Came to learn why my junipers are doing...will continue my search for a more comprehensive video. Good to know that there are different varieties of junipers though so thanks for that.
We had a large sloped area with junipers that we had taken out. It was way too difficult to maintain. Standing on a slope pulling weeds was a hazard and I feared stepping on snakes. The leaves would blow in there and it was a mess. Just not for me. Not that much of it. We now have two tiered retaining walls where I can plant and maintain more easily. Great info!
Thanks, Jim. Your friend's bank, especially the crape myrtles crowning the top, is stunning. While living in my last house in Florida, a previous owner had planted a bunch of juniper ground cover. It always scared the heck out of because i am afraid of snakes. I was backed up to a field and beside a swamp, so snakes were a legitimate, and unfortunate, reality. I would not use pine straw for that reason, too. Too much camoflage, plus my mother, while gathering pine straw in our woods to put on the azaleas, always seemed to increase the snake population. Hopefully, in hour area, that isnt too big of a worry.
Newer homes in our neighborhood are using this plant in place of lawns, we're inspired to stop battling our dead spotted grass and just replace it with juniper
First video of yours I've seen, really liked the quick presentation that compared varieties, with important info like plant height, spacing, zones, etc. Excellent....so I subscribed!
This is what I’ve been looking for . I’ve battled with weedeating steep slopes for 3 years and have been looking to cover these areas. Great video with great information.
Thank you for the detailed vid! We were looking into ground covers for our slope by the side of our house in the front yard. Thought of doing a retaining walls, but the guys quoted us $thousands. I think it’s a little ridiculous. We are gonna do some borders and plant some blue rug junipers (thanks to you we know what we want). One question: Do they multiply/jump? I don’t want them to invade my neighbor’s side? If so, would putting an plastic edging prevent it? Thanks. You earned a sub! 😊
Good info on different bonsais, but we also needed to know what if a branch starts getting dry or yellow, about 3 weeks after planting outside. Do they need a special kind of soil?
That is a very nice specimen that you're showing I have these on a sloped down near the road where I live. Question is I'm wanting to root them but I'm not sure how to go about doing that does anyone know I can give me some advice. Thanks.
I'm in Southern California, zone 10b and have ~6 foot steep slope on my side yard, ~60 feet long, 10 feet wide from the yard fence to the sidewalk and is all dirt. Will Juniper do well in my zone? We get very little rain so I need something on the drought resistant side but not iceplant. We just killed all the ivy that was growing as it was taking over the wood fence and the neighbors didn't like it going into their yard. I really enjoy your video's and the easy how-to's!
Have u ever tried placing the root balls together of 2 different varieties so they merge and grow over eachother like pacific and golden? Just curious. Seems like a fun experiment.
thanks , what would be your recommendation for plants on a steep slope facing sun and wind at time, plants that could be annual ( four seasons ) resistant ,cover the ground, minimise the weeds issues, provide possibly flowers for the bees and insects for birds holdthe ground and low maintenance . I know it is much to ask ;)) Am looking at rosemary, thyme, lavender , possibly high decorative herbs ,... any recommendation? thanks a lot Francois
I have a slope facing the street that is steep and difficult to mow. I have been thinking about juniper to cover this so this video is very helpful! Two questions, when is the best time to plant - spring ot fall? Also, how often does your neighbor have to trim them to keep that gorgeous smooth look? I'm guessing he uses a hedge trimmer? Sorry, that was three questions 😁 Thanks again for the video, it's so nice to have a garden channel from someone local to me, very helpful! 🍃💚🍃
Thanks for the comparison of other junipers. They could be nice in fairy garden or potted applications where the slow growth is not as much an issue. You've provided so much useful information for growing slope applications. I need something like this for my yard as my knees can no longer take the sideways slope while mowing. My entire yard is actually nothing but clover, plantain and dandelion weeds, so keeping the Juniper weed free will be a challenge until I can get rid of all the weeds that pretend to be a lawn ( frequent mowing is a must). So, Beside Pine ( or Hardwood) mulch, do you recommend using a pre-emergent around the Juniper transplants?
Also I have a juniper that has grown 8ft tall. All the foliage below it has died. It separates me and a neighbors property (it's over 10ft on my property not touching theirs. But is there anything I can do to revitalize it? It seems like it starved itself of sunlight growing so thick. I figure I'll cut it down and plant some kind of arborvitae in its place.
Hi Jim! We have these planted on our front hill. Ours currently have weed barrier fabric around them. Is that ok? The weeds were out of control so we cleaned them all out and carefully layer the weed barrier around them.
I'm wondering if the juniper on that slope is the blue chip juniper, not the blue rug. The blue rug is flatter, is not quite as thick, has longer branches like the one he is holding in the pot, and would require quite a bit more pruning to keep it off that lawn section.
My blue rug looks similar to what you show in the video. But it’s starting to die in spaces. I’ve sprayed Dr Bronners peppermint soap, Sevin, and Neem oil. Can’t seem to control it. Any thoughts?
I’m doing this exact same thing on a embankment that I have and I’ve run into a situation where there are lots of giant rocks 6 inches 7 inches down below that I cannot break through. Is it OK to plant them setting on the rock surrounded and dirt, but the root ball is above, the ground level a few inches?
Hi Jim. My family lives in Durham, NC and we have a slope in our backyard that was left natural. The slope is beginning to erode and we are looking for a landscaper to help us figure out how to control the erosion, and help us figure out what plants we can put in that area to help. Do you have any recommendations on landscapers that might be able to help with something like this in the triangle area? Thank you!
Do they only work on a slope or can they also be used as a plant under my basement windows? We have a walkout basement in the back but in the front the windows are very low to the ground. I need something less than a foot tall, preferably lower than that.
I'm trying to decide what is the best screening plant for my yard? I'm in zone 7b. Want easy to no care. 12 feet tall at full height. I have 50 linear ft of space. I live on small lot neighbors are close. Don't want slow growing. Can you please help
Howdy Jim, I have 2-3 'problem' areas at my new-to-me house in DFW area of Texas. Wondering about the best ground cover juniper for a long strip (85' x 7') on the east side between sidewalk and fence (not the 'hellstrip' - I'm trying Liriope spicata there.) . It's a difficult to water area so, drought tolerance appreciated. Don't want too much height as sight-line for vehicles leaving drive is important. Soil is sandy and water does not 'pool' there. . J. procumbens, ? horizontalis, ? conferta ? other??? - and which var.; blue mound, wilton, blue rug - kinda wish I could find Bonin Isles....any advice welcome. I'm really leaning towards a J. conferta but....?
I have a steep hill- I'd love to plant this kind of juniper, but I would also like to add some interest of some shrubs, like nandinas or other bushes I don't have to worry about watering (relying on SC rainfall to do the work)- would it be possible to plant groups of bushes with this juniper surrounding the plants or is this juniper too aggressive for that?
How do these do with blocking out thick weeds? I have a slope behind my house that goes into a pond and it's covered with thick weeds/brush (like 6 ft tall in some places). I'm looking to kill it all and replace it with a ground cover that would hopefully choke out anything that tries to grow.
I have a small/baby bluestar juniper. I know I have to keep it outdoors so I can't bring it in. It's in a medium pot, any ideas on how to protect it? I covered the soil around it with plastic bags but I have to put more layers.
Can I ask you something? Can I plant blue rug juniper starts in fall even if they are pretty small? I ordered a tray of 60 and I dont want to sabotage them.
Do you water the entire slope or just the individual plants? Plus, how do you water those that are planted at an angle? Wouldn't the water just drip off?
Hi Jim. Great channel. Can u recommend groundcovers/shrubs for river banks to control erosion and can handle being submerged a few times per year? Part Sun Zone 5. Thanks!
Love your channel! Do you have recommendations for pond edges? Something to keep weeds out and control erosion? Mostly sun, some part shade zone 8a....Northwest Louisiana. Thank you! My landscaping is really looking great because of you! Oh....and clay soil! BIG TIME clay soil, lol!
Thanks for the great video, I had been debating pacysandra vs juniper, junipers are much more expensive but spacing isnt as tight. Question though, we have a lot of rocks just under our topsoil, will junipers root in rocky soil ?
I love how i search something like "planting on a slope", and of course a Jim Putnam video comes up! You cover allllll the bases. 😂
I wish I would have found this video before the other three juniper-care ones I watched, which had 1/3rd of the info in about twice the time. Thanks!
Came to learn why my junipers are doing...will continue my search for a more comprehensive video. Good to know that there are different varieties of junipers though so thanks for that.

I like my blue rug juniper is planted on my steep slope. I love how they flow over the boulders. They remind me of a waterfall.
Thanks, Jim. Your friend's bank, especially the crape myrtles crowning the top, is stunning. While living in my last house in Florida, a previous owner had planted a bunch of juniper ground cover. My man this was a great video about this . THANK YOU . Bennie
I'm in Belgium. Procumbens nana is the fastest grower of all junipers I have. It's the queen of junipers for me.
My new favorite channel. Thank you!
Thank you
The juniper bank is beautiful. My issue with carpet juniper,or any juniper,is weeds and grass. Difficult to manage. Can't live with weeds! LOL
This is what I’ve been looking for . I’ve battled with weedeating steep slopes for 3 years and have been looking to cover these areas. Great video with great information.
Nepeta if full sun or creeping phlox if part shade. Much easier to maintain. Plant at top of slope and let them creep down over time.
comprehensive information, thanks...great looking Juniper bank
really great video!!!...I'm planing a project with Blue Rug Juniper layered with Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper...
Thank you for this video and your channel. A lot of helpful information, especially for a newbie.
Ive got a grey owl juniper bonsai. Junipers are my favorite plants to work into a bonsai especially ground cover types.
I'm doing that for my steep front yard and gonna add it to my back yard.
Awesome video...helped me make my decision which to use 👍
this is MY favorite channel also

Use CA native juniper, and mix in some manzanitas, rocks... ceanothus.

I have a small slope but I will use the junipers
Thanks for sharing

Hi Jim. When plating on a bank as a mass planting, how far would you space them apart?
Helpful!!!
how much water do these low rise junipers need? looing for a lawn replacement. Here is Southern California
Is there any herbicide that will not harm juniper. I have tons on the slope difficult to handle. Any input will be appreciated

how do you water when planted. drip? will they still need watering frequently when established?? drought tolerant?

approximately how far down a slope will a green mound juniper grow? The slope is very mild.

Try Green Giant Thuja
@@cliffdariff74 how about zone 5 ?

Yes, and low growing nandinas would work. You will have to water for a while though
Can I put down weed fabric before planting them into the soil to have less weeds?
Are any of these junipers shade tolerant? Any recommendations for a very shady slope?
Hi, when is best season to prune junipers? Fall or spring? Thanks!!!
steve cool spring
We have shade so needed a different juniper

It's best to water with a drip house. You only really need to water the top two rows. Gravity will take of the rest
What about a clay soil bank?

I am looking to plant on a sloped pond bank as well! I live in Lafayette, Lo. So tired of weedeating lol.
What about juniper parsoni?
Less GD Juniper followers than I expected
That is not what juniper usually looks like! That thing is gorgeous. No way that was low maintenance. 😁
Thanks for the great video, I had been debating pacysandra vs juniper, junipers are much more expensive but spacing isnt as tight. Question though, we have a lot of rocks just under our topsoil, will junipers root in rocky soil ?
They will be fine with the rocks, as long as you can plant them.
@@JimPutnam Thanks Jim, it is a pain to dig. Would you prefer these over pachysandra
Has anyone mentioned pachysandra grows in the shade, junipers in full sun
They look like a life form that came from a planet with extremely high gravity.
How on Earth would you maintain this!? Step all over it?
Looks SO boring, this hill needs rock or a tree or both!
