To anyone new to this game or anyone watching that would just like some tips for their playthrough I'll list some things I wish I knew when I was playing & I'll keep this spoiler free so no worries. (I completed the game solo) There's one complaint your gonna hear right away from anyone's that played is that the difficulty feels unbalanced, so to start on the right track play with 4 characters from the beginning. Weather your playing solo or with friends make sure you use 4 characters for every mission. This can seem pretty daunting especially solo but trust me if you don't you'll wish you did. There are several reasons for this but mainly cause it will give you more time to interact with every bit of terrain (yes everything, chests trees wells etc. & different characters will have different outcomes with what they interact with so try different tactics) for unlocking recipes/abilities/upgrades. Another tip would be to learn very early about "impeding" this is gonna make things a lot easier cause if enemy's cant get passed a couple of your characters that will allow your other characters more freedom to open chests or in the very least make it easier to attack with ranged weapons. Also in the beginning you should decide about how your going to play and stick to that threw your whole campaign. It tells you in the rules that when you make enemy movements you don't have to specifically make their actions make your game harder but I wanted to play more cinematically & didn't want the enemies to be dumb so I made sure all their movements were for a reason and the best choice from their perspective. House rule options: You might find that some of the rules either would make more sense another way or maybe the rules isn't very clear in the first place, so when this happens feel free to make changes as you see fit. An example of this would be with the underlays, I didn't like the rules of the poison tiles & movement cause if you step on something that poisons you would it really matter at that point to take some sort of damage again multiple times just for walking on the same poison. I didn't think so, so I made a rule that you were poisoned walking into it but not every step. Another rule I made was I quickly realized that your xp doesn't go up fast enough to really benefit you during your playthrough and it forces you to choose which skills you want to use prior to every quest. You might even beat the game without ever seeing certain skills going by their rules, so I played that I was able to use all the skills I wanted as long as they were unlocked first & belonged to that character. (wouldn't make sense to have Brynn using Kehli's skills) This is a really fun game but realize it is on the long side, my playthrough was over 100 hours. This will probably be a lot shorter with 4 players instead of playing solo like I did & having to manage multiple characters at once. And one last piece of advice is the last mission is hard...more like very hard......more like extremely hard lol so keep that in mind going into it. Have fun :)
I love this game after watching you two play it! I bought it and am now watching again to learn better how to play it. I’ll be taking it on family vacation soon!
if a game just came out and there are reviews (10 mins or less) showcasing a game, I tend to ignore it. I use this for kickstarter too. I prefer youtube channels that do actual playthroughs. playthroughs show actual gameplay which I personally prefer. This is why I tend to follow channels like this and jongetsgames.
Regarding protecting the cardboard terrain; Mod Podge can be brushed on and works likes glue, helping lock down the assembly. It will not damage or cause the printing to run and comes in gloss or matte finish...and it's very inexpensive!
Great play through! I watched while you were live. I really enjoyed this game and I’m glad some people are giving it a fair chance. You are spot on with the Gloomhaven comparison. Two completely different games with completely different styles. Worth having both in the collection. Hopefully others give this game a chance. Take care!
1 week into the craze and you're still the only channel to sink your teeth in for a real overview - kudos. Games like this definitely need to get the time put in.
How many playthroughs will the diagonal movement be an issue? 3:55:00 when Mel was moving out of the water she forgot to move diagonally. But then how much will it mess with you in Middara?
At around 1:41:00 as you were setting up the first map tiles is there a reverse side to the tile? The app looked like dirt with stones and the tile you had on your table looked like a wooden floor.
Yes your heads were down building the new room when the pledge came in 5:00:00. I am wondering if the weaknesses will be to the more specialized types of damage (fire, cold, or whatever) and not basic weapon damage? It will be cool to discover this as you play.
At this point I think they should offer an in app purchase option to unlock the whole game digitally. There's so little relevance of the actual board game components that I could live without them and simply enjoy this as a digital game.
Thanks for acknowledging the set-up. I had concerns because I wasn't sure how much got set up right at the start. I have kind of a weird question- are the minis pre-assembled? I'm kind of tired of my board games coming with minis that need 10 hours of assembly haha. I get enough of that in my war-games.
The character and monster figures are one-piece (with the exception of the Centurion Hybrid)...the sculpts are probably the best ever FFG minis, with exceptional detail and the material is harder and more paint-friendly than figures previous version of Descent or Mansions of Madness.
This game is awesome! ! People were more concerned with what was is in the box than the actual scope of this DC...where with other games they don't play past a quest or 2...calling it a 10 .lol searching trees! Picking fruit! Exploration! ! An app that helps keep track of everything going on...So much depth here.... Very thematic...This game is going to be the sleeper hit of the year! Can't wait for it to arrive! Fantasic job with this live playthrough
Thank you for playing Decent, I brought this game and found it hard to understand the rules so I'm cheating by watching your videos lol. We played for 9 hours the other day and loved it, still dont understand the rules lol but loving it
I downloaded the app on my iPad and I can’t see the font either - it’s too small and not differentiated enough from the background. Sigh. Is there a setting to change it?
I am hesitant to watch all of this for spoilers, so sorry if you answer these. First, as a non-painter, I am very tempted to try GW contrast paints to give my board games some pop. The miniatures you showed looked AMAZING. Your wife should be proud! Were advanced techniques or products used to get that level of game presence? I am hoping modern/ textured miniatures like this game seems to have plus contrast might lift my paralyzing worry of "ruining" my games. Second, I am FINE with apps. I think Golem Arcana was amazing. MoM 2ed is really cool as is Descent 2ed via the app (I really wish it was not all out of print). JiME didn't really pull me in as I didn't enjoy the card play and enemies seemed all the same, although I only played the original base box content. How does this feel? Does this have random elements planted by the app to assist replayability like Descent 2ed app did or is it linear one and done? Thanks.
Hi rob and Mel I noticed that you were doing movement wrong in this game you you can move diagonal and you can move onto Ally space and attack as long you still have movement points to move off of ally space and you can shoot through ally’s too unlike Middara
New to the channel, thinking of buying this and/or Imperial Assault. If you have never bough a Descent game, would you recommend this or original Descent 2ndE. Thanks!
Man I was skeptical about games with apps, but this opens up a world of possibilities. Great playthrough 🔥for some reason your voice reminds me of Chevy Chase 😄.
I am sorry app games take away the strategy for the overload player which in this there is no none. The computer plays it to safe. so my guess it doesn't hurt people feelings of losing. LOL FFG turned to snow flakes LOL.
How can everyone at a table feel connected to the game and feel immersed if only one can look at the screen at a time. Or if it a bigger tv, how can a round table of players all see the screen? I’m asking seriously as this is why I have a issue with the app if it’s 100% relied upon for gameplay.
We use a TV most of the time for this, especially of we play with more than 2 players. If just 1-2 players I use a laptop over a mobile device. I always make sure it is positioned for every player to see and hear it at all times. I don't think app-driven board games work for every group or setup and you shouldn't worry if they don't work for you. There are just too many great games in our hobby to worry about a single one.😀
He was also playable in Descent: Journeys in the Dark 1st edition although I don’t recall if he came in the base game or one of the first two expansions.
Thanks for this play through, saved me alot of money. Feels more like a digital game with some boardgame add ons, to much app interaction for me so it’s a miss.
great playthough I think you missed tracking hero damage with the app I believe you enter it in. When you go to 0 health the first time you are slightly wounded. the 2nd time you are seriously wounded. The last time you are dead and the scenario fails. So really not that hard of scenario and neither of you were close to death.
It would be so cool if you had the option to enable/disable voice acting for the whole game. It's too bad they only voice acted small parts. Feels like how Nintendo does it with their games. Makes it cheaper for translating the game to other languages.
We know this, but we have played enough Mansions of Madness 2nd edition to scare us from taking "wound" cards. I guess they aren't that bad in this game? We were afraid to find out. 😟
@@RobsGamingTable hehe , ya. I think they can be fairly light. There’s some cool trinket which can give you unique wound card effects. Some of which are positive.
This game to me is the elephant on my shelf! It's a good game but it's too dependent on the app. It's only a matter of time before the app is discontinued for some reason, say 5 or 6 years down the line, leaving a useless box of card and plastic. Only played it twice but it's ebay fodder before it's unsaleable I'm afraid.
This game is fun and the app is magnificent. People who complain about referring to an app screen are daft and here's why: All dungeon crawlers have to refer to something - usually one or more books to resolve encounters, spawn enemies, road events, buying/selling equipt., etc. So either way, you're referring to something else besides the board and figures. The app just makes it faster, and it does all the chores and most of the bookkeeping for you. The best part is how it handles the fog of war. It's so effortless and exciting.
The artwork and the amount of content vs the pricing point are a huge turnoff. I felt JIME was $60 on cardboard and $30 for the app (at retail pricing). Descent has less physical content, so let’s assume $50 for that part. That means we’re paying $90 retail for the app. I can buy 2 AAA video games, or even Gloomhaven on sale for that price. Then with the amount of reading with no voice acting…I’m just confused on what my money is actually purchasing.
2 clarifications to my comments: 1) The artwork issue I have is with how absolutely cheap the artwork is. I recognize it’s likely mimicking current trends seen on Cartoon Network or shows like She-Ra or Lower Decks. This just looks cheap, and it is in a way because it’s much easier to mass produce quantity over quality with that art direction. 2) I could concede another $10-$20 for physical content. The box is bigger, and there is likely a bit more cardboard than JIME. However, that still leaves the app at double the cost or more than that of JIME. I guess the real question is what does this app do more of than JIME, aside from some painfully long PS1 anime JRPG style text conversations?
@@BlakeAustin2011 The primary function of any app is to gather information about you to sell. All the choices you make in the game app will record what kind of a person you are. Apathetic. Someone who seeks revenge etc etc. You can actually play the app and follow the story without the board game. But you cannot battle. You will have to assume victory and remove all enemies by reducing their health to carry on with the story. For people who are more interested in story then this is a freebie. There is so much story in the app that it would be impossible not to use it. Unless someone records it all in a readable format which probably isn't worth the hassle.
Disagree on less physical content than JME, and the APP is so much better. You can get this for 139$ and comparing it to GH is like apples to oranges. I personally do not like GH but like this and JME better. GH is a puzzly game imho more than a dungeon crawl, have to figure the right combos for cards to get through a level, else you start the scenario over not my bag, but others seem to like those type of fiddly games. Personally I love Ravenloft and the DnD Adventure games rules simple straight forward and fun.
@@METAL4K-UK And this makes my entire point: why am I paying somewhere between $70-$90 for an app when I can buy other entertainment that’s much better quality for way less? I understand the app is “free,” but it’s worthless without the board, and Vice versa….unless you only want to read the story. Then it’s just as you say: a marketing collection point for their partners.
@@jamos5710 ok, even if it’s the same physical content at $60 approximately, of even $70 - $80 with inflation, that still means this app is twice as expensive as the previous app. Now last I checked, there is no shipping with an app, and presuming they have stateside programmers and contractors (larger company, so relatively safe assumption), then what I have to ask myself is does the app improve the game twice as much as it did in JIME? Because the app price is at least twice as much. I’m not arguing whether the game is good or bad. I’m just pointing out things that Rob and Mel completely dismissed that are highly relevant to many games: quality of artwork and value for money invested. We be heard many complaints about the flimsy underlays, I can see the artwork is Cartoon Network 101, and I don’t consider $50 increase from their last similar app-assisted game in size and scope (JIME) to be readily dismissed behind inflation and shipping. That’s over a 50% increase. I need to see at least a 40% increase in value, and it’s just not there.
I 💯 disagree with your comment about the KoA. He isn’t negative to wild up his comment section and gain subs. He critique mostly miniatures, not to expect perfection, but to allow the consumers know what the defects are if were interested in buying said product. He’s like a movie reviewer for board games. Critiques doesn’t mean negative spirit, but rather knowing what to expect, that’s what he does. He doesn’t review games unless he spent time playing the games multiple times and with different player counts. Although, he isn’t one for app driven games, because he feels that board games should be time to spend with people away from screens. He also lets us know what his bias are before reviewing, which gives us a heads up on why he thinks what he thinks. Overall, he just want to be honest of his reviews without being paid by the companies for those reviews so he could give his honest opinions. People often view him as a negative reviewer, but he’s not, he critique his reviews. He even mentions multiple times he often try to have an equal weight of pros and cons list, also, he has mentioned that not every pro/con is equally weighted; you can have a great game with flimsy game board, but having a great game board is not equal to having a great game.
It's technically an app-driven board game, and the app part replaces the campaign book and the need for a DM/GM to run the game, like similar games in this genre. Therefore, I would expect there to be a decent amount of interaction with the app. This is similar to the previous highly successful games in this series from FFG, Mansions of Madness and LOTR JiME. Also, the amount of tiles, terrain, cards, mats, tokens, dice, miniatures, etc. that are filling up my table, prove to me it's definitely a board game. No mistaking it. App-driven board games are strange at first and they are something you must try at least once. Although, they aren't for every game group.
31:42 You're supposed to be negative as a reviewer. That is what a reviewer literally does. I'm sorry you don't get this. Only in board games is the idea passed around by content creators that you're not supposed to be negative and critical. Imagine if this was the case for anything else like movies, video games, cars, restaurants, etc. You'd be laughed out of the room. The board game scene has people completely detached where they think their medium is somehow special where the rules don't apply to them.
No, you're not supposed to be negative as a reviewer. Critical yes-- but reviewers are supposed to give honest (NOT slanted to the negative) critical opinions. They should no more be skewed purposelessly to the negative than they should be to the positive. They should simply be honest, and specific about their likes and/or dislikes.
Nah, critical doesn't mean negative. It's true that a lot of board gamers conflate the two, but noticing the shortcomings of something isn't considered negative by people who understand criticism. It's definitely a problem but stating a reviewer is supposed to be negative is incorrect. That said, Tom Vasal probably spent so much time harping on the art because the art in this game is astoundingly ugly. Not enough to turn me completely off of it, but it is really off-putting. I shouldn't dislike looking at my character's portrait, and it's especially surprising from FFG since they usually have top notch art.
good paint jobs btw. did you ever play the descent 1st edition i find it better with an actual overlord player. seems like FFG lost the mark what the original had was tactics and strategy.
I bought this yesterday and waiting for it to arrive tomorrow as it was on offer on amazon, so even knowing nothing about it and I end up not liking it too much £2 a mini and free tiles will be great for other games.
To anyone new to this game or anyone watching that would just like some tips for their playthrough I'll list some things I wish I knew when I was playing & I'll keep this spoiler free so no worries. (I completed the game solo)
There's one complaint your gonna hear right away from anyone's that played is that the difficulty feels unbalanced, so to start on the right track play with 4 characters from the beginning.
(wouldn't make sense to have Brynn using Kehli's skills)

This game takes up way too much space. I’d rather just play a full digital version.
How is this a board game? Most everything is done by the app.
The board game scene has people completely detached where they think their medium is somehow special where the rules don't apply to them.
try posting a variant rule in the forums of BoardGameGeek. Sometimes it feels like the only people who post on that site are shills or shill wannabes.
Even if you take around 2.5 hours off this video to allow for explanation, set up, looking up rules. Seriously! 4.5 hours?
Nothing says "Epic Dungeon Crawl" like a 4.5 hour playthrough for the tutorial mission. 😉
i wish streamers would stop reading everything. it is so annoying.
Me too! They should just sit there silent and wait for the chat to tell them when they are done reading and when to click next!!! Stupid streamers!!!
good paint jobs btw. did you ever play the descent 1st edition i find it better with an actual overlord player. seems like FFG lost the mark what the original had was tactics and strategy.
Jesus, I just wanted to watch a video of what the game was like. ! hour and 30 mins later and you are still just chatting, WTAF!
We need some time stamps so we can skip you moaning about other boardgames reviewers. I just wanna see you play the game
Horrible game
Agreed! As soon as I am done playing through the whole campaign with my game group, I am going to burn it! 👺

You should and I know you would!!!
Greetings from Barcelona
Thanx for your videos!!!
it's really off putting how much you talk about someone else. Perhaps move that part to the end or into a whole other video?
especially when it is speculation.
I bought this yesterday and waiting for it to arrive tomorrow as it was on offer on amazon, so even knowing nothing about it and I end up not liking it too much £2 a mini and free tiles will be great for other games.
