' magnetic pull on the strings letting them vibrate relatively unhindered. I use a paper clip to feel how much pull three is. I get so much more harmonic quality and sustain this way. Yes, I sometimes raise the amp's volume a bit to compensate. So?
Trust me, this is the way to go. Try it. You can always raise the pickups again if you don't find lowering them is an improvement.
HI Great video , it made me miss my Brian May Guitar , as I spent to much on it and sold it for a profit , now have a 24 fret Jackson Guitar , thanks for the video
Dear lord, this is hot on the heels of the comment I wrote earlier below your comparison of the 2 Specials. Am I not the only one asking some of the questions I’ve written?
As I have it before, possibly two often, if I wanted to get this model for myself, it would not be because I wanted to mimic or copy Brian and his style. It would be because I wanted the tonal spread a guitar like this offers. After having “been there and done that” as the American saying goes, wanting to emulate other musicians that have inspired me the same way that Brian has, it isn’t half as much about wanting to be just like him as it is simply wanting to explore other ways this type of guitar can work.
Then this may be video for you. Playing none Queen material on BMG ua-cam.com/video/1sxMiQWp0BY/v-deo.htmlsi=kXmR46FCcvNosTb8
I've got a Burns RS that I bought back in 2003 or 2004, and I always felt the quality of the pickguard was a little lacking - the beveled edge isn't the prettiest - and part of me would like to get a conversion kit. Like you, I actually like the shape of the trem bar that comes with the guitar (it's a burns system on mine, not the Wilkinson) so would potentially be tempted to stick with it.
Your guitar is looking fantastic, I especially like the star inlay.
Personally like the bmg special as it is,
I don't think I'll buy a new pick guard from rs for myself but glad you like it for yourself :)
She looks great! If you don’t mind a quick question about the pickup inserts, did you use glue or silicone to secure them? Thanks
I was looking at them and am waiting to place an order.
Looks lush, much closer in appearance to Brian's guitar!... 🙂
Hi James this is probably a wild request for you to do, but I’ve always loved the guitar solo at Montreal, and I’m wondering would you do it, ( if it’s possible )
that one would definitley be too hard for him
Ya I thought that it would be alright...
James, if you decide not to use that trem
Arm I’ll take it off your hands. I think that looks amazing compared to the Wilkinson on my 2009 BMG
Funnily enough was just thinking of putting it either on eBay or Facebook Marketplace
I have the kit..I’m reluctant to put it on because I’m worried about many years will the adhesive stay put😳
Can I convert an Red Special for and Red Special Super? Btw great video James!
Yes, check rsconversions.com website for more details 😊
@@Rocklicks72 thanks!
Nice vid!...Do you know if it is possible to swap the RS pickups for other standard size single coils like SD Hot rails? maybe some wood work needs to be done...Thank you!
What happened to all of your Queen Album reviews?
I deleted them as I want happy with them. Plus moving forward I want my channel to turn back into a guitar channel.
@@Rocklicks72 I loved them though...I watched them all the time. What are you losing you’re love for Queen?

Great Review James!
Hi James. Was there any additional drilling for the new scratchplate? The only reason I ask is because when you place the new one on, unscrewed, to check the pick-up surrounds, at 5:45, the scratchplate looks pretty much in place BUT the original screw hole is still visible on the bottom horn, outside the perimeter of the new scratchplate! I appreciate that you hadn't screwed the new scratchplate down at this point, but it does look pretty much in place & the original hole in the body is best part of an inch away from the new hole position on the scratchplate!
Kind Regards
Andy
The scratch plate will cover the existing screw holes when placed properly. I made a few adjustments after the video. Ideally you need to drill for the new screws 😊
@@Rocklicks72 Thank you James 🙂
Like it. Do the pickguard holes line up with old ones ? Or did you have to fill em if you do what do you suggest pls
Best asking RS Conversions. They’re really helpful and their expert opinion is far better than anything I could possibly say 😊
@@Rocklicks72 ok sir but I thought you installed the pickguard yourself. ? Or they finished it off
Nice job. It looks classy, more wood less Pozzi screws. I treated myself the Rhapsody some months ago. Lovely little guitar. But I was disappointed with the machine head keys. Black plastic, it just seemed to let that part of the guitar down. Is it possible to change them?
Check the website rsconversions.com for parts 😊 they’ll have some
@@Rocklicks72 Thanks James will do😊
How did you manage with drilling the new screw holes?
I got one gonna take it to atech
Hello My friend, where you bought the Pickguard like original?
See link in description 😊
Looks really good James, do you find that having the pickups screwed into the body makes a difference to the sound?
I felt it sounded better
@@Rocklicks72 That's cool. How do you adjust their heights? Do you just take the pick guard off?
Hi James would you Recommend this guitar and I hear it comes Professionally Set up thinking of get one from Andertons Music
Hey James ! Can you do a video of the Joyo AC-Tone !? 🤩
If I had one I would 😊
Hello, did you have to drill holes in your guitar for the pickguard?
Just pilot holes for the screws
Awesome! How much does this cost?
It’s a while ago now. Check out the RS Conversion website. They’re on FB too really friendly and helpful 😊
@@Rocklicks72 oh okay thanks! :))
Just ordered one of these james! your video is going to be very helpful when it comes in.
Hello thanks for the video! Did you have to glue the pickup rings or do they just hold or have stickers?
If I remember correctly there’s double sided sticky tape attached to keep in place 😊 no glue needed
looks nicer, but now you cannot change the pickup height anymore?
By getting the wooden blocks the correct height it means the pickups stay in place at the height you want them and won’t move. It’s probably unlikely you’d want to adjust the height of the pickups, but if you did then you’d have to adjust the wooden blocks.
Looks great!
What kit did you buy? And do you think the sound slightly changed when you put the pickups on those wooden plates? Or is it just the looks, because it looks really good without that much screws.
The kits are in the description link. But yes the guitar does sound better possibly because the pickups sit higher than they did before 😊
Does this fit on a harley benton bm75?
You’d be best contacting RS Conversions.
Hi James, quick question for you: are the pots in the BMG Special short shaft or long shaft? I'm trying to find the right size for a push-pull modification
If they are the same as the ones that come in my 2020 BMG they are 500k Mini Alpha pots. The whole shaft is roughly 15mm, the threaded part of the shaft is roughly 7mm.
Great video....
Hi James, if you don’t mind me asking can you remember how much this cost? Really considering getting this for my own BMG special. Cheers
Check the links in description to email RS for prices 😊
Look like original guitar👍
James,
Do you have a lock on your tremolo to keep it in place? I find mine to be constantly on edge of falling out after some hours of play, wondering if you have any tips on that matter?
Thanks!
I don’t know but it sounds like it’s not installed properly 😕
@@Rocklicks72 I've got the BMG Special. The Arm simply glides in, however after playing BR Solo it already is about 1/3 the way out. How's your fitted?
Check out the BMG support it’ll show you how to tighten the arm too shop.brianmayguitars.co.uk/brian-may-guitars-product-support.html
@@MikePlaysYeet There's a grub screw under the trem that you need to tighten up.
@@ciaranocallaghan5113 Just to confirm, it's under the bridge meaning I've got to screw it open? Im new to guitar.
Great ..
Hello!I saw that you have a new tremolo arm.Does it fit with that mechanism or you have to change the tremolo mechanism to the clasic one? Thanks!
Your able to attach the same way you attach the original by tightening the grub screw 😊
@@Rocklicks72 Thank you😊
Where did you get the knobs
He's already said where he got the conversion kit from, listen to what he's saying not just watch
Knobs are also available direct from BMG guitars
it looks like 2006 bmg special tho
I don’t follow your point?
@@Rocklicks72 i mean the brian may burns
@@breadnoob4233 yeah Burns originally made replicas and then BMG took over the manufacturing of them. The Burns ones didn’t have the half moon plate and obviously had Burns on the headstock. Burns was also stamped on the pickups too. Other than that yeah almost exactly the same in appearance
There quite expensive
