  • I don't know the best way to mount this to the wall and I'm not sure about this thickness thing. If you have experience in this, throw whatever thoughts you have in the comments!

Prototyping is an iterative process. Refine what you have, make one, repeat.
Also, my favorite method of holding on covers like this... magnets.

For mounting, I would use magnets. Make a round pocket on each side for a 10x4 or whatever size round magnet. Use 3 or 4 for hold and position. I would still have a printed locating bump and socket to keep from accidentally knocking it off the wall.

This is how you get through things. You make help videos and go to forums. Also consider using fusion 360. If i can learn(Still very much learning) you can.

Very cool! Can't wait to see the finished product!

For the light, my first question is WHAT is its function? What if you had a RGB LED that would turn RED when the heat is called, BLUE when cold is called, and YELLOW when only the Fan is on?

Cool design! I've been learning fusion 360 since they have free hobiest licenses. And so I've been creating custom ESP32 enclosures with my custom PCBs.

For mounting magnets or French cleats. LEDs will shine though more layers than you would think. I'd recommend about 4. the biggest issue would be light bleed. Rather than a single point it would be a "smudged" area. Maybe a separate insert that is not opaque.
Great video. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work.

Really cool design, I've thought of making my own thermostat for like.. a year or so, but I haven't really started.. still need to build up my bench first where I had the 3D printer in my last place.. then.. I will maybe.. make my own thermostat 😋 But please "share" more on your project, I'm not after stealing stuff, more like getting more hyped to get things going and also because this is a project I really love so I'd love a lot of videos on the topic 😃
My idea for the display would be to have it below the housing, with just a tiny bit overhang over the display to hide gap and connection, it makes it feel a bit more "professional" - don't take it the wrong way, I love your design, but I think you might not be happy over time to see the gap and connection point. But of course, it is your design and I really love it as it is. Just my own personal thought 😋

I've only watched 5 seconds of the video before commenting.
I just wanted to say, they always are and that's what we love about this channel. It's just like looking in a mirror but seeing a different face... Well for most of us that is.

Like all toilet paper and towel holders use a set screw through a hole underneath. Or a hinge… or duct tape

Glue in (super) magnets. When aligned they will, next to holding the cover, position it. Only not sure about the influence of the magnetic field on the electronics.

How about modify a design you find online? Thingiverse, etc. Why reinvent the wheel?

esp32 generates some heat, not much but they do. if you want increase your accuracy i would use some heat mirror aluminium foil between the two chambers, on the esp side. also keep the temp sensor on the bottom.
I see others meantined magnets, which is an elegant solutinon, but for mounting you can also use keyhole shaped holes for screws, and screw the bare screws into the wall, and slide the the termostat into it. That way you can screw the top and the bottom together with heatinserted threads from the bottom side. So no visible screws from the front.
Keep in mind I like to over enginneer things, so probably you shouldn't listen to me.

french cleat mounting plate to clip in the top and magnets to hold the bottom to the mounting plate.

What about on the left and right side or maybe just on the top you have a push and release mechanism that snaps into place?
Loving your videos, Jason. You're creeping your way up to being my favorite UA-camr, especially because of your server videos. You've gotten me into a lot of new things that I am obsessing over (Home Assistant)

Seems complicated, so far i think a cleat mount might be easiest, still not sure though, thank you for ideas!
And thanks for watching my random shenanigans lolol

Absolutely! it is your "shenanigans" that keep me going and tell me to keep at it and not beat the computer to death with a hammer.

Could you make the mounting system a little more simple? Like a french cleat type system where it hangs from the top and then have a screw or something that locks the bottom to the plate?

    • @Bytemybits

so simple! this may be worth testing, thank you!

Make the two upper or two lower internal posts thinner so they can flex a little bit. Then put rounded bumps on the ends. On the Mount plate put two rectangular holes for those bumps to snap into. They are rounded so they should pull off easy.
