I had a old coach once tell us....."What good is it to have a 30 homerun first baseman when I have a starter that gives up that many in a season?" 2024 will dictate what direction this team is headed for the next four or five seasons.....For good or bad. Charlie! Love the new pairing with you and Brendan! You guy's should think hard about doing a in studio show like AJ Pewzinki's? That would be awesome! Call it " Fan Talk on The Bird!"
Good session guys! We’ve lived in North Central Iowa for the past 25 years. We used to get all the Cardinals & Blues games & since the Bally Sports debacle we get screwed on coverage! It’s either Direct/AT&T or FUBO & I can’t help but blame MLB on not taking care of the fans! If the Cardinals teamed up with the Blues on a streaming platform there are a lot of Cardinals fans outside of the St.Louis metro area that would definitely go with it. All we can do for now is hope that it will all work out.
Finally you had a guest who talks realistic rather than all these WACKY DIE HARD Cardinal fans who KNOW ZERO about baseball. This is exactly what is going to happen... GOLDY isn't coming back. Why? He sees this ownership group isn't going to spend whatever it takes. He wants to hand pick his next team. Nolan will immediately ask the Cardinals for a trade. MO-RON will step aside because his ego is so massive he wouldn't want to be the face of not making the playoffs. If the Cards don't win next season Nolan and Goldy, plus I would guess Lynn, Gibson, Matz, Miles, probably you'd consider trading Tommy because he makes some money, you'd dump any combination of these guys. The Cardinals payroll all of a sudden drops into the 60 million range. The Cardinals announce they're going to rebuild around younger players. Payroll stays in the 80 to 100 million range for about 2 to 3 years. At the same time watch the ownership group also CLAIM... ONCE our YOUNG team is READY we'll spend WHATEVER it takes to acquire players to WIN again. Attendance will drop to about 1.7 million ... the Cardinals will build the farm system, keep those guys down there until they're ready to explode while getting CHEAP MLB starters. This is my prediction this entire thing is about to BLOW UP. CAN WE PLEASE take all that NFL money and build a new ARENA for a possible NBA team... The Cardinals are done the ownership group built ball park village, they have a new stadium, I think they want this thing to coast and just make as much money as possible to pay off all their investments. Why not? If you're not going to win a WORLD SERIES and YOU KNOW IT... why would you spend 175 million to go 500 or make the playoffs only to lose. Spend 75 million lose and tell fans once we're READY we're going to spend whatever it takes to give everyone HOPE! The Cardinals organization are the ULTIMATE manipulators of this fan base.
You guys have a lot more faith in this Cardinal pitching staff than I do. Sorry when I hear Cardinal Front Office, Ollie, and Cardinal podcasters, I am hearing way to many " if's ",. A good team isn,'t described by " if's ", they know what they are going to do because they have a plan with players they can count on to do their job.
I like the name "Low Hanging Fruit," although (to make it more immediately recognizeable to other fans), maybe something like "Fred-Bird Bash" or "Cardinal: Critcal" might be another option. As far as Goldy's extension goes, I got to be honest... To me, it does not make sense if we do not go ALL IN, RIGHT NOW. Not partially in... Not setting up for the both the near and far future... All in: right now! Even in the short term, it will block our young guys getting more playing time, and setting us up for a potential situation of trying to keep guys on the bench until they are 26+, and also no immediate replacement for Goldschmidt in sight. I love having Goldy and Arenado, but they are both in, or about to be in, a point in their careers where a World Series has to occur within the next two years, or it does not look like it will during their tenure in St. Louis. Not together, at least. Basically, signing Goldschmidt to an extension makes sense if we still go out and sign Bauer, and maybe trade for a Logan Gilbert type. If we don't make those types of moves, then we do not have a World Series pushing team, and all this does is create another roadblock for our young guys.
Podcast Suggestions: The Cheap Seats, Swing or Miss, Bird Droppings, The Latest Scoop, Charlie’s Cornerless, Extra Innings, Marlow’s Mutterings, That’s about it for now. I will probably add something later from my dark, dank basement.
Outstanding conversation. You two guys bouncing ideas off one another is very good. Thanks to both of you for the work you put into it. I love the tinfoil conversation on a possible lineup for 2025!
As long as a team is winning, fans will support it, regardless of whether they have star players or not. If the team isn’t successful, then having one or two potential Hall of Famers becomes important as a way to keep fans turning out. I am old enough to remember the Cardinals of the 1950’s and while the team wasn’t successful, fans came out to see Stan Musial. Without Stan, attendance during this period would have been abysmal.
The "what if" talk around the 15-20 min mark was super interesting. As a fan my fear is that they go into that soft rebuild and carry a bottom third payroll and then never go back to spending. Sure it's cool that the Rays can field a competitive team without spending, but that strategy hasn't resulted in any WS wins and more often than not (see any of Oakland, Cincinnati, Miami, Pittsburgh etc.) it results in years of dreadful baseball. Given the history of the franchise and the loyalty of the fanbase, the Cardinals should be doing more than just trying to improve the bottom line for their owners. In sum, as a fan I'm ok with a soft rebuild but not if it comes with a permanent reduction in payroll.
I haven't watched a Cardinals or Blues game in three years on TV. Bally isn't on UA-cam TV so I don't get their games. You can stream the games on illegal streaming sites, but a lot of the times it doesn't work right. You can watch all the UFC fights on illegal streaming. Here is the point ANYONE can watch Blues or Cardinals on ILLEGAL streaming. Guess what you see NO COMMERCIALS and the Cardinals or Blues get no money, or more specifically Bally Sports. The current arrangement doesn't work for Bally obviously they're going bankrupt. Bottom line I'd love to see Netflix or Apple or Amazon just buy everything MLB - NHL. I'd pay them more per month if you could just get those games. However MLB has their own streaming service they should just add an option to pay more to get LOCAL TEAMS and you give all that money to the local team. Boom done! I don't think its a good idea for the Cardinals or Blues to create their own network, because illegal streaming is an option so most people would watch illegal than pay a subscription. They need to simply sell their rights to another streaming company.
So what happens if this year’s April is reminiscent of 2023. 10 games under .500 will have the fans up in arms. Cards need to be within a couple of games of .500 by end of April or players will start pressing and that is never good.
I started my love affair with the Cardinals on KMOX. Many of us are now in are 70’s or older. The fan base is not as wide spread as it once was. We were the farthest West team in MLB. All that has changed over the years. Not to mention that baseball has taken a back seat to football. The Cardinals are going to really have to step up and spend to get the players that everyone wants to see. I’m not sure that fits with the thoughts that the DeWitts have. Could be a completely different look by 2027 when it comes to ownership.
The problems with the RSN's are nothing but an excuse to not spend more. The Cardinals Organization has the money to raise payroll significantly (Not like the Dodgers, but significantly more). I really wish the local media would stop taking the bait on this story. It is a red herring. It doesn't matter to anyone but the owners. No one else should care. It is not newsworthy. As a fan, I do not care if the owners make money. I was a fan of the Cardinals before the Dewitts owned the team and I will more than likely be a fan when they are no longer the majority owners. I want to watch a winner. If the owners can put a winner on the field and make money great. If the owners can put a winner out on the field and lose money, great. I want to watch a winner and I have ZERO concerns about the bank accounts of a billionaire family. Just like they could care less about me and my family.
The Rays problem is not the stadium, and they win a lot, but there still isn't people in the stands. The Rays problem is that they don't over pay for that beloved player to stick around. The Cardinals have long understood that the individual player is just as important as winning and they probably have sacrificed wins to keep some of them around, that sounds bad but overall it's really good for the team. I don't want the Cardinals to be the Rays, the Rays suck everything that is external of baseball and I don't feel any connection to them at all because of it.
Just went through and liked everything whether I agree with it or not. Hope it helps your bottom line. I suggest you teach your six year old to thumbs up everything. You can still comment on a few. That will free you up to build your real estate empire. Please continue to whisper or yell into Cat’s ear for him to produce more than one podcast a week.
I do not know why you would extend a 37 year olds contract when you have Walker/Gorman/Burleson waiting to take over that position. Great player. Great team mate. Great person, but 37 is on the way out, not an extension. Spend that money on another top range pitcher. Develope players from the draft and minions. If necessary go out and sign a FA like a Arenado?
Personally I would have rather had one higher caliber starter to go with Sonny Gray than two lower caliber starters like Lynn & Gibson..And factored in Gibson somehow to go with Mikolas & Matz.. Gibson wanted to come to St.Louis anyway..
Personally I would have rather had one higher caliber starter to go with Sonny Gray than two lower caliber starters like Lynn & Gibson..And factored in Gibson somehow to go with Mikolas & Matz.. Gibson wanted to come to St.Louis anyway..I also believe Mo and the Cardinals are just a little too much budget minded to go very far and that state of mind is eventually going to drive good talent and fans aways..I hope I'm wrong and wish I had as high hopes as you guys..
If he declines and Baker or Burelson take off ... or maybe even Walker or Gorman ... it makes sense holding off on extending him ... its kind of shi**y in a terms of loyality ... but buisness wise. Having Burelson there hitting 35 bombs. Then taking Goldies salary and applying it elsewhere would be a +.
Paul Goldschmidt is 36 and at the very end of his prime. If we can sign him for under 8 million a year i would consider it. but FFS we need to not give all our money to old past prime players.
If you want to sign Goldschmidt for 8 million dollars you have to do it as a free agent if you resign him while he's still under contract he's going to get like 20 million dollars million dollars
We fall in love with our players, which is great, I never wanted Brock, Gibson, McGwire to retire, but they got old. We need to see if, at the deadline, if someone needs offense at first base, and if we can get another younger stud pitcher, you have to consider it if Goldschmidt waives no trade clause. First base, not Contreras(DH)Walker played third. Could he play first? Burleson may be better at first.Trade Tommy for pitching, I love him, but we have replacements.
I probably text too much to you guys, but I can't tell you how much I look forward to both your shows along with JD. As soon as I saw we got a deal, like Carpenter's, I immediately think, oh my God I got to get on and see what is being said!!! I'm finally on the interweb,so watch out!!! LOL 💖
