Slanted creates a wider vibrato. Look at Moreau, Rostropovich, Jian Wang, Weilerstein, etc. Square creates narrower vibrato. Koranyi and Maisky are good examples of this. You can do both regarding extensions. I think what really matters in getting a clear vibrato is to pull on the note using your back muscles, that way you can get a much better rotation quickly.
