  • A little over a year since our first trip along this line during winter, Paolo brings us a second trip during the winter - spring transition of 2021. The highlight of this trip is the locomotive we're taking, the oldest of the legendary Ge 6/6 II locomotives from 1958, with the number 702. Currently many older RhB locomotives are being put out of service and scrapped as new rolling stock is made available. The ticking sound you'll hear is typical of older locomotives in Europe - it's the Swiss made Hasler speedometer, with a built in clock and data recorder. UPDATE: The locomotive from this video is now on display at the Swiss museum of transport near Lucerne.
    The regular train operating this line can be seen at the start of the video entering the depot. Due to a technical problem, the Ge 6/6 II was able to pull today's train (quite a rare occurrence).
    Enjoy the trip as we slowly gain altitude from Landquart at 523m above sea level to St. Moritz at 1775m above sea level, passing through the longest meter gauge railway tunnel in the world (Vereina) on our way and through many beautiful Swiss mountain villages.

    Seems to me like between 1910 and 1915 every able bodied person in Switzerland was either digging tunnels or building viaducts....remarkable country.

      They were building a lot of mountain railway lines 'round that time, weren't they... And a general conscription to navvy duties is actually a plausible explanation as to how they could get it all done(...)

    Wonderful tour of the engine at the end. Seeing the switching necessary to get to the cars, and changing ends for return trip. A real engineers view. Everything but how the engineer got to work and home again. Did he or she have to take another train, walk or bike? Not all the way home of course but that would almost complete an "Average Day in A Swiss Rail Engineer's Life." Thank you so much for the experience.

    0:2:49 The turntable's configuration in conjunction with the yard trackage permitting whole trainset access to/egress from the maintenance shed is very imaginative. Have never seen such an arrangement as this before. Neat.
    0:3:14 " We no (sic) need to get our 5 Wagons from the M track group." I like your thinking, Paolo, I'm with you, buddy! I think to have a Swiss housekeeper would be the greatest thing. The whole country has a neat and tidy aspect about it with a knack of precise compartment. Even the trees seem to follow the rules. If there's a disheveled or unkempt area in Switzerland, I want to see it to believe it. That long tunnel is an engineering marvel. How did they do it? Totally blown away by this train ride.

    Also hard to remember that the road was not there. It was a trail or wagon track. One very fun thing for me with this old cab is seeing the quite clear negative reflected back onto the windscreen of what I am not seeing in the white glare as we exit tunnels. No ones camera seems to be really fast at adjusting from the dark of the tunnel to normal sunlight. Yet somehow what ever is reflecting that negative image cuts the intensity enough so the negative image has no glare. I will miss this as the old engines disappear.

      @@lorirocks777 The ones that I recall may not not have been Hasler...but I'm guessing that their manner of operation may have been the same. You have a good youtube channel as well. My father is from northern Italy...Sondrio. I enjoy the ride that you present from Tirano to St Moritz. My father spent some time constructing railways in Switzerland back in the 1950s. He told me that the sleepers they used were made of steel. "Sleeper" is the Australian term for the items that hold the rails together. The Americans call them "ties". I notice that you have timber sleepers at many of the platforms or "stations" and concrete or steel in other places. In my state, Queensland, in Australia, We use concrete sleepers everywhere. Easy question...are your high speed rail trains functioning on standard gauge tracks?

    Lovely cab ride as always! Enjoyed the shunting procedures both at Landquart at St. Moritz. The initial quick run from Landquart to Schiers at mostly 80 kph and then the curves and climbing up made a really nice video especially with the snow in the later half. The new Bever station also looks very nice! Just one doubt - at the beginning it is mentioned that the regular train for the run was supposed to be the Allegra ABe 8/12. However I have observed in real life and in videos that the RegioExpress between Landquart and St. Moritz consists of the old coaches with mostly a Ge 4/4 II. Even in this video itself, the 2 REs that you cross in the opposite direction (St. Moritz to Landquart) are with a Ge 4/4 II and not the Allegra. So was it really supposed to be the Allegra for the run? Anyway, thanks for posting this wonderful ride!

    • @dellacapaolo
      @dellacapaolo 3 роки тому

      Since March 2021 it has been everything changing a lot. The train 1327 is still planned to have an Allegra ABe 8/12.
      This trains Landquart-St.Moritz will consist of new Capricorns ABe 4/16 by December 2021.

    • @rishad_travel_diaries
      @rishad_travel_diaries 3 роки тому

      @@dellacapaolo Oh okay. Personally I am not a fan of the newer trains. I honestly don't like the look of the Capricorns much. The Allegras are okay though. Even on the main Albula line, in 2019, I got one of those Alvra trainsets for one of my journeys and it was quite difficult to take photos through the glass. The openable windows are only few and at one end of the train. I prefer the conventional locomotive hauled trains with the old coaches. They look the best and all the windows can open. I understand that modernisation is for the benefit of all, but still - just stating my honest opinion.

    thanks for including the shunting at the start and the engine tour at the end. A question for Paolo, is it difficult to change between driving a modern and old lokomotiv. Do you have a favourite?

    • @dellacapaolo
      @dellacapaolo 3 роки тому +11

      No it's not so difficult but you just have to switch in your head the "driving mode". Hard to pick a favourite: for the power a Ge 4/4 III, nostalgic a Ge 6/6 II and modern an ABe 8/12

    Pardon me asking, but where was that ticking sound coming from? It must be a huge clock... because you know, Swiss. But clocks don't stop right when the train stops, so I'm slightly uncertain.

    Merci beau vidéo encore une fois , j'ai bien aimé la table tournante au début avec une voie en courbe et l'autre droite. Première fois aussi que je vois l'agencement des caténaires au dessus de la table tournante !! Quel est le courant utilisé, 1,500 volts DC ?
