- We're off for a trip to Weston Super Mare to meet Beverly Baker, who's lived there all her life. She tells us about the history of Weston through pictures and film. She tells us about living and working in a hotel, and about employment in the town. Features some great footage of hotels, cafe's, nightclubs, the town itself, and of course the fashion of the day! Made in 1981 by ATV, and repeated here in Summer Term 1984. Continuity is a quick second of an Interval Slide and the schools countdown clock followed by the Central Presents ATV Ident. From my own personal collection of video tapes. Uploaded for educational purposes only.
Great to see Weston 'Tech', as we called it! with the wonderful steps at the front, now sadly lost with the new front. I was there 1975-76, I always remember being fascinated by the steps entering the building almost half way up! I liked its concrete brutal look, now it looks like a Marriot Hotel! I did the pre diploma science course, retaking O levels!!! I failed everything! but the best memories of my life! Mr Hanson was my tutor, Mr Swindle, English teacher, many names lost in time.

The year I left Weston. That era was fabulous. Anyone else remember Fannys, Neptune's nook, Mr B's or was it Suzies? Old Wyvern guy here, but now living in Patagonia.

Hobbits Hole, The Andromeda Club, the Three Queens, Maximilian’s Wine bar, The London, The Crighterian. Finish of the night with a Chinese at the Wun Wa. Many more around . 1968 onwards.

Was this one of the last times that we had the Central Presents / ATV logo - it's now May 1984 and Central has been around for over two years.
Funny how Beverly Baker said she wanted to get out of Weston as she now runs the Beachlands Hotel with her husband now that her parents retired. Heard it's a very good place to stay.
wow, miss old weston! i shall date this footage to 1980, only because there was a bit of fottage from one of my carnival clubs carts there, was done in 1980 "Johnny Reb." would love to be there now in that era, clubbing in there with some decent tunes!!
I remember the summer of 1976 . I was at college and we were plagued by ladybirds along the seafront .. very hot summer
I vividly remember that. On the seafront by the pier and the roads and pavements were a carpet of red.
My mum would always remind me of the ladybirds at Weston when I was small. My family used to visit WSM alot when I was growing up. I can remember visiting the waxworks museum too and was disappointed from what I remember it looked more like the house of horrors. My parents always came back to Weston when they were in their retirement years.
I was there, the sea wall was red. i never knew they could give a strong bite. people were going into the pubs and shops to get away from the little bilghters.
OMG. Just stumbled across this. I remember Beverly Baker. If you are out there Beverly, remember The Occupants?

Still go to Weston and Clevedon was there this this year 2023-24 it’s changed a awful lot not for the better.
That was the old Weston pier before an “electrical fault” (!!!) caused a fire and they rebuilt it from the insurance pay out!
It burned down in 2008. Sad!

Yes you're right. The programme was made in 1981 but this was a repeat broadcast recorded on tape in 1984. Some schools programmes were repeated for up to 10 years :)

I believe she is still working at Beachlands. She certainly was when I worked there in early 2000s. I was pleasantly surprised to come across this video

Also some central newly created would have the ident on and some atv programs they newly made did like starting science and basic maths is sequel junior maths certain terms my favourite central program opener all year round love hearing sounds clocks and grandfather clock altogether just genius and the seasons on the calendar black background probably took weeks to make for a few seconds ways with words was another schools program not sure when choices began love the theme tune
We went on to see the central presents ATV zoom until December 84 although in 1984 some varied maybe re badged or central added live ? You know how I know in 1985 snowing got a Monday of school 10.11 am looking forward to seeing basic maths with the black and rainbow central ident gutted expecting central presents ATV I do believe in some instances a atv network logo was used a few times on stop look listen and starting science protectors episode but I think the re badged central programs really took off

The film was made in 1981 according to the end credits, more in keeping with the fashion shown in it.

@@briansaiditsoitmustbetrue4206 Yes you’re right. This film was indeed made in 1981 but it was recorded off the TV in 1984. It was probably shown half a dozen times since it was made. I must admit the clothes and fashion are quite something aren’t they! 😁
