The Jaguar F-Type Looks Great, But Can It Compete? | 2022 Jaguar F-Type

  • Jaguar's F-Type has long been a roadster stuck between worlds. It's not as expensive or hard-core as an AMG GT or 911, but it's price tag makes it less attainable than a Z4. The base engine lineup was always "fine" but that too was part of the F-Type's positioning problem. To solve that Jag has made the F-Type V8 only.

Kind of surprised that the TT-RS was mentioned as a competitor, which is nowhere close to an F-type in design, and the LC500 was not, which is IMO MUCH more of a direct competitor than anything Audi has right now.

Another great review that focuses on what you buy the car for, and how some of its shortcomings are exceeded by its positive characteristics. I agree that the F-Type is one of the best looking cars available, but if money were no object, my gaze would be headed in Aston Martin's direction. It was enjoyable to spend 24 minutes daydreaming of a car I'll never drive, much less own -- thanks!

I think this completes directly with the LC500 convertible especially this trim with the V8, I would argue that the LC looks ever so slightly better and has a better sounding engine but the F-Type would definitely be the sportier vehicle.

The F Type has actually gotten onto my radar again lately. I have owned a 1989 XJS V-12 coupe, and I currently own a 2003 XK8 Convertible 4.2 V8, and a 2014 XK Coupe 5.0 V8. I have, so far, preferred the GT versions of Jags vs. the F-Type "sport car sized" vehicles for how my wife and I use our vehicles. E.g. 100 mile round trips to/from Lake Michigan on weekends from our home in Kalamazoo, MI, and long trips throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We have owned other sports cars (e.g., '97 Mazda Miata convertible -- my all-time favorite), but the F Type always seems to be too small for even a simple trip to the beach, with a couple of beach chairs, an umbrella, a modest cooler and a small duffle. I honestly think my old Miata had more useable trunk space than the current F Type. That said, I would love to add the F Type to my garage and be able to just look at it next to the other two GT Jags. Because of space limitations, all of my 4x4 vehicles have always had to sit outdoors. :-( Yeah, I know -- "First World Problems"!

The issue with this is really all you're buying with this is the brand, objectively there is a better option for whatever your intended use case is. You get most of this out of a mustang GT or camaro ss for 50k~. Or for the price you get into all the competitors you mentioned that are either great luxury vehicles or real sports cars.
Honestly from both you get a similarly powerful engine, and theirs have the benefits of being naturally aspirated. It's actually kinda sad that they need a supercharger on their 5.0 to match the hp of the ford's NA v8. And yes I get you can ramp this thing up to 575hp, but when ford and GM decide to throw superchargers on their offerings, the hp goes to 760 and 650 respectively. So really for what it is, the engine is wildly underpowered.
Also the interior of this jag is simply **BAD** in comparison to anything else. (I know jag holds a special place in your heart, but this interior sucks) The screens are awful, the infotainment sucks, the button layout and console suck, the steering wheel is lacking, and its missing a ton of creature comforts.

      @markmiller3279 2 роки тому +5

Neither brand is reliable at all. They're two of the worst brands sold for that, and likewise for repair costs. Parts are expensive and scarce, since so few of these cars are sold in the US and there are very few dealers. As for models, Maserati doesn't make anything comparable to the F-Type. They make mainly sports sedans and crossovers. Their one current sports car, the MC20, is an entry-level supercar, with a base price three times that of the Jaguar (well over $200k).
If you're looking for a convertible sports car in the $75k-$100k range, the obvious choice is the Porsche Boxster. The BMW Z4 Is a bit cheaper, but its performance isn't comparable and it just feels cheaper inside, and doesn't look that good. The Boxster is famed for the excellence of its handling and is plenty quick enough. It's smoother, quieter, and more refined than the Jag, and also quite a bit more reliable, with better parts availability. but it isn't as beautiful and doesn't have the roar of that supercharged V-8. Choosing the Jag means putting up with more deficiencies, like the antique infotainment system, and likely more breakdowns.

A heated steering wheel is an option as are interior leather colors. Bullcrap defending the costs to develop a new Z4 or Supra: Toyota is the world's biggest and richest manufacturer and they have developed the LFA, GT86 and next are a Gazoo hypercar plus MR2. Nissan too is bringing back the Z and did honor the Skyline (a Supra rival) with the GTR as Honda did with the NSX. Renault, via Alpine, created the A110 and even if a collaboration was needed, FIAT and Mazda at least came up with differently powered versions of the related 124 and Miata. The most laughable part of this story is that, the next Z4 will not exist, and Toyota may next go in bed with Mazda to keep it alive... finally truly Japanese (as the current one isn't even German, but Austrian-made). Or Toyota should have and could just redeveloped the RC and new Supra in house. The current Zupr4 is an embarrassment and no M model for BMW says it all.

This Jaguar V8 is kind of related to a Ford V8 anyway

This car is pretty, but incredibly outdated, and its sales are terrible.

Jaguar has such a bad reputation, I would never buy one as they are. They look so cheap for the price.

You're living in the past, John...quality is much improved; I (my wife) owns a 2017 F-Pace and a 2021 F-Type R; zero issues. You can see them both on our YTC, click my avatar.

@@CatNMrDJ Quality doesn't look good at all. Look at how small the interior screen is, and all that hard plastic, yuck. New cars from Kia or Toyota have better interior. The few people that buy Jaguar's, do it for the brand name. A simple M3 is better than anything Jaguar can offer.

@@John-hp2hg you didn’t look at mine obviously, soft touch throughout. Anyways, we’re very pleased with ours. BTW, i also own a 2020 Toyota, 2021 Kia, a 2019 Corvette, etc. Happy with all.

Jags have zero appeal since the late 90s.

It’s supposed to be the budget Aston. Even after Ford ownership, Jag still takes queues from the Vantage and DB.
