Jamies Humphries Reviews for Guitar Interactive Issue 40

Welcome to GI 40, a very special issue that we've been hoping to bring you... well, since we first planned the magazine!
Brian May is a unique figure in Rock guitar and he has been interviewed on many occasions in many different publications, so when we were finally able to arrange an interview with him, we decided to take a different route. Instead of sending a mere journalist to interview him and his highly regarded tech expert, Pete Malandrone, we sent Jamie Humphries, who as our features explain has a unique inside approach to the Brian May team. We like to think we've produced the definitive Brian May special as a result.
Also on board is Zakk Wylde, making a welcome return to GI, telling us why he's going into the guitars and amps business!
Don't forget the usual abundance of reviews, columns and this issue's stonking competition opportunity to win a complete set of Moog's Minifooger pedals - in our estimation some of the finest effects pedals money can buy!

LOL
Big necked guitars and fat bottomed girls. I think I'm seeing a trend.
Brian likes a good handful.
I just wanna hear pink Floyd's "Time" played on red special...i'd pay to hear that
ua-cam.com/video/whys-i8FkFE/v-deo.html No need to pay bro
interesting
Kayvon Bashar lmfao
Does it comes with the coin pick? lol
i dont think so
Its a sixpence. Cant be hard to find one.
@@beetleything1864 it's actually an extra special six pence you need for the red special: instead of a young Queen Liz on the obverse of the coin, it has an image of Freddo. The other side, instead of that thistley thing found on the old 5p, you have the queen logo (you know the one - the 2 lions, the phoenix and the big crab)
@@beetleything1864 I'm a coin dealer, I have bags of British Six Pence if anyone wants one.
@@craigcotter7476 It actually has a picture of Brian himself on one side, around his head is the title to whatever he's selling at the time or a song of his (The first one's said "BRIAN MAY: BACK TO THE LIGHT"). The reverse sides have his initials "BM" in script and say OFFICIAL QUEEN PICK. The 2017 version said NEWS OF THE WORLD and had the robot head on the reverse. To date, there has been no six pence pick authorized by Brian with Freedy on it.
Brian's original Red Special has to be the most unique star guitar ever. I mean, who else built the entire guitar by hand? Eddie's "Frankenstrat" is amazing, but it's a "partscaster" with a unique paint job. I can't think of anyone else who designed their own body, neck, headstock, electronics system from the ground up and created a one of a kind guitar that looks like nothing before it. I always wanted one of the Guild Brian May guitars when they came out in the 1990's but I was too young to have that kind of money and now they're quite expensive last I looked. Cool story about how the trem arm is a knitting needle from his Mom, I didn't know that part. I heard there's a book coming out that is just about that guitar with a ton of pics and diagrams, I have to get one when it comes out. Great vid!!
Didn't do guitars but Tom Scholz (Boston) was the Brian May of the effects, electronics, amps, recording gear side of things
It's out and has been out for a couple of years. You'll find it on amazon. Interesting book but it is for red special nerds...and I am one.
FUNERAL BILL II The Edge built his first guitar.
Les Paul built his own guitar.
@@philbee2307 I have one on the way actually, from Amazon. After this comment, I googled when it was coming out and found it was out. I can't wait. Thanks for the heads up though.
One of the most elegant sounding guitars I've ever heard
I’m a fan of May but putting that aside, his guitar is such a well designed piece of gear. I use a Fender Baja Tele and love it when someone designs stuff that gives you options and practical focus :)
What a fantastic guitar. Inspires me to buy one and learn all of my favorite Queen songs. Also inspires me to design and build my own guitar.
Beautiful and sounds spot on.What a beauty and expertly played.Close your eyes and you can see Brian play.Awesome.
I badgered my son to play one of these in Anderson's the other day, he was quite resistant to play it as he is not really a Queen fan but once in his hands he had to admit this guitar is the one of the best off the shelf guitars on the market and he now wants one. If you can afford one buy it.
I'd love to see a comparison of BMG "Super" and BMG "Special".
man it always blows my mind how much gain these single coil pickups can handle. these things sound HOT!!!
Thanks for the review. That's great!
Wish I was born in one of those developed countries (US, EU, Canada, Australia...), that could justify the price for this wonderful guitar. The affordable version is GBP 579.17, even that is rather hefty for those of us in the developing world. But I like that Brian May charges less for exported ones than those for the buyers in EU ( it is GBP 695).
Hopefully, I will sign up for "who wants to be a millionaire" or dig around for some gold chest in my backyard! - even better, make one myself like Brian did when he couldn't afford pricey ones during his time!
Stunning guitar.
THIS guitar sounds a bit SG-ish. That isn't an insult by any means. When I'm not playing a strat, SG is my next go to guitar. It's probably the mahogany. So cool that all the pickups can be phased in and out. Never knew that.
Brian May is a guitarist worth emulating.
I could watch this guy all day !!!!
Ohhh gosh. I've seen a fan last week with this guitar. And Brian has signed it...
Great review Jamie, nice to see an in depth review these days.. I have a Guyton red special the only lefty made and it's fantastic .. that neck is huge but very comfortable , you get used to it and it makes chord effortless. Can't stress enough how this is not just for playing Queen it's a very versatile instrument that's Gilles from strat / tele to gretsch Gibson at the flick of a switch.. Great great guitar.
The original is a very unique guitar but more impressive is the amazing array of tones and sounds that he got out of it on record! If he never built it and used a Gibson or a Strat, I wonder how things would have sounded.
If he never built it? NO!!! If he had money!! Some of the most unique guitar tones cames from lack of money
It;s an incredible sounding iconic guitar. It's the only guitar I have ever seen or heard made of oak.
It's interesting that Guild would make an official copy of the red special. I've noticed that Brian has played a couple of different 12-string acoustic guitars in concert for Love of my Life. One of them was an Ovation 12 string which I've also seen Freddie play in concert for Crazy Little Thing Called Love. In more recent years when playing Love of my Life Brian has played what appears to be a Guild F-212XL which happens to be the model pictured on the album cover of Poems, Prayers & Promises by John Denver.
Love your work Jamie. Love all of your Lick Library dvd's. Rock on and thanks for the inspiration.
It's Late, a killer riff for sure.
Fantastic demo! Thanks for all the work that went into it!
It sounds fantastic and magical...
I so love that king of reviews where 30 seconds is real review and other 18 minutes just bla-bla-bla. Nice job bro....
Queen Forever!
Wow great to see a review from someone who has actually played the original.
This guitar is a fusion between a gibson sg and fender stratocaster!
I like to play the guitar.
Thanks for this video!! You're so good at playing and I can really see how much you love that guitar.
I'm lucky enough to have a Guyton, this guitar has great sounds not just for Queen stuff...if you put it through any amp clean with neck and bridge on it sound like a Gibson 335.....
I got one; incredible creature!!
Great review, shows a lot of respect! Thanks a million! 😉
I hope i could have a guitar like that one day, im just sad because we dont have any money to buy a guitar :(
Jamie's always incredible!
That thing has a massive sound surprisingly. Good stuff.
Cracking review, and sounds to die for. Thankyou.
mentioning the price would have helped :)
RetroSpective you can't afford it
About three fiddy
Jochen Stacker lmao
Jochen Stacker tree fiddy, god damn lockness monster!
Absolutely amazing
been trying to buy one for years keep getting email to register in listing order still nothing...
if you're still trying to get it, you can pre-order it from andertons and you'll get one from the next supply
As Mick Ronson once said: I think it has more to do with the way one actually plays, not that particular amp or guitar. The sound is in the fingers.
DGalacticMan Agree, and this proves it once again. I can’t believe all these people commenting that it sounds exactly like the original. The must be tone deaf. And the distortion overkill did not help, either.
Or in the coin, in Brian's case
@@NYPDWeatherman when Brian drops his coin he continues with his polished nails.
Mick Ronson was right but that's only a part, albeit a major part, of the total "tonal" equation.
Which is fine when we're talking about off the shelf, pretty standard/traditional guitar lay outs. Because neither Brian or his Dad were guitar makers means quite a lot of what they did gives it a unique sound, which isn't in the fingers.
Fantastic review James! I have a Brian May by Burns of London. I have been setting it up and getting the tremolo perfect. I know it will move up to my favorite soon. I hope to play it next weekend in a very large hall. I do have some very powerful amps but my little Vox and a Brian May treble booster should do it. I will plug it into the powerful house PA system. That should rock them.
Nice review, but I would have liked to hear how the guitar sounds out side of doing Queen music. I've always liked to the look of the Red Special, but I'm not the biggest Queen fan, so it would have been interesting to hear it in another context, without the Vox amp or Treble booster. Maybe plugged into something like a Deluxe Reverb and some type of overdrive pedal.
The original is such an iconic instrument that I don't think it gets enough credit for what its potential is outside of Brian's sound. Amp-wise I tend to use Orange gear and fuzz pedals for a stoner rock sound, and this thing is a freaking dream for that sort of thing, especially because of how well it controls feedback.
Brian May has one of the greatest tones in rock, but it's quite possible to find your own voice using these guitars, especially since it's built for versatility!
Thanks for the reply. Really liked your playing in the video.
Awesome Jamie!!!
fair play.
Hay una 🎸 guitarra 🎸 única también la de Carlos Santana sonido de mi adolescencia 👈Europa 🇪🇸
You guys should totally review the Ibanez TSA15h amp
Amazing!!! Amazing!!! We Will Rock You Is Guitar Amazing To World. "We Will, We Will Rock You!!" . Brian May Is Guitar Of "We Will Rock You" E "We Are The Champions" Is Amazing!!!. Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody" For Amazing.
What the fuck are you going on abt?
@@hxsm8090 yes lmao i don't know either
Wonderful review of an awesome instrument...thank you !
The only person I’ve ever heard sound like Brian May, is Brian May.
One major difference not mentioned is no gloss neck. They look great but from my experience your fingertips get stuck on the glossy surface when bending strings. Probably why they left it out.
is there a lefty version?
1johnnygunn yes on Anderson's.co.uk don't worry they ship worldwide.
ive never thought of that one.
There isn't a Left-Handed Version of the Super, however, there is a leftie version of the Special
also it's Andertons
NO. Brian May said left-handed people are an abomination
A very cool and informative video! Thanks for your opinion on this guitar.
Actually Brian was playing the solo of crazy little thing cold love on a tele
If only this was $3,000 (£2,950) I have the regular BMG Special ($900, £725) it’s an amazing guitar I love mine, but it so expensive, and I’d love to get one of these Supers
What baffles me the most is, these guitars are quite affordable for what you get, concidering it in fact is a signature gutiar.
Nice, well explained tutorial
Not too many band's or solo artist's music can be totally stripped back and find "real" sound and sonics. Queen music element is all about the Brian May guitar sounds. It stands alone and I can listen to it all day long!!
0:01 that solo tho🤤
I hope to get mine next year. I have got £1000 saved already
Nice solo of "Crazy Little Thing" at 13:15, but it seems like Brian always plays that solo on a black Telecaster.
In alternate universe where Queen didn't succeed/come together, I think Brian May would have become a guitar builder.
Amazing review, amazing guitarist reviewing another amazing guitarist signature guitar, doesn't get better than that 😀
Nice! Bought a BM creamy one about 10 years ago. Would buy this one if I was a decent guitarist...but I'm very good bass player lol
Wow thanks for posting this
Yeah just casually smash out the the bohemian rhapsody solo! Haha!!! Brilliant
Thundertomate is currently not selling pedals, according to their web site.
that tone just made me smile man
the specialty of the guitar is slow emotional solos and bends
How do I buy one, and how much,, hello.
You can only get the Super direct from BMG. It's £3000 and there's a waiting list. I went on the list in late 2019 and they tell me that mine will be ready in early 2023. All are handmade and there were supply chain issues. The Special and Special LE are much more attainable in terms of availability and price, however.
I really like red special but I really like les paul’s
Just add the treble booster and a vox AC30 and bob is your uncle. Crazy little thing was played on a tele.
I can't even play guitar and I want one! :)
Is there any footage of someone else than Brian playing Red Special itself?
Yes there is, on you tube there is a at a sound check video, Roger Taylor plays it and Freddie plays Rogers drums.
@@williephimister3077 only Queen can hold the real red special😂😂😂 well now Gwilym Lee 👁👄👁
wow!
Can we not get a vox and an Attenuator, we would still get close
Beautiful, but too rich for my blood. I'll be happy with the Special, when I finally decide I don't suck that much to own such a legendary guitar :)
It really bothers me that one of the pickguard screws is in the wrong place.....
what is the difference between the regular special and the super? why does the super cost nearly 2000 pounds extra?
This makes me want to buy one of these guitars now!
Six pence is hard to play with
I'm actually considering a Green Special too. Can you still get the replica, Addison pickups you put in your Green Specia? If so, where from?
i have been waiting for years and years / put my name and email on the waiting list maybe 7 years ago and again 3 years ago and absolutely nothing!
you sound good mate.
Heard the tuning on these can be fairly poor. And within a few bars the b string was out. Not sure why he didn't quickly tune it back in🤔
Can't deny the tones though!
Any idea if these will ever be available again?
What clear coat did the original red special have? If anyone knows
Harley Benton did one but that was stamped on wasnt it ???
If in the Philippines has a replicate of that guitar??
Ironically, you’d think I would be tempted by the Guild version of this model since I’ve got a pair of Guild acoustic guitars in my possession. The way they were described here, I’m not so sure.
Tell me, how are the economy versions of this model, comparing with the ones that enter the four figure price range? Do they hold her tuning when you use the whammy bar?
Does it come with a free pick?
Hola
Great video! :)
+Ray Reilly T^hanks man!! Jamie
Why are the strings so stretchy?
Pipsta the combination of 0.09 strings and the shorter Scale length Makes the strings appear “stretchy”
@@lukasjohansen_4 thanks :)
Pipsta ;)
Nice 👍🎸
Do you know what was the original dark fretboard made of?
it's mahogany fireplace neck with dark matter fret board glued on with gluons and interplanetary space dust.
Am I the only one bothered by the flat high E?
It looks like you are............🤔
Im a bit worried that the neck will be too long and too thick so that it is uncomfortable to play, should I be worried about that?
