    Thanks for this; there are never enough videos around featuring Sarah Haider! It'd be wonderful if she made more appearances, or maybe started a UA-cam channel, because the world needs more of her trenchant good sense. I follow her on social media, and she has reasoned and insightful points to make on every topic she touches. She absolutely demolished a lot of Reza Aslan's religious apologia. She's just brilliant all round.

      whats the difference between metal and death metal?

    • @1ukeee
      @1ukeee 7 років тому +5

      Metal has sub genres. It's not that important, just a way to say the specific style of the music.

    • @theibexmoon4057
      @theibexmoon4057 7 років тому

      "Metal" is often used as the common phrase to mean all metal music, but when used specifically is it used to describe bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath (heavy, fast or slow tempo, with typically clean vocals). Death Metal is used to describe a sub-genre with bands like Cannibal Corpse, Deeds Of Flesh, Morbid Angel (Heavier in tone and tuning, tempo is usually fast with double bass/blast beats, and of course the death growl). It should also be noted, that even within subgenres, the subgenres change over over time. Metal has a long and deep history, I could talk about it for hours.

    OMG This is the absolutely best interview I watched in YEARS!!! This side of the problem is absolutely unaddressed by anybody else. Aron is the best. I wish all the politicians were like him. Great interview!!
    The right wing incites hatred against Muslim and the left does not allow anybody to talk about musilim problems such as persecution within the community, because they brand them as islamophobic. However it is totally possible to address issues with Islam without being islamophobic, the way Aron does.

    As a U.S. citizen, the reason I see why most Americans take Freedom of Speech for granted (some even go so far as to disdain it :O) is because we are horribly educated in our history. The push for more respect for authority by the Church conglomerate and Republican extremists as well as the over reaction of people regarding Trump's election is causing large amounts of conflicts to arise and crusades against what people perceive as "fake news." All of this is leading down a path of no tolerance. We have a country filled with moderates but divided by small extremist groups yelling to the top of their lungs. It's spreading a general propensity of hate and intolerance to ideas of differing origins. No one wants to listen to alternative ideas anymore because people are more concerned about who's agenda is getting done the actual problems such as division that need to be fixed.

      @ManlyOBeeferton 7 років тому +2

      You *can* reason with _some_ religious people though. That's why there are ex-Muslims, ex-Christians etc.

    • @Chamelionroses
      @Chamelionroses 7 років тому

      Manly O'Beeferton that of course isn't religious. There are nontheist religions. There are non religious theists and nontheist that are without religions as defined in a dictionary. Then there are religious that care about separation of church and state avoiding corruption and cults in power. Then there are fundamentalists and zealots. Some that are control freaks and don't care about anything, but perhaps self-righteous thinking from themselves saying deities told them to do terrorism or be a jerk.
      Though if you are going with a subjective definition of religious please go on with explaining the meaning.
      Though if you mean that they converted because of reasoning maybe.
      I suggest to watch Atheist Experience on how people come to believe or find disbelief.

    Hello from Yugoslavia. After WWII, Communists won and done something terrible. They put people to - Schools! Imagine that, men, women, children, even old people were put to - schools and they learned a lot. High school books from 1970-1980 about evolution only were so good that I used them for fifth year at faculty. And the religion - dissipated. There were people who respected some traditions, but true believer - no. Bosnian (Muslim) women were mainly not covered (unless old and bold, as any women in Balkans...).
    After the breakup, we became nationalists and passionate believers. In Croatia, Catholics made laws, in Serbia priests drive only Merc and Audi (average salary of normal people is 400$, per month), in Bosnia starts some extremism, and yes... We started to get science deniers.
    Put people to schools, brute force, put the knowledge in their mind :)

    • @TotalRookie_LV
      @TotalRookie_LV 7 років тому

      I'm not buying that "no true believer" statement. I was bapticized as an infant in Roman Catholic tradition in USSR in 1970s, because one of my close relatives was a true believer, a very nice and kind lady, just a believer. Of course, I grew up an atheist, but sometimes I like to brag about being bapticized in USSR during Brezhnev era, when some asshole brings up "war on religion" under Soviets. 8D Yes, there was discrimination on certain bad consequences to being religious, but that's it.
      What damn Commies did absolutely wrong - they said religion is bad, mostly mentioning only Inquisition and other historic atrocities, but didn't really explain what is bad in the very essence of faith in the irrational, which might have some basis - Communism itself was pretty much a state religion with no rational basis for it. So, when Soviet era ended, and it turned out that Communism was bad, a lots of people fell into a logical trap, a misconception - "Communists said religion is bad, Communists are bad, therefore religion must be good". And so we witnesed the rise of religiosity in ex-Comblock countries.

    • @edwincasimir28
      @edwincasimir28 7 років тому +1

      That might work for the majority of ex-eastbloc countries. Balkan states are a bit different, in that religiosity was, majorly, embraced after the fact as a means of nationalistic virtue signalling and zeitgeist mentality, especially in Serbia and parts of Bosnia. Croats generally tended to actually cloak a sincere religiosity, and it shows, but Serbs... as I said, they'll baptize their kids, they'll have priests consecrate their apartments, they'll even get married in church, but the complete nature of their belief is hollow. Most don't know anything from the Old Testament, if not being completely ignoring of it, and most can name only two commandments and four apostles, if any at all. And the list goes on and on.
      And they also don't know jack shit about the Church, either. They turn a blind eye to high-ranked church members being driven around in giant Audis, despite their oaths of poverty. They don't realize that tax money gets sneakily siphoned to the Church to pay FUCKING PENSIONS to MONKS living halfway on the other side of Thessaloniki, nor that the Church operates fully tax exempt for-profit businesses, money laundering, and landlordship of apartments, fully tax free. It's one thing not to tax sales happening within megachurches in Texas, at least that maintains the sneakiness of "under the church umbrella" but overt profiteering on public and private land outside of church land goes completely without a hitch.

    • @TotalRookie_LV
      @TotalRookie_LV 7 років тому

      I guess collussion of Orthodox church and the state is much worse in Russia now, as "spirituality" and "traditional values" are pressed by authorities as national ideology there, than that in Balkan states.
      And yes, it's a bit hard to me to relate to your situation, since here in Latvia there is no single big church. Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Rusian Orthodox churches all have more or less equal influence (religious population is aproximately 1/4 orthodox, while RC and Lutherans are around 1/3 each, the reast are smaller groups like Baptists, Krishnaites etc), or shall I say - "marketshare", which is somewhat unique situation, as most countries have some religious group noticably larger than others. here they somewhat balance each other out and none of them can take upper hand. Of course they still try to push bible lesons in schools and act, like they have some moral authority, but luckily we live in the most non-religious part of the world (ironically, our national anthem is "God bless Latvia!"). As a parent I could choose between bible studies and ethics for my kid in school, as far as I know, noone or almost noone choosed religious BS. Besides churches themselves are more interested in getting some real estate, that the lost (or at least they claim so) during Soviet era.

    • @edwincasimir28
      @edwincasimir28 7 років тому +1

      We seem to relate in other ways, though, lol.
      The anthem of Serbia is "God of Justice", as if Yahweh understood the concept :) But it's so cheesy, it makes it sound like everything is fucking God, as if our country is some kind of theocracy, as apart from the reality of an officially secular state.
      Schools also offer the option between ethics and religious studies, though the split in chosen subjects is about 50-50 between students, and the religious studies only cover eastern orthodox, despite there being plenty of catholics in the country (a minority, but still). It almost makes me wish there was a bigger percentage of other religious groups, then the situation of church influence on the state would be more interesting.
      Well, this has been an interesting and enlightening exchange, and I thank you for not making reactionary quips, I get so much of that lately it's gotten almost impossible to make civilized conversation.

      Religious education has no place in schools. If we live in secularen States, religion is not part of the education. Unless all religions are taught as an ethics lesson. In Germany there are religious instruction now for Muslims. I am strongly opposed.Religion is a private matter, such as sexual practices and eating habits. Fuck religion shit liberalism.
