I had 6 trees that needed to be removed from our property. First estimate said couldn’t make any money on the job an hill was steep. He d obviously didn’t come back second group was two old guys saying oh yes we can do this piece of cake. Never came back with estimate. Wouldn’t have hired him even if he did. Finally Had a professional came by. Had insurance workman comp for his workers. Had the right equipment. Yes it was a chunk of bills. They made six trees disappear in a morning. Had the crane to get over the hill. Made it look easy. No one hurt. And left my property safe and clean. Professionals need to be paid for there pro service.

Should keep in mind not everyone has all the big equipment and that does not mean they arent professional... i do great work without all that stuff but i also dont bite off more than i can chew either a 4 ft across oak tree is out my capabilitys but also have a friend i work with sometimes that has buckets chippers and skid steer that i call in on those jobs 😉 have a good day fellas

@@joshuap7501 very true I no a couple tree companies that have all the equipment but they still call me in on some of the difficult stuff not saying I'm some God of tree work or something lol but I can hold my own an figure out stuff. Always trying to learn an inprove tho it become kinda of a life style in a way. Anyway my point is don't just assume because a one company has shiny equipment an another guy has a old dump truck an old chipper that he isn't any less capable of doin a good job. You would be surprised at the amount of guys that can pull up in a car full of climbing gear an actually be the guy who the bigger company calls to do the hardest jobs . Yes there are half ass Harry out there as well but don't always judge a book by its cover what I was getting at. Hell look a Bucking billy ray he a tree man threw an threw but shows up in a old school Ford with old school saws but can do more than alot guys out there today . I actually used to work with a company that the owner had brand new everything the best of the best im talking millions in equipment come to find out he new nothing about tree work. He had got busted in the 80s with tractor trailer truck full off weed did 20 years in jail got out an still had alot of money. Now I didn't know this when I started working with him but it didn't take me long to figure out he didn't know much. He was biker kind of guy an had that alpha male ego thing lol. Iv run into a few tree guys that have that same mentality so didn't really bother me. I can have a alpha male personality myself sometimes an with all the dangers an hard work of this job It can be a good thing to atleast be confident but my point is he was the most dangerous guy iv ever worked with an I quite for my own safety. I heard ab I 7t a guy who got crushed by a log working for him an he had a couple other accidents. I would never want him to work on my property but if you just met the guy an saw the trucks an equipment you would think that's the company I want to hire. He had a bucket truck with the lift on the body 15 years ago now he had a crane , terminator chipper with a arm ,smaller bandit with a cable most the saws were brand new an ported. Equipment wise it was a tree man wet dream. Hell even his daily driver truck was this international but it had pickup bed with 5th wheel . That truck nuts btw . But don't judge a book by its cover I was a way better tree guy an had nothing but a pickup truck an climbing gear. Oh btw that guy who got crushed by a log is still not normal to this day it broke his back an the guy can barely walk don't think he ever worked again. I heard a story that owner was debating on calling a ambulance or not . Basically he would of ended up in some car crash or something on his way home from work. Real scumbag ...but looked like an talked like the man you want to do your job. So please ppl don't judge ppl by only appearances

I feel this one. Especially the end. My mother was a single parent and worked two jobs for a long time to keep me fed and not needing anything. My grandfather who built his own mechanic shop in 1955 had all us grandkids at one time or another learning how to take care of our own vehicles. I lived in that garage and became who I am today because of him and my uncle!!
I still turn wrenches for a living and I am learning something new from you and a few others. Thanks again for sharing!!!

I should of watched this video before I did a small tree job this morning. I'm 65. I cut down and bucked four pine trees in 3.5 hours. I took two 10 minute breaks. Granted these trees are tiny compared to your west coast trees. Tallest one was 30 feet.
I didn't charge for the pain I felt in my knuckles after I got home. We should be able to charge for pain felt after the job's over or the following day LOL. It hurt to hold my cellphone. So, I took a shower and a nap. Now it's 11pm and I can hold my cellphone, watch your video and leave a lengthy comment. So, when your back is hurting, that's your back begging for a nap.
    Be kind to your back.
Most importantly I hope your mother enjoyed a wonderful birthday.
PS...Evan graciously let me exchange my large saddle for a medium which fits much better.
I'm excited to try climbing. I hope my body can keep up with my brain. Blessings brother.

Hey August, that was a great advice… “price it the way you want to with freedom with a morality.”
Reminds me of some Bible verses… “…Only use not your liberty for an occasion to the flesh….” Also, I’d like to say this…..I’m a Bible believer missionary in a foreign country… and it is Saturday 7pm now while I’m watching this… and you have given me a good idea for a preaching in our church tomorrow. Thank you….

You childhood put the oak in your bones, and the humble in your spirit…most folks now are acting entitled and are made of tofu and rice-paper…so it seems. Im a strong believer in being fair to everyone and try to charge everyone the same, wether they live in a million dollar house or a $200k house (well maybe Ill charge the poor guy a little less, but that seems fair). I started watching you now about 2-3 weeks ago and I really enjoy the professional work you do. It’s great to see you and know you are a saved man who knows the Lord . I was a Logger about 50 years also a pastor of a little country church. I’m now 76 and would still be logging if my body would let me being I’m crippled up a lot some from being hurt but mostly a shotgun blast to my right hip at very close range about 2’ feet from the barrel of 12ga when I was 13 . I live in country upstate NY close to Adirondack mountains. Hunting was a way of life so I was hunting when the other boy shot me any way my other hip is fake and I have wore it out logging so I had to sell out. I did a few tree jobs but I being a logger always said you guys are surgeons but me a butcher LOL. I made good living tuning at one time 2 separate crews my 2 sons 1 and me the other.I really watch you for I still get a little bit of that adrenaline when watching and I like your honesty and professionalism. Enjoy keep the sawdust flying. Oh yeah I love husky saws and equipment. My main trees red & white oak hard maple white ash soft wood white pine & hemlock along with other species

This is what I do in the morning before getting out of bed. I raise my right leg bent at the knee, hold that position for 2-3 minutes clasping my hands over the knee. Do this with each leg for 2 to 5 reps. The next one is to lay flat on the back, then bend both knees with feet flat on the bed, then arch your back, hold for 1-2 minutes. Do 5 reps, slowly build up to 10, do it each morning, it helps the lower back. Best to remove the pillow before doing this.

Like hearing stories about your parents... must have been awesome up in Alaska... Sometimes you don't realize it, until you're older and looking back at it. My Mom's 91 now, and Dad passed years ago at 88, we had a 10 acre farm here in the Valley. Way different life-style in those days... shortly after WWII, and you just learned to do whatever needed to be done instead of calling the pro. Thanks for sharing!!

I'm old and haven't done something like adjusting the linkage on the tranny in 50+ years, but if I remember, it's pretty simple. The linkage is under the hood I think, and you just loosen the nut and adjust it where it needs to be, and re-titghten the nut. It might have some adjustment next to the tranny, but honestly I cannot remember. But, I think it was a simple thing to do if that interests you. That way, it will be in the gear that it says it is in. It's a 2-person job, so one can select the gear while the other adjusts the linkage to correspond to the gear indicator.
Love the videos. I hope you guys are paid well for what you do.

    Happy birthday Ellen!
Good concept on charging your moral prize. You have to know how to judge your worth to their pockets well being.
You have to look out for your clients (not accounts) , and for your team.
I haven’t been on the channel too long , but I like the way you include people watching.
    Have a great Week

I didn't want to watch this one because it was so long. I ignored it for a week because of that. Today was my first day off in about three weeks and I thought, what the hay, I can skip through the boring parts. Turned out I didn't skip a thing. Glad I took the time to listen to some wisdom, glad you took the time to speak some truth, spread some sanity and wish your Mom a happy birthday. My Mom turns 90 next week, btw, so resonance with that. I'll watch your next long one without reservation.

I think you hit the nail on the head with describing the work as an imposition and charging accordingly. The NASCLA contractors manual goes in to a degree of detail about pricing no matter what your contracting specialty is and says something along the lines of your work should be the cost of everything that will cost you money to do the work, your wages, contingencies and a realistic percentage (I believe the manual says something along the lines of 10-20%) that'll be "profit." Unsavory contractor types (and those that aren't) may not understand this principle and ballpark their figures because they might not know their job well enough to get accurate figures when bidding.
While NASCLA isn't the end all be all it does help to place things in to perspective for new contractors and teaches how honesty and integrity in business is always the best policy. For home owners, get your estimates in writing. Good contractors break down their quotes in very clear ways that are client friendly and help make our clients feel at ease about why this business is as expensive as it is.
