*Do you agree with your country's safety ranking?*
Important to point out that I *don't* agree with some of this ranking; It seems to me that they should have two separate indexes that depict the behavior of a nation or its regime / government towards global security (militarization etc) and another one that depicts the internal safety of its own citizens. Mixing up the two does not offer the most accurate view of either!

As an American I could agree with yellow maybe but to be classified the same as Mexico lol? Our militarization is rated worse, meanwhile Mexico literally has to send their army in to kill armed gangs while their helicopters get shot at but sure...America's worse. Just another America bad study at a quick glance but perhaps I'll look more into the data later

I live in Canada where the violent crime rate is up 32% since 2015 and people of my particular demographic are less free, and have less rights than we did in 2015. I am not surprised to see Canada falling down the rankings but I expected Canada to fall a bit farther than we did.

As an American who's traveled across much of Europe, this ranking definitely makes sense.
I remember being on a tour in Switzerland which ended at lake Zurich. There was a lot of American backpackers with us, and they wanted to explore the city, or swim in the lake. Our tour guide was very insistent that they could just leave all their stuff on the shore, and promised no one would take their stuff. That seemed to be a difficult concept for some of them to understand. But she ended up being right.

Here in the US, a lot of Americans see Brazil as a corrupt, crime ridden country (even if they don't admit it) and this is a stereotype that extends to most of South America. As an American living in Tokyo, I think my only source of surprise is how LOW on the list Japan is -- #10! Hard to believe there are nine countries deemed safer than this one, but I guess anywhere in that top part of the list is going to have a pretty similar vibe.
Either way, the contrast between Japan and the U.S. is STARK. Even in so-called safe parts of the U.S., I still always found myself side-eyeing strangers, keeping a tight grip on my belongings at all times, and -- sadly -- always making sure I knew the quickest escape route in case a mass shooting were to break out.
Those types of thoughts simply DO NOT go through my mind living in Japan. Any time of the day or night, in any part of the city or country, I feel 100% at ease walking by myself without a care in the world. It's an amazing feeling that I wish more people in the world could know.

So a country like the USA is getting red in all these areas because, for example, the constitution guarantees rights to bear arms, red on weapons export and military expenditure because of NATO and allies, red on nuclear of course.

As a Brazilian who just came back from Japan (after 12 years), I am really glad to see Japan on the list, even though I think it deserves a little bit more than #10! I have so many stories to share: one day, I totally forgot my wallet with money, IDs and cards inside my bike's basket on the street. One day later, I went outside and there my wallet was, at the same place with all my stuff. Dude, if it was here in Brazil, someone would have take the whole bike together... 😵‍💫 The same way, eveytime I found a wallet or iPhone on the streets, I returned it to the Police station. And I love this respect and consideration Japanese society has. I love being part of that. Yesterday I fianlly met our Portuguese neighbor (here in Brazil), and we were talking, at night, here on the street, outside our houses. I was so afraid that I had to check EVERY damn person (walking or on a motorbike, etc) who was passing us by (we always think someone will robber you...). The Portuguese guy said to me: "I can see you are very nervous just being here outside at night. You will never experience this feeling when you go to Portugal. Trust me!". Here I am, back from Japan, just "enjoying" my free time with my brazilian family, but ready to leave Brazil and go to study in Portugal. And I am glad (and makes me feel relieved) to see on this list that Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe. I hope I have a peaceful time there. Saudações meus futuros colegas portugueses, aí vou eu! hehe And for my Japanese mates: 十二年間、大変お世話になった!卒業したら日本へ帰る予定~♪

That’s pretty easy to figure out. The more urban a state the more dangerous. So the coasts and Texas drag the US down the most with Illinois getting a special mention. While states like Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana are likely in the Blue or at least Green. The rest of the states would likely be distributed in between them all. Note I’m not dissing urban living but it typically results in larger per capita police forces and greater degree of small arms gun ownership per capita. Likewise the obvious wealth gap in cities encourages higher crime rates as well. It’s also of note just our general extremely high military budget also drags the US down quite a bit on top of that.

For instance Canada doesn’t need a large military (one of the factors that reflects negatively in safety) BECAUSE it’s wholly under the protection of the NORAD defense treaty. If not for NORAD Canada would NEED a much higher military budget AND a larger military in general. Likewise, for New Zealand and it being protected via the Anglo-alliance which gives it (alongside its geographic isolation) two major protectors in its region (Australia and the US) thus affording it the ability to HAVE a minimalist military. Indeed the US’s alliances is what allowed Europe to rank so low as well as without NATO European national defense budgets and militaries would both necessarily be much larger as they wouldn’t have the powerful protection of the worlds most powerful military to dissuade invasions from the likes of Russia and indeed each other.

This index is a good first orientation when it comes to travelling and international business. However, it needs to be mentioned that not every person has the same level of safety in each country: Gender, skin colour/ethnicity, political views online, religion and wealth also play a role in the person's experience.
E.g.: I would argue that being LGBTQ in Saudi Arabia makes the experience significantly less safe than being in Turkey because although he letter has an overall lower safety score, Saudia Arabia has much harsher laws as well as a religious police which results in imprisonment, torture and execution of LGBTQ people while in Turkey, people may face social rejection but certainly not any legal consequences for simply existing.
Another case would be visiting China as a person with dark brown skin: Whereas in Somalia, that wouldn't be an issue at all, there are Chinese restaurants, cafés and other business which have a sign outside their door stating that people of a certain ethnicity are not welcome - most commonly: black people, Indians and Japanese.

Some of these rankings are absolutely nuts. Jamaica (don’t go anywhere at night) ranks safer than Thailand (go anywhere anytime)….

this video does seem a bit misleading, as it seems to conflate “safe” with “peaceful”… you could theoretically be safe in a country which is nonetheless engaged in military conflict in another region of the world, no? maybe i’m not fully following

La clasificación no es de los países más seguros, evalúa más bien la pacifidad de un país (tensiones políticas, conflictos internos o externos, revueltas sociales...). Los países más seguros son:
      1.Liechtenstein
      2.Andorra
      3.San Marino
      4.Catar
      5.Emiratos Arabes Unidos
      6.Eslovenia
      7.Suiza
      8.ERITREA
      9.Austria
      10.OMÁN
JAPÓN SE ENCUENTRA EN EL LUGAR 33 DE LOS 200 PAÍSES EVALUADOS

I also live in Japan and am surprised Japan is not 1 or 2. It's incredibly safe here. Crime is low and one's chances of being "mugged" are almost nil. However, when I heard the more detailed explanation I thought that because some minorities are discriminated against, gay marriage is illegal here and Japan has the death penalty these factors may slightly lower Japan's score.

You think Russia is going to invade unless Finland gets in NATO? They have their hands full in Ukraine and after that, no matter how it ends, they will have to do some serious rebuilding and restructuring on their armed forces before even thinking about another war, excuse me, special military operation.

was quite surprised to see the netherlands so far down so i went digging through the report and were near the bottom in militarisation. mainly because of arms exports i think (Thales and the like), possibly also coz we store some nuclear bombs from the USA.
