This snare drum is a Sugar Percussion 5”x14” Painted Poplar. They normally cost $900 but I bought this on sale at the end of 2020 for 25% off. Worth every single penny! Let me know what you think of the drum in the comments below!
I bought one 4? years ago... and was quite sceptical about it... but few weeks back something changed and it sounded absolutely phenomenal at our gig so I am finally relieved :D
Poplar is the wood on many entry level kits and I find myself loving to play poplar kits especially snares. I’m glad Sugar is taking this wood and selling it as a premium product. Poplar deserves more attention. Great buy and it sounds awesome ❤
The only other snare I've heard that sounds that good is copper. "Clank" is my term for that note after the snare strike. The snare should have some clank.I agree that drum sounds perfect...
I mostly like controlled overtone unless a song REALLY needs a lot of "clang" - but with this drum...WOOOOOOOOW. I let it ring as much as it wants! haha
Honestly - I like this drum better. The fully painted shell actually "self dampens" and I find this drum REALLY tunable as you don't have to fight ring/overtones as much as other drums. I love my Supraphonic but it has so much ring to it I almost always have to adjust tuning and dampening at the same time to get that drum to work great in the studio. With this drum it is more "set it and forget it." This drum also records INCREDIBLY well. I've been so blown away by it.
they normally go for $900 USD but they were running a sale at the end of the year for 25% off, so based on when he said he bought it, he most likely paid $625. I also took advantage of the sale and got the green one. It's a phenomenal drum.
I was about to say that intro with the typewriter must of been inspired by Van Neistat's channel, but then I saw the date... Is it possible that he was then inspired by you...? but but but this video was only uploaded today... But what if you recorded the intro today and just typed an older date... Does any of this even matter?? I was really just hoping that the two of you knew each other or were secretly fans of each other's work hahaha
WOW. I'm super impressed you picked up on that. You are 100% correct. Saw one of his videos and was like, "I have a type writer! Let's do that instead of make animations in After Effects" haha. Totally ripped it from him.
Hey Jason! That is an Audio Technica AT875R. It's a shotgun mic that I record all my vocals for these videos and my podcast (You're Good. Get Better.) with. It is very affordable and one of my favorite dialog mics out there (even over the SM7B).
I don't know if there's such a thing as "the greatest snare in the world". A drum is only going to sound as good as the person that's playing it. If a drum sounds good then the credit should go to the person who was able to get the best out of the drum.
Totally agree. The title is 90% there to get people to click on the video. 10% I named this video that because I actually DO think that Sugar Percussion makes the best drums on planet Earth. BUT - to your point - it is all in the player to make a drum sound great. A drum is limited to how great the touch/tone/performance of the player.
@@TimBuell So you're saying that you just lie to people to get views? You deceive people in order to get views? I don't know if I like that policy. That's akin to what a car salesman would do to sell a car. It's a bit disingenuous? I don't know. I think it is, but that's just me. Maybe I have different values that I live by. I know not everyone is the same, but back to drums. You wouldn't be able to pick out that snare in a blindfolded test against a bunch of other snares. Cymbals are another matter. You could tell an Agop Signature from a Sabiam B8 Pro Rock Ride, but snares sound like snares. Brass is brass, maple is maple, birch is birch. You think it sounds special, but it doesn't really. Any good quality snare is going to sound good enough.
@@alanduncan1980 Hey Alan. I totally hear you on the ethics of "clickbait". Truthfully, I actually DO think that this drum is the best in MY personal collection. As well, I think that I absolutly could pick this out of a blindfolded lineup, especially if I'm the one playing it. Sugar Percussion drums have ALWAYS stood out to me as drums that are the easiest to tune and play out of any other drums I've played. Certainly this snare isn't the right choice for EVERYTHING, and it isn't the only snare I use. But I do truly think this is the best snare in my studio, which is why I titled the video the way I did - BOTH to make the video standout on UA-cam as well as because I just think it is true for me personally. But everyone has a right to their opinion, and I'm not offended at all if we have to agree to disagree.
@@TimBuell I for one am glad to made the video and brought this snare to my attention. Some drums to have an it factor that others lack and make you want to play more. I found that with one of my snares. I’ll be checking this out. If you feel this snare enables you to get a better sound that makes you more into your drumming then the title is not clickbait.
@@larrytate1657 Thanks for the kind words Larry! If you haven't checked out any Sugar Percussion stuff yet I couldn't recommend it enough. To me, they are easily the best drums in the world.

I bought the Green 5"x14" painted poplar and it has been my best friend ever since ! Love that freaking drum !!!!
Agreed! This thing is what I've tracked like...85% of the stuff I've done since I got it.

Agreed! This drum really slays. I’ve tracked on some tunes that wouldn’t have been complete without it
Sounds absolutely fantastic!!!
Thanks so much! Sugar Percussion can’t be beat in my mind
Sounds shockingly good omggg
Aaah yes, my favorite drum channel
That is VERY kind Christian. I'm trying to put more out as of late. Hopefully I can keep up the pace! haha
Beat me to it!!! What a great snare drum
Ha! I didn't know we were racing - but I do LOVE winning things.
Yeah man - I'm super pleased with it.
Souds great !!
Thanks so much!
Love it 👌🏽🥁🔥
Thanks so much! I'm certainly pleased with my purchase haha.
Tremendous

It’s VERYYYY good. I agree a snare should have some musical overtones when no dampening is applied
kudos!
Thanks so much Julian!
well shit. now I gotta get one
Indeed you do.
Autsch .Great Sound
Snare sounds amazing very pleasing overtones at all the tunings and I’m not a fan of snare overtone lol beautiful drum my man and nice playing too🥁🔥

Great sound, but the wood is poplar ????
Yep! Poplar and then the whole shell is painted which makes it look AWESOME and also adds some natural dampening.
They actually seem not too far out of reach because you can buy them on a payment plan so it becomes just 75 dollars a month for one of these.
How do you like it compared to the Sugar mahogany that you played before?
Honestly - I like this drum better. The fully painted shell actually "self dampens" and I find this drum REALLY tunable as you don't have to fight ring/overtones as much as other drums. @@TimBuell very cool - plus I'm sure the softer poplar wood eats up some resonance and adds to that studio-friendliness, too
Nice snare dude

Holy cow! So I’m not crazy! (Well not AS crazy)
nice!!! Also, what's the model of that mic next to your monitor?

@@TimBuell many thanks Tim, that mic sounds very natural and not overbearing like some other mics. I’ll pick one up for my set up.
