I'm so glad to hear that the video helped you! Planting your Blackcurrant bush at the right time is important for its growth. Good luck with your gardening!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm thrilled to hear the tips were helpful. Enjoy getting to know your hot bin-it’s a great step toward sustainable living!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 mum helped me yesterday with the first add to get it so far up. I have a load of hedge trimmings, can I just add them or should I leave them in the darlic bin to break down over time? Having never done it, I’m not sure how much I should stick to the booklet that can with it and wether I should just chop and go and see what happens?
You should be eating winter squash until next April. Looks like a nice harvest. I like to sow cover crops in Sep and Oct. I usually sow vetch and clover which overwinters but this year I'm sowing mostly buckwheat and oats which should die off in the winter. Also trying field peas which should die off but fix some nitrogen in my beds. I always amend with compost first before sowing the cover crops in any beds that aren't already planted for the winter.
Thanks for sharing your cover crop strategy Frank! It sounds like you have a solid plan for enriching your soil. Green manures are a great way to keep the soil covered to stop the weeds and then release their goodness into the soil - thank you for sharing and reminding us all of an alternative. Winter squash really is a delightful harvest!
Thank you for adding that tip! Every little bit helps when it comes to hose care! Removing the ends can really help prevent damage when storing hoses outdoors!
Yes, squash do store for ages. I still hve butternut, mashed potato and spaghetti squash in store from my 2023 harvest, and now i'm am harvesting this year's crop of squash and pumpkins. I grew my usuals but also added jack be Little and Ushiki kuri.I must say thy have been more successful than i thought they would be with the cold, wet weather this year. Just harvested th last of my beets to pickle and put into storage. They didn't store too well last year, so hoping I will do better this year. Quite a trip for you to Malvern. It is on my doorstep but couldn't go as I have no dog sitter. I was de-leafing my brassicas yesterday- ugh! I got covered in whitefly- time to get the castile soap out! I cut out the old canes on my loganberries, last weekend and tied in the new ones. On Saturday, my greenhouses went down to 1.9 ad 2.4. We take our hoses and their tap fittings indoors for the Winter too. It does sav damage to them as you say. I hate the job of clearing the greenhouse for the winter- makes me so sad. I harvested 8 kg of tomatoes today and started making chutney. My hubster was happily sniffing the aroma coming from the kitchen, ha ha. Happy gardening 🙂
Wow, it sounds like you’ve had quite the productive season! Those squash varieties you added are great choices, and I hope your beets turn out better this year. We really enjoyed Malvern and would be great to see you there one year. One has to keep the hubby happy, that's what Mrs W says. Try not to be too sad about the clearing of the greenhouse, I always think a blank canvass to start again - here we go again!
@@nodignorfolkgardener4575 so true but I do miss my Summer crops. This year, for the first time ever. I have grown shelling beans. Spagno Biano, which look like butter beans, or Greek Gigantes. I have no idea of how to process them. I have shelled them and put them in a dish to make sure they are completely dry. Then I will jar them up, although someone did mention they can be frozen. Have you any advice you could offer me please, Mrs W? Thank you. Happy gardening 🙂
The light levels don’t ‘reduce when the clocks go back’ 😊 The clocks going back is simply a mechanism used to alter the start of the working day make the best use of the daylight available in a period of ongoing daylight reduction👍
You make an excellent point! The way we adjust the clocks is all about optimizing the daylight we have during the shorter days of winter. It is though a point of reference and the daylight hours are undeniably shorter, in the same way that from late December the days begin to get longer - thank you for sharing!
I am building a brassica cage next year using old childrens trampoline frames, as if you split them in half you have two domes for the cage, i am making it in sections so i can still rotate it with my crops😊
Hi Barry and Mrs w. Good tip about stop watering tomatoes the temperature are dropping up here. Going to get cabbages in the greenhouse this week you would not believe it we got about 3or 4 ton of woodchip last week I got aleast about 60 bara fulls had to new combe boiler that.set back 2 600.pounds never mind well Barry and Mrs w hope you enjoyed weekend bye for now mate stay safe
Good tips, thanks for that, I will be picking the last of my toms tomorrow and making a few jars of green tomato chutney, will be saving one jar of that for next years produce show! 👍
Thank you for your question! I'd love to help you out with garlic planting. Varieties like Solent White and Mersley White' are fantastic options that we love!
Thank you for your question! It's always exciting to share gardening tips. Overwintering can really extend your growing season, so I’d recommend trying some cold-hardy plants! Things like kale, spinach, carrots, onions and salad onions!
I put salad trays in the greenhouse for over winter, i brodcast a packet of mixed lettuce over a tray every two to three weeks, and before long, by the time you get to the end of them your first tray is ready to harvest again, you could even do micro greens aswell like peas ect👌
Well done on your kuri squash, I've got a few this year but not quite as impressive as yours. I'm wondering what you clean your polytunnel and greenhouse with. Soapy water or something special?
Thank you so much Ken! I’m glad you liked the kuri squash. For cleaning, I typically use soapy water; it works wonders while keeping things eco-friendly! But I was given something at Malvern to try so stay tuned to see how it goes!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Clare! I'm glad you found the video helpful. You can prune your blueberries any time between November and March while the plant is dormant. But for best results late Feb or early March when it is easier to distinguish between the fruit buds and leaf buds!
Just watched your video...better late than never. Thank you for your excellent tips 👍🏽. I don't understand how clocks going back reduce daylight? Please can you explain to this confused woman. Thank you.
I'm glad you found the tips helpful! When we turn the clocks back in the UK, it shifts our schedule so that we have more daylight in the morning and less in the evening. By December it will not get sunrise will be 7.57 and sunset will be 15.51. Not very many daylight hours. It's all about how we manage our time with the daylight!
Yes, Barry now is a great time to plant garlic! It allows for a nice head start for a bountiful harvest next season. Ours will go in within the next two weeks and we shall be filming it you want to do it at the same time!
