What a year for music '71 was! Reverse the digits and you have my age then. So glad that I was around to experience it. Now at least I have my memories of an amazing, never-to-be-repeated time.

I was 15 in 1971. Just an unbelievably rich year for music. It was also the last year for the 'true' muscle cars. In a way it feels like from this point on everything culturally started to be gradually watered down.
I extend it to a top 10: 1) Joni Mitchell Blue 2) the Kinks Muswell Hillbillies 3) marvin Gaye What's going on 4) Beach Boys Surf's up 5) Rolling Stones Sticky fingers 6) Elton John Madman across the water 7) Paul McCartney RAM 8) The Allman Brothers At Fillmore east 9) Sly and the Family Stone There's a riot going on 10) Funkadelic Maggot Brain

I love Cat Stevens and specially that album too and Kramzer's phrase: "grabbing you by the hand and just taking you on a slow walk" to describe the feeling of listening to Teaser and the Firecat is excellent, I never had thought on expressing it like that ... and it's beautiful.
I loved the summer of "71" as my best friend and I were coming of age. Still lighthearted and fancy free without a care in the world. It was so nice and I mean really nice just to listen to all our favorite songs in "71" just from a cheap transistor radio. Boy I wish sometimes we could go back to the days where everything was casual, unimportant and easy going. Somewhere else other than a world filled with androids and robots for say. If people today could only know what that was like, I wonder if they too would want it any different than the simple easy going but hard working days like we had. We worked for what we got and appreciated our time freeloading with our pals.
Ironically, Who's Next was actually the most ambitious, grandiose, theatrical Rock opera that Pete Townsend ever wrote. The original project was meant to be an immersive, multimedia, audience participation, almost metaphysical type of live conncert experience called Lifehouse. It was so ambitious, fantastic and overly complicated that most people had no idea what Pete was trying to achieve and trying to communicate it to other people gave Pete a nervous breakdown. Eventually, the opera project was canceled. The narrative of the opera was disassembled and many of the pieces ended up on the Who's Next album in the form of a conventional collection of songs. It was a very weird and interesting concept. Like most people, I never knew any of this until I saw the great 2014 documentary about The Who's management team called Lambert & Stamp. I spent most of my life thinking that Who's Next was just a great collection of unconnected songs which was what it eventually became.
IMO 1971 was one of the greatest years in music. (BTW check out he book "1971 Never a Dull Moment" by David Hepworth). In my top 5 would be Led Zeppelin IV , Sticky Fingers, Hunky Dory and Who's Next. All very predictable. But my favourite, and probably my all time favourite album, is Stormcock by Roy Harper.
A great, pivotal year, to be sure, still brimming with treasures to be discovered, rediscovered, and reassessed. Here are my picks for 1971, listed as much as possible in alphabetic order by title: --'Every Picture Tells a Story' by Rod Stewart (Stewart's greatest LP, full of heartfelt emotion and poignant storytelling) --'Future Games' by Fleetwood Mac (evocative early outing by this band, relatively overlooked and underrated in their catalog) --'Madman Across the Water' by Elton John (absolute classic by this phenomenal musician, featuring the artist's single most beautiful song, "Tiny Dancer") --'Straight Up' by Badfinger (strong, securely canonical album by this fine band, featuring their signature songs "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day") --untitled fourth album by Led Zeppelin, commonly referred to as 'Led Zeppelin IV' (the greatest LP by this great group, and probably the single finest album of this year--an unimpeachable classic)
wholeheartedly agree that this is the finest year in music this side of 1876. It is hard to be original like Jason in this year with so many great established releases out, but I will list the albums from that year that are in my personal top 100 but haven't been mentioned in the show: 2. Chicago III (just behind Led Zep IV) 3. Blue - Joni Mitchell (her best) 4. Songs of love and hate - Leonard Cohen (his best) 5. What's going on - Marvin Gaye (his best) 7. Tapestry - Carole King 9. Fragile - Yes There are a whopping 36 albums from this year in my personal top 500, more than from the entire 21st century so far.
I have to go with Badfinger's Straight Up as my favorite in a year filled with classics. Call it a soft spot for me, but this album will always be special. Great job as always, guys!
I miss this series - almost like it should be revisited but I guess that would be insane. I am a Todd Rundgren fan and loved Something/Anything and to a lesser extent A Wizard A True Star but Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren is impressive with Hope I'm Around being a standout track for me. I also listened to Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison that I had never heard before which is absolutely superb. Both albums might make my top 10 for this year but not the top 5. Listening to the majestic title track of Tupelo Honey and the way it leisurely builds and builds into a great piece of music reminds me of the great level of musicianship of this era - along with something magical (it's here in this song and much of this year's best) that not only doesn't exist any more to this level of creativity but makes you feel that this specific year was special.
@@TastesLikeMusic That's good to hear. I know you all have an appreciation for what was a spectacular era from 67-76 but, of course, you have to make the channel relevant by covering music from this century. But I noticed you have been doing a lot of that lately.
The only year for which I will list runners-up, because it's so deep - The Allman Brothers Band Live at Fillmore East, The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers, and Genesis Nursery Cryme. 5. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter 4. Joni Mitchell - Blue 3. Led Zeppelin - Zoso 2. The Who - Who's Next 1. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
A Fantastic Year for music! Here's my top 10 for 1971.... 1 Who's Next - The Who 2 Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin 3 Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones 4 Madman Across the Water - Elton John 5 Every Picture Tells A Story - Rod Stewart 6 At Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers Band 7 Blue - Joni Mitchell 8 L.A. Woman - The Doors 9 Aqualung - Jethro Tull 10 Teaser and the Firecat - Cat Stevens
I was 13 in 1971 one new thought was it took a few years to digest 1971 as records were typically played from start to finish and every record was played start to finish.
Well, here is my top 100 of 1971...I am sure I forgot some still... My top 3 where always like that, #4 and 5 swapped with 6 and 7 over the years. 1. Who's Next 2. Led Zeppelin - IV 3. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate 4. Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson (used to be Jethro Tull - Aqualung) 5. Pink Floyd - Meddle (used to be Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story)
my head exploded while trying to choose, and all the ones chosen in the video are undeniable classics. but here's 5 that were never mentioned: 1. Tago Mago - Can; this is both the funkiest AND experimental German rock album ever made! 2. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic; considering this was a year when the Isley Brothers and Sly & the Family Stone put out great records, this classic shines even brighter 3. Love it to Death - Alice Cooper; this might be my first of 2 Alice Cooper records to make the top 5 in the 70s. this album has no weak tracks. and "the Ballad of Dwight Fry" is easily the best track the band ever wrote 4. Every Picture Tells a Story - Rod Stewart; he'll never come up on my list again, but there's something special about this one. aside from the fact that it has the overplayed classic "Maggie May" the title track is just peak Rod! 5. Nursery Cryme - Genesis; yes-I'm aware it's not their best album, but I come back to it a lot. "play me my song/here it comes again"
Sabbath - Master of Reality Bowie - Hunky Dory Can - Tago Mago Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste Tull - Aqualung Zeppelin 4 T. Rex - Electric Warrior Van der Graaf - Pawn Hearts Yes - The Yes Album Yes - Fragile

Any year in rock before 1971 i like more. I don't like most of these records even when i liked the bands. 1. Move - Message from the Country - a gem 2. David Bowie - Hunky Dory - great 3. CSN&Y - 4 Way STreet - good 5.Jethro Tull - Aqualung - good 6. Elton John - Madman (Only like his first few records - Tumbleweed Connection is his best) good 7 Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story good 8. Who - Who's next. Good record. The only record I liked more by them is the Who Sellout but i don't like the Who but for a few songs. 9. Tapestry. Not so good. Don't really like many songs but put her down ast a tribute to a great writing talent 10. Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey. Van was still turning out good records. 11. Nick Drake 12. Marvin Gaye - Well for the line " We’re all sensitive people with so much to give Understand me, sugar" which gets me laughs and a couple of women. 12. Led Zepplin - what 25 CDs - 25 stolen lyrics and melodies - and I like about 7 of their songs. Please tell me you didn't say a Graham Nash song is better than any Neil Young record. Yeah I checked it out and you should have your head examined forgot Todd Rundgren - The Ballad of Todd Rundgren - couple of fine songs like "Be Nice to me" These Sucks or are so overrated: Stones - Sticky Fingers Door - LA Woman - only good record was their debut and Strange Days was OK. Cats Stevens - The Wind is good. I hate Moon Shadow and Peace train and it's not the message it's the stupid melodies my 2 year old could love. Paul McCarthy has not done one good CD. Joni - Prefer the folkie, only one good song (River) on Blue - a jazzy pop CD that annoys. Hate Nilson .. Lime in the Coconut is a horrible song.
Agree. The BEST year of all time. Not a question for me. My list: 1. The Rolling Stones- Sticky Fingers (My #4 Album of the 70's) 2. The Who-Who’s Next (#5) 3. Marvin Gaye-What’s Goin On (#16) 4. An incredible year.
Truly stacked year, my top 5, pick any order you like. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Joni Mitchell- Blue Led Zeppelin IV Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de melody Nelson Allman bros - Live at Fillmore east
Another tough year but to my surprise not quite as tough to narrow down as 1970 was. I think it's partly the Mount Rushmore effect that the guys eluded to, although I do stray from that to a certain degree. I simply could not distinguish between about 5 albums for a 5th honorable mention, so I only went with 4 HM. 5) Sticky Fingers- The Rolling Stones 4) Who's Next- The Who 3) LA Woman- The Doors 2) Led Zeppelin IV- Led Zeppelin 1) John Prine- John Prine Honorable Mention: What's Going On- Marvin Gaye; Steve Goodman- Steve Goodman; The Silver Tongued Devil and I- Kris Kristofferson; Tupelo Honey- Van Morrison

@@ThePhysicalillusion You seem to really know your stuff! My personal favorite is Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator, which I realize is a weird pick. Where would you rank it?
5- Elton John ---- Madman Across the Water 4- The Rolling Stones --- Sticky Fingers 3- David Bowie --- Hunky Dory 2- Led Zeppelin --- Led Zeppelin IV 1- The Who --- Who's Next?
Phew. So many incredible albums in that year and then no.1 is Cat Stevens. Kramzer is such a twisted fellow 😄 Jason topped the surprise factor with "Runt", an album i think is fantastic but never would have expected here. Love your videos, guys.
Gerry Rafferty's solo debut album "Can I Have My Money Back?" was a wonderful folk influenced melodic pop collection. Poignant tracks like Mary Skeffington (about his mother), Sign On The Dotted Line and more upbeat tracks like New Street Blues.
1. Sticky Fingers - Rolling Stones 2. Who's Next 3. IV- Led Zeppelin 4. Hunky Dory - Bowie 5. The Yes Album 6. Fragile - Yes 7. Killer - Alice Cooper 8. Meddle - Pink Floyd 9. My top 3 are each arguably the best albums ever by those legendary artists. It's crazy that Yes (Fragile) or Alice Cooper don't even make the top 5 with albums that would win in most other years. I don't know what Jason was smoking, but otherwise well done.
Master of Reality by Black Sabbath, Fireball by Deep Purple, High Time by MC5, Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, Meddle by Pink Floyd, Imagine by John Lennon, Pieces of a Man by Gil Scott-Heron and Pearl by Janis Joplin. 8 more great albums to go along with Hunky Dory, Who's Next and Led Zeppelin IV.

For these years in particular, you guys should have expanded list to 10. Believe me there is enough quality to hold our attention. I would expand the golden years to 67-76 at least.

The Who's "Who's Next". I remember Daltrey saying in an old interview that he thought it was the best album they ever recorded. Anything that has Won't Get Fooled Again on it has to be good.
What do you three think of Free? They don't ever seem to get a mention with any of you and they're my favourite band. By the way, great call for " Teaser and the Firecat", always loved that album. LA Woman for God's sake. The Badfinger and Move albums don't get enough attention. I think all the albums you guys mentioned are excellent. Maybe this was the peak year. I was an infant so I missed it. If I made the list again I would likely move things around. Probably ranked the Zep too low, but overexposure has diminished my interest in that one.
Taking into account overexposure is a constant struggle for me. You can literally hear every single song on LZIV on the radio and I’ve heard every one a million times. - Joe

1971: (Year Average 9.3) 1. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (9.5) 2. Ram - Paul & Linda McCartney (9.5) 3. Hunky Dory - David Bowie (9.5) 4. Imagine - John Lennon (9) 5. L.A. Woman - The Doors (9)
Try as I might, I cannot deny the power of Zep. Others cut from the top - Aqualung, Master of Reality, Imagine, Meddle, L.A. Woman, Faust and Who's Next 5) Tago Mago - Can 4) Blue - Joni Mitchell 3) Hunky Dory - David Bowie 2) Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones 1) IV - Led Zeppelin
'Songs For Beginners' is a fine album, but it blows my mind that anybody would think it's better than anything else from the rest of the CSNY camp, particularly Neil; he has at least 15 albums that are better than it. Stills' first couple of records are also better than it, as is Crosby's amazing 'If I Could Only Remember My Name', which is one of the real hidden gems from 1971. Having said that, I love the videos, lads! 👌
If Ram isn’t in my top 5 for the year it’s really super close. I think it might be my favorite solo Beatles album narrowly beating out All Things Must Pass.
5. Sticky Fingers (The Rolling Stones) I love the Stones but to me they are more a song band than an album band if that makes any sense. Several strong albums and most others are enjoyable for what they are but I guess making a Top 1000 songs of all time Stones would should up here and there. Making Top 100 albums of all time. Not too much... This one is one of their best if not the best record by Stones and might make the cut. Great variation and shows a wider spectra of their abilities than most records where most songs are kind of similar. 4. Look At Yourself (Uriah Heep) Uriah Heep was one of the big names in the early 1970's but compared to Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin they seem a bit forgotten in the general conversation today (and have been for a long time) even though they are still going and making good albums. The same year they did Salisbury which is a rather progressive (and good) record. Here it was more hardrock and similar to the big names already mentioned. Perhaps my favorite album with them. If someone for some reason (like me, who discovered this band rather late) never heard this record but love 1970's hardrock? Do it.. NOW! :) 3. Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin) Perhaps their most famous album and one of the most famous albums of all time and for good reason. I personally ain't a huge fan of "Four Sticks" (it's okay but not much more) but the rest could all fit on a Led Zeppelin Top 10 list (with good competition offcourse). 2. Aqualung (Jethro Tull) I really like progressive rock but it's not the easiest genre to get into. Long songs, weird vocals, may changes in time, abstract lyrics.. But this one was for me a easy one to get into coming from a pop/rock/hardrock perspective. Like Led Zeppelin IV it is a good middle way of what they band had done and was going to do. They have more progressive albums and harder albums and gentler albums but this might be their most famous and it's easy to hear why. 1. Fireball (Deep Purple) In Rock was a heavy and influential beast in the hardrock community. Machine Head has the big hits and is song for song very welldone. However. I do like Fireball best. It is a bit rough around the edges and isn't regarded as that much of a classic (more another album in the line) but I love it. Like "Look At Yourself" it has a raw power and they really seem to like to experiment around. People might right off songs "Anyone's Daughter" but I think it's very fun and cocky. Nothing on the album seem overdone (too many takes) and while I usually like perfection as say on A Night On The Opera or Dark Side of the Moon.. The contrast is strong in this one! I might agree that this was the strongest year in music. "Older" bands finding themselves, new bands coming up, bands making several good albums and the sort of formula wasn't a too settled yet and then I haven't even mentioned Motown or other genres. I wanted some Marvin Gaye, Neil Young or something beside the "classic rock".. But too many good albums. Hats off to Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Budgie, The Who, The Doors, Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, David Bowie.. Yeah. You get the picture!

Great album, Rod at his finest.
I was 15 in 1971. Just an unbelievably rich year for music. It was also the last year for the 'true' muscle cars. In a way it feels like from this point on everything culturally started to be gradually watered down.
5-Carole King-Tapestry

I love Cat Stevens and specially that album too and Kramzer's phrase:
"grabbing you by the hand and just taking you on a slow walk"
to describe the feeling of listening to Teaser and the Firecat is excellent, I never had thought on expressing it like that ... and it's beautiful.
No, it’s not lol
@@curly_wynyes it is
I loved the summer of "71" as my best friend and I were coming of age.
In my top 5 would be
Led Zeppelin IV
, Sticky Fingers,
Hunky Dory
and Who's Next. All very predictable.
But my favourite, and probably my all time favourite album, is Stormcock by Roy Harper.
A great, pivotal year, to be sure, still brimming with treasures to be discovered, rediscovered, and reassessed. Here are my picks for 1971, listed as much as possible in alphabetic order by title:
--'Every Picture Tells a Story' by Rod Stewart (Stewart's greatest LP, full of heartfelt emotion and poignant storytelling)
--'Future Games' by Fleetwood Mac (evocative early outing by this band, relatively overlooked and underrated in their catalog)
--'Madman Across the Water' by Elton John (absolute classic by this phenomenal musician, featuring the artist's single most beautiful song, "Tiny Dancer")
--'Straight Up' by Badfinger (strong, securely canonical album by this fine band, featuring their signature songs "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day")
--untitled fourth album by Led Zeppelin, commonly referred to as 'Led Zeppelin IV' (the greatest LP by this great group, and probably the single finest album of this year--an unimpeachable classic)
wholeheartedly agree that this is the finest year in music this side of 1876. It is hard to be original like Jason in this year with so many great established releases out, but I will list the albums from that year that are in my personal top 100 but haven't been mentioned in the show:
2. Chicago III (just behind Led Zep IV)
3. Blue - Joni Mitchell (her best)
4. Songs of love and hate - Leonard Cohen (his best)
5. What's going on - Marvin Gaye (his best)
7. Tapestry - Carole King
9. Fragile - Yes
There are a whopping 36 albums from this year in my personal top 500, more than from the entire 21st century so far.
I have to go with Badfinger's Straight Up as my favorite in a year filled with classics. Call it a soft spot for me, but this album will always be special. Great job as always, guys!
Fantastic album!
Yes one my top 10 all time favourites
We’ll be revisiting years slowly and going a bit deeper this time.
5. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
4. Joni Mitchell - Blue
3. Led Zeppelin - Zoso
2. The Who - Who's Next

3. Blue - Joni Mitchell
4. White Light - Gene Clark
5. Led Zeppelin 4
6. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

7 Blue - Joni Mitchell
8 L.A. Woman - The Doors
9 Aqualung - Jethro Tull
10 Teaser and the Firecat - Cat Stevens
I was 13 in 1971 one new thought was it took a few years to digest 1971 as records were typically played from start to finish and every record was played start to finish.
If I’m being completely honest with myself .. gotta go with Carole King’s Tapestry album. As much as I love, Who’s Next.
Another fantastic and interesting selection. For me, you can't not give a nod to the birth of Glam Rock with T.Rex's Electric Warrior. Cheers guys.
Well, here is my top 100 of 1971...I am sure I forgot some still...
My top 3 where always like that, #4 and 5 swapped with 6 and 7 over the years.
1. Who's Next
2. Led Zeppelin - IV
3. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
4. Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson (used to be Jethro Tull - Aqualung)
5. Pink Floyd - Meddle (used to be Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story)
Very interesting picks by Jason, kudos for that.
my head exploded while trying to choose, and all the ones chosen in the video are undeniable classics. but here's 5 that were never mentioned:
1. Tago Mago - Can; this is both the funkiest AND experimental German rock album ever made!
2. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic; considering this was a year when the Isley Brothers and Sly & the Family Stone put out great records, this classic shines even brighter
3. Love it to Death - Alice Cooper; this might be my first of 2 Alice Cooper records to make the top 5 in the 70s. this album has no weak tracks. and "the Ballad of Dwight Fry" is easily the best track the band ever wrote
Sabbath - Master of Reality
Bowie - Hunky Dory
Can - Tago Mago
Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste
Tull - Aqualung
Zeppelin 4

-John Lennon - Imagine
-Joni Mitchell - Blue
-Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
-Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
AOTY: The Who - Who's Next?
Any year in rock before 1971 i like more. I don't like most of these records even when i liked the bands.
1. Move - Message from the Country - a gem
2. David Bowie - Hunky Dory - great
3. CSN&Y - 4 Way STreet - good
5.Jethro Tull - Aqualung - good
6. Elton John - Madman (Only like his first few records - Tumbleweed Connection is his best) good
7 Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story good
8. Who - Who's next. Good record. The only record I liked more by them is the Who Sellout but i don't like the Who but for a few songs.
9. Tapestry. Not so good. Don't really like many songs but put her down ast a tribute to a great writing talent
10. Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey. Van was still turning out good records.
11. Nick Drake
12. Marvin Gaye - Well for the line " We’re all sensitive people with so much to give
Understand me, sugar" which gets me laughs and a couple of women.
12. Led Zepplin - what 25 CDs - 25 stolen lyrics and melodies - and I like about 7 of their songs.
Please tell me you didn't say a Graham Nash song is better than any Neil Young record. Yeah I checked it out and you should have your head examined
forgot Todd Rundgren - The Ballad of Todd Rundgren - couple of fine songs like "Be Nice to me"
These Sucks or are so overrated:
Stones - Sticky Fingers
Door - LA Woman - only good record was their debut and Strange Days was OK.

Truly stacked year, my top 5, pick any order you like.
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Joni Mitchell- Blue
Led Zeppelin IV
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de melody Nelson
Allman bros - Live at Fillmore east
Another tough year but to my surprise not quite as tough to narrow down as 1970 was. I think it's partly the Mount Rushmore effect that the guys eluded to, although I do stray from that to a certain degree. I simply could not distinguish between about 5 albums for a 5th honorable mention, so I only went with 4 HM.
5) Sticky Fingers- The Rolling Stones
4) Who's Next- The Who
3) LA Woman- The Doors
2) Led Zeppelin IV- Led Zeppelin
1) John Prine- John Prine
Honorable Mention: What's Going On- Marvin Gaye; Steve Goodman- Steve Goodman; The Silver Tongued Devil and I- Kris Kristofferson; Tupelo Honey- Van Morrison

2. Allman Bros at Fillmore
3. Meddle

All of these are at least high 8’s from me, and the top 12 or 13 9 or above (10 for Fragile and Who’s Next).
Looks like you could use a little more Todd in your life. Just kidding (sort of). Great list nonetheless. -Jason
Listography The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren is probably within the 30-35 range for me.
The rest of my 8’s from this ridiculous year:
Alice Cooper - Love It To Death
Alice Cooper - Killer
Badfinger - Straight Up
The Beach Boys - Surf's Up
Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink

@@ThePhysicalillusion Great to see another Can fan around here.
@@ThePhysicalillusion You seem to really know your stuff! My personal favorite is Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator, which I realize is a weird pick. Where would you rank it?
5- Elton John ---- Madman Across the Water
4- The Rolling Stones --- Sticky Fingers
3- David Bowie --- Hunky Dory
2- Led Zeppelin --- Led Zeppelin IV
1- The Who --- Who's Next?
Phew. So many incredible albums in that year and then no.1 is Cat Stevens. Kramzer is such a twisted fellow 😄
Jason topped the surprise factor with "Runt", an album i think is fantastic but never would have expected here.
1. Sticky Fingers - Rolling Stones
2. Who's Next
3. IV- Led Zeppelin
4. Hunky Dory - Bowie
5. The Yes Album
6. Fragile - Yes
7. Killer - Alice Cooper
8. Meddle - Pink Floyd
9. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
10. L.A. Woman - Doors
11. Tarkus - ELP
12. What's Going On? - Marvin Gaye
13. Master of Reality - Black Sabbath
14. Nilson Schmilsson - Harry Nilson
Really great year. My top 3 are each arguably the best albums ever by those legendary artists. It's crazy that Yes (Fragile) or Alice Cooper don't even make the top 5 with albums that would win in most other years. I don't know what Jason was smoking, but otherwise well done.
Yeah, just a ton of good stuff. - Joe
Good to see Tarkus, my #4...
Just listened to the Graham Nash album on your recommendation Jason. Wow, what an album!
It’s a real hidden gem. Glad you liked it!
Gil Scott-Heron "pieces of a man",,,absolutely...
Kramz... one of my fav movies of all time, Harold and Maude takes it soundtrack exclusively from Cat Stevens, some from Teaser. Just hypnotic and beautiful
1. Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
2. Uriah Heep - Look At Yourself

Even after cheating and listing twice as many as you guys I'm still struggling with the ones I left off.
I love that Badfinger album, it just couldn't quite make it for me. -Jason
Taking into account overexposure is a constant struggle for me. You can literally hear every single song on LZIV on the radio and I’ve heard every one a million times. - Joe

@@TastesLikeMusic Ha!
@@TastesLikeMusic Joe! Which is worse, the Ummagumma studio album or the Doors albums without Morrison?
@@TastesLikeMusic I was compiling my albums of the year and came across this old question. lol
5. Sticky Fingers (The Rolling Stones)
I love the Stones but to me they are more a song band than an album band if that makes any sense.
4. Look At Yourself (Uriah Heep)
Uriah Heep was one of the big names in the early 1970's but compared to Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin they seem a bit forgotten in the general conversation today (and have been for a long time) even though they are still going and making good albums. The same year they did Salisbury which is a rather progressive (and good) record. Here it was more hardrock and similar to the big names already mentioned. Perhaps my favorite album with them. If someone for some reason (like me, who discovered this band rather late) never heard this record but love 1970's hardrock? Do it.. NOW! :)
3. Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin)
Perhaps their most famous album and one of the most famous albums of all time and for good reason. I personally ain't a huge fan of "Four Sticks" (it's okay but not much more) but the rest could all fit on a Led Zeppelin Top 10 list (with good competition offcourse).
2. Aqualung (Jethro Tull)
I really like progressive rock but it's not the easiest genre to get into.
1. Fireball (Deep Purple)
In Rock was a heavy and influential beast in the hardrock community.
