  • Following on from my last "Linux DaVinci Resolve Project Server", I've made some HUGE improvements to my native Linux DaVinci Resolve Project Server software (aka "Studio Server"), watch along in this video as I demonstrate the powerful features and how you can get it up and running!
    "Studio Server" now comes as a self-contained (third-party, Dockerised) DaVinci Resolve Project Server that I'ved developed, it comes complete with a web management interface, support for easily backing up and restoring projects to and from Cloud Storage services (such as OneDrive, GoogleDrive, NextCloud etc), support for scripted hooks and can be installed directly onto any NAS (such as TrueNAS, UnRAID, Synology and QNAP) or a Linux, Mac or Windows server that supports Docker!
    If you don't have Docker installed just yet, this video also includes a quick tutorial at the end of it - "How to install Docker on a Ubuntu Server" - so you can follow along and easily set yourself (or your company/team) with a central DaVinci Resolve Project Server with a painless backup solution too!

    Man, I just have to thank you for this. I've been running it for a couple of weeks now in Docker. It runs flawlessly, so well I forget that it's even there and after a system restart, it springs back to life as it should. Backups happen like clockwork. Absolute bang up job in every way. This is the most seamless way to run a few Resolve machines across a network that I've found so far. Stuff like this makes Resolve the greatest collaborative NLE platform out there.

    I created a Win11 VM and installed the official software, and after 30 minutes of trying to figure out why it wasn't working and connecting, I found this project, which seems to work incredibly well and runs on Docker (so no need for Windows or macOS), ideal for my Proxmox server... I'm beyond surprised that this is not the official way to do it.
    AMAZING work, thank you so much

    There is something I want to ask, how do you make an auto backup with the *.backup extension?
    So, if something happens to the Docker container or server, I can still restore it to the local database in Davinci Resolve. Thank You

    Great program and works well with my synology NAS. Thanks so much for the great work!! One question, would you know how to gain access to the studio-server outside your local LAN. I've been using cloudflare tunnels with all my other program on my synology and they work fine but for some reason it can't get access to studio-server.

    Thank you so much for creating this... and for making this tutorial. Just btw the mkdir part wasn't obvious from the written instructions, but I do have a habbit of skimming!
    I've set this up on an AWS EC2 instance. the web dashboard seems to work no problem after i opened the port, but resolve will not connect, even if I enable all traffic on the ec2 (i.e. disable the firewall) is there a configuration that i'm missing potentially. I know that EC2 instances have an internal and external IP address. I'm just confused that the web dashboard works fine but resolve can't connect manually or with the key file...

    Finally got it working as my previous Postgres install can requiring me to update the pg_hba.conf file everytime I updated my NAS... anyway I can pull that database into the new one so I don't have to rebuild ever project? I tried installing to the same IP but couldn't access the dashboard unless I followed the exact IP settings listed in the documentation. Now I have two postgres project servers on my Synology NAS.

    Thank you for this video and the studio server app! I used the Docker app on a Synology NAS to install it. Here are my notes on the steps I took (Its easier than it appears below). However, when I tried to connect to the web interface port, my browser said "[NAS IP Address] refused to connect. ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED"
    I found that I could download the latest version of studio server by selecting the menus: Image->Add->Add From URL and then entering "allebb/studio-server" in the box where it asks for "Hub Page or Repository URL". It downloaded a 650MB image.
    Then I went into Container menu and selected 'Create'. In the pop-up I ticked the button beside "allebb/studio-server:latest", clicked Next, I left the Network set to 'bridge', clicked Next, in General Settings I ticked 'Enable auto-restart' but wasn't sure if I had to click 'Advanced' to set up further Environment variables. So, I just clicked Next where it then showed me Port Settings: 50059 (TCP), 5432 (TCP) and 8543 (TCP).
    After clicking Next, the Volume Settings dialog came up where it asked me to map volumes of the container to shared folders on my Synology NAS. There seems to be 4 directories needed: hooks, database, backups and jobs. So, I clicked 'Add Folder'.
    In the 'Add' pop-up dialog I clicked on the 'docker' directory that was already mounted on my NAS and then clicked the 'Create Folder' button and made a new subdirectory called "studio-server". I clicked the 'Create Folder' button again to create a subdirectory under studio-server called "hooks". I repeated that to create subdirectories 'database', 'backups', and 'jobs' (annoyingly I had to select 'studio-server' director each time)
    Next, I clicked OK, and then clicked 'Select' in the 'Add' dialog because it now had highlighted the new subdirectory.
    Now back in the 'Volume Settings' dialog, it showed me the File/Folder of "/docker/studio-server/hooks". Beside it I entered the Mount path of '/hooks'. I then clicked 'Add Folder' again, and this time entered the mount path of '/database'. I repeated that again for '/backups' and '/jobs'.
    I clicked Next after those 4 mount paths were entered in Volume Settings. Finally, I clicked 'Done' on the Summary screen (there was a tick beside 'Run this container after the wizard is finished').
    I then went to Synology Control Panel and double clicked on External Access. Then I clicked on 'Router Configuration' and in it, the 'Create' button. I selected 'Custom port' and entered local port of '5432' and router port of '5432' and protocol 'TCP'. I clicked Donw and then repeated this for the other 2 ports: 50059 and 8543. I clicked 'apply' and after reading the warning about overwriting the router's existing port forwarding rules, I clicked ok.

    • @AndrewRH
      @AndrewRH Рік тому

      Ah - docker set up an 'auto' port for each of the 3 port mappings. I stopped the container then clicked 'edit' for the container. I clicked 'Port Settings' and made sure that the 'Local Port' was set to the same as the Container Port for 50059 and the 8543 ports. I got an error that the other port was already in use -- perhaps other apps already have the database program configured on port 5432? Anyway, I then selected 'Action'->'Start' to run the app. This time, going to the web page brought up the configuration screen.

      Thanks for your comments Andrew - It would seem that for Synology NAS devices you MUST use a "macvlan" configuration for Docker on Synology (this is because Synology already utilises one of the required ports - the one that DaVinci Resolve MUST connect on).
      The process to setup a "macvlan" (basically a "virtual IP") on your Synology NAS seems to be pretty well explained in this particular UA-cam video: ua-cam.com/video/VGZ3TRAW8Ds/v-deo.html (ignore the fact that the video is for PiHole, just substitute the PiHole container for the Studio Server one).
      Please give that a try and let me know how you get on - I'd love to hear that you have it connected and working as someone else emailed me yesterday (also using a Synology NAS) of whom is having the same issue.... If you would do a write up, or maybe even a UA-cam video(? ;)) - I'd glady include it on the Studio Server webpage (and give full credit to you obviously)...
      This "issues" only appears to affect Synology NASes but a "macvlan" should be the answer :)
      I hope this helps and hopefully you can let me know how you get on (if you decide to follow the simple video I have linked above).

    Thank you for your amazing work! I followed the tutorial and now have a docker container running on my unraid server. I placed the db, jobs, and hooks together on a share which I created on dedicated SSD for good performance and backups on an unraid share for security. I hope it will be fine to keep the first 3 folders ower there. Also, I tried to disable the live save, but it is grayed out. I've read that live safe is forced if you're using collaboration. I wonder how it will affect the SSD performance and temps. I will test it out for a week before switching completely. So far, starting/stopping the docker and rebooting the unraid server did not break anything. everything autostarts and restores. Please continue with the development and improvement. I hope, some day BM will offer you a good amount of money for this software.

    Hey think I came across a bug with this. So when I name a project library with a capital letter (ex. TEST) I can't add it to Resolve Studio 18, but if I keep lowercase lettering for the project library name, it works fine (ex. test). I'm running resolve on Linux so I'm not sure if the bug is specific to the environment I'm running my actual resolve client in. But maybe I'm onto something here so figured I'd share.
    Edit: It looks like as well as this, I am unable to delete any resolve projects in the web GUI if they contain caps.

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  Рік тому +1

      @@TheBearTech Not a Linux Workstation issue only.
      Forcing lowercase will definitely solve the issue, but would be nice to have the real fix somehow :)
      Apparently, PostgreSQL is case sensitive, and somewhere, the Cli is making the role lowercase, or needs to use double quotes.
      For those who have created the libraries in uppercase and want to delete them, the Wed GUI and Cli won't do that, you need to run something like this from your terminal:
      docker exec `docker ps -q --filter ancestor=allebb/studio-server:latest` sudo -u postgres dropdb
      docker exec `docker ps -q --filter ancestor=allebb/studio-server:latest` sudo -u postgres dropuser
      where is your broken library name.
      I'm not extremely familiar with PostgreSQL, but this helped me to cleanup the Project libraries in a test environment.
      Also, had some issue with one db, had to delete it from pgAdmin in conjunction with deleting it from the Web GUI
      Adding a superuser, run this command
      docker exec -it `docker ps -q --filter ancestor=allebb/studio-server:latest` sudo -u postgres createuser -s -P
      Replace with something like admin or whatever you like.
      Thank again Bobby for your great idea and your work ;)

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for your comment.
      I have just released a "release candidate" that you could test if you like? - You can change the docker image to "allebb/studio-server:1.0.1-rc1" - from my minimal testing so far this fixes the issues with uppercase characters - as you mentioned, PostgreSQL doesn't support them and so this fixes the issue for new "Project Libraries" being created in the Web UI (Not sure what else I can do other than to force them lowercase as Postgres otherwise won't play ball).
      I'm going to do some more testing myself too but I would appreciate it if you wouldn't mind testing and feeding back (can be via. email if you prefer).
      Assuming all goes well, I'll release this version as "latest" (stable) later this week to ensure that others of whom have issues with uppercase project names don't fall into this trap :)
      Cheers!

    Can you please make a video with instructions on how to install this on a Synology NAS.
    If you don't have a Synology NAS, you can simply spin one up in a VM using Xpenology.
    Thanks!

      Sure can do - but did these instructions not work then? wirebear.co.uk/software/studio-server-on-synology-nas
      Let me know if they don't work for you and I will do another video (on Synology specifically).

      @@TheBearTech Following the instructions, (I'm not sure why they are in Command Shell) As I was able to follow the instructions in the DSM 7.1 Web UI easily.
      The problem I ran into is the Port 5432 internally used in DSM and cannot be used for exposing on docker.
      And I don't see an easy way to force Davinci to use a different Port to be used to connect to database. Unless you know of one? Because setting a different port x.x.x.x:5433 doesn't work in Resolve.

      @@jhonsmith1117 Assuming you have the macvlan setup (this will give you a "virtual IP" address essentially) which then means you can connect to the project server using that "virtual IP address" instead - this then gets around the issue with DSM already using the port on it's primary IP address.
      I suspect the reason it isn't working for you is because you didn't setup the macvlan? - I don't think this is possible through the Web GUI of Synology hence therefore the need for using the terminal instead.

      @@TheBearTech Ah! Yes I see now!
      Its a shame Synology doesn't let you assign IP to Container in Docker using UI, not even in the new Container Manager in DSM 7.2
      Thank you for making it clear.

    Hello man! Can you help me?
    I work on windows and have problem. I synced two computers with davinci. The programm i used - Syncthing. One device is in Moscow, the other in London. Both computers created the same local discs (or datas) that are updated in real time for both me and him(when I put any media file on this disk, the media file immediately appears at my friend's). After I share the "access key" of project with my friend, we see the same projects in DaVinci. But there is a problem - he always has "media offline". The path to the media is correct. When my friend try to "relink media" and "locate" media on the local disk, davinci does not see files. What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance :)

      Ok, well the good news is, is that the DaVinici Project Server is working correctly (as you can both open and see the same project). The issue in your case however appears to be with Syncthing - You mention that the files appear "immediately" BUT, maybe that is just the fact that your friends computer is just starting to sync the file (and the file isn't "fully synced" to the remote computer at the time that your friend tries to "re-link" the media.
      Are you sure that Syncthing has fully "downloaded" the media files prior to your friend trying to "re-link" the media? - I pressume that is the issue here.
      I would suggest your friend leaves his computer to fully sync all of the media files to his PC first, then try re-linking the media.
      I hope this helps :)

    Is there any benefit running the studio server on docker instead on a VM?

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  Рік тому +1

      With this docker container you get an easy to use WebUI too... the installation on a VM is alot more complex to setup and doesn't come with the web UI.
      Hope this helps.
