My mom was schooled in Tamil medium and I used to always look down when it came to her English skills. She has passed away 15 years ago and this scene is a slap for children like me who do not understand the love of parents and judge them based on their linguistic and corporate skills. :-( ...Sorry amma!

Why should we talk in Tamil, If we are Indians? We can talk in whatever language we want. Point is not to think you're greater than anybody just because they don't know a language that you know.

MusicMan2065 they go to one of the higher upperclass schools, so the language of the pupils would be english (the upper class schools in India are all coonducted using english)
also Tamil is a language common in a specific state in India. The teacher is from a different state which speaks a different language, this is why he says his Tamil is not that good. His main language to converse with is English.

your statement is completely not logical... Middle class and lower class parents who can be illiterate or not well versed in English DO wish their sons and daughters to study in upper class schools... It's their right and not speaking English is not their fault.. The teacher whoever maybe must know the language of the state wherever he/she works.. Also this movie is actually made in hindi and this same scene is also in hindi too.. Whether it may be hindi or Tamil it is the duty of the teacher(or I mean any other profession) must learn atleast basics of that particular state's language...
